Cain Velasquez’s coach Javier Mendez is certain that UFC fans haven’t seen the last of the Mexican-American star.

Velasquez’s career was brought into question following his recent outing. He was finished by Francis Ngannou in the first round of their main event meeting at UFC on ESPN 1. There was some controversy as to whether or not the finish was the result of a knee injury or an uppercut.

Speaking with Submission Radio, Mendez confirmed that, barring the severity of Velasquez’s knee injury, he will “100 percent” return to the Octagon:

“If the knee is not severe, and it’s only a few months, he’s back 100%” Mendez said. “He’s still goddamn hungry. He’s not gonna let it go like that. I wouldn’t let him go like that if it’s not severe.

“But if it’s severe, then the decision: him, and his family, and his wife, they’ll have to go through it first, and then they can let me in on it. It’s their decision. But if it’s not severe, then I’m going to have an input in that one.

“Because I’m gonna say, ‘No, no, f**ker. You ain’t stopping because of this.’ But if it’s potentially worse, then I’m staying out of that. That’s a family decision, and that’s between him and his family, not me.”

Velasquez’s loss to Ngannou was his first fight back in over two years. It was also only the third loss of his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

His last fight was a first-round TKO win over Travis Browne at UFC 200. Velasquez is a two-time heavyweight champ who has proven to be one of the best heavyweights the sport has ever seen. If he does decide to retire soon, he’ll still go down as one of the greats.

Vicente Luque talks throwing ‘strategy out the window’ in his epic war with Bryan Barberena last Sunday (Feb. 17, 2019) at UFC on ESPN 1.

It was one of the more memorable fights in some time. Both Luque and Barberena left it all in the Octagon on Sunday night. After a “Fight Of The Night” performance like that, you would think everyone in “The Silent Assassins” camp would be stoked.

Well, almost everyone, as Luque explained, because his fiancee was none too pleased that he decided to stop Barberena’s punches with his head just a few weeks before their wedding day.

“I’ve got to ice my face up to look good,” Luque told reporters after the fight (via MMAjunkie). “She’s going to be – she is mad at me. She talked to me right there, she said, ‘What’s going on? What fight was that,”” he explained. “This is MMA. Sometimes you go in there and you get the quick finish. Sometimes it doesn’t happen.”

Both men earned an extra 50K for their efforts on Sunday night. Perhaps Luque can splurge a bit extra on his fiancee during their honeymoon to make up for his facial imperfections.

Luque went on to explain that he had a gameplan for Barberena. But as the Mike Tyson saying goes, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

“I knew he was a tough guy,” Luque said. “Obviously when we’re in there, and we hit him with the best shot we have and the guy keeps moving, we don’t expect that, but I knew he was a tough guy and he was going to bring the fight,” he added.

“Once he knocked me down the first time, I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to fight this guy.’ I threw strategy out the window and said, I’m going to fight him,’ and give a show to everybody and show that I’ve got heart and that I’ve got what it takes to be one of the best over here in this division.”

It was recently revealed that Paul Felder suffered a collapsed lung in his fight with James Vick over the weekend (Sun. February 17, 2019).

“The Irish Dragon” defeated Vick via unanimous decision in the UFC on ESPN 1 co-main event. Shortly after the show, Felder’s manager, Brian Butler, took to Instagram to provide an update. He revealed that Felder suffered a small collapsed lung, but nothing that should keep him out long-term.

We now have an update to pass along. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that the original hope was that Felder would be released from the Phoenix hospital today. However, it turns out they are keeping him in for more tests:

“Update on @felderpaul: original hope was that he’d be discharged from a Phoenix hospital today after suffering from a collapsed lung in his fight against James Vick, but according to his manager Brian Butler they are keeping him longer for more tests.”

This was Felder’s first victory since being defeated by Mike Perry at welterweight in July. Felder stepped in to fight “Platinum” on short-notice at 170 pounds. He was defeated via split decision, ending a three-fight win streak. Felder is hoping to have a big run at lightweight this year, hopefully getting his name in the mix for a title opportunity.

Felder is remaining upbeat about his current plight, however, tweeting his current status:

He’s even hoping that someone can deliver his some good food to his hospital room:

Let’s hope Felder is released with a clean bill of health soon.

Kron Gracie made a statement in his UFC debut this past weekend (Sun. February 17, 2019) in Phoenix, Arizona.

Gracie submitted Alex Caceres in the first round of their UFC on ESPN 1 match-up. Speaking to Combate after his big win, the 30-year-old discussed what was going through his head during the fight. Gracie admitted that as soon as he got Caceres to the canvas he thought “He’s not escaping” (via Bloody Elbow):

“It was the best debut possible. I always expect it to be a lot worse, but it was the best possible,” Gracie said. “I want to fight soon and keep at it, I don’t know what happened, all I know is that I took his back and said ‘He’s not escaping’.”

Gracie also said that he’d like to get back into the Octagon rather quickly. He specifically named the upcoming UFC 237 pay-per-view (PPV) from Curitiba, Brazil on May 11th. That’s only three short months away in his home country:

“It’s in May, right? I think that would be good. That’s in three months. I’m in condition to fight in May, that’s for sure. I fought in Japan, United States and now Brazil. I’ve been all over the world.”
