Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will return to the Octagon tomorrow (Sat. February 2, 2019).

He’ll co-headline UFC on ESPN+ 2 from the Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil. Aldo will be facing his fellow countryman Renato Moicano. Before that fight was made official, however, Aldo told media recently that he was offered a fight with lightweight fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

However, the UFC seems to be going in a different direction with Cerrone, likely matching him up with Conor McGregor next. Instead, Aldo proposes a fight with former 155-pound champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis (via MMA Fighting):

“This fight was very close (to happening),” Aldo said. “They offered it to us and I was really happy because we’re both aggressive fighters and it would be a big fight, but the discussion has taken another path now, he’s trying to fight Conor (McGregor) and I don’t see how this fight happens now.

“But (Anthony) Pettis would be an excellent opponent. We were close to fighting twice before and didn’t happen. Having this fight in May, at lightweight, would be even better.”

Pettis is gearing up to make his welterweight debut against former 170-pound title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. They’ll face off at UFC Nashville on March 23rd. Should both Pettis and Aldo emerge victorious in their next bouts, it would make for a huge dream fight between the pair.

As far as who else Aldo has on his list of potential opponents moving forward, the Brazilian said he’s down to scrap with anyone in the top-15 at 145 pounds. He also mentioned he’d fight a few lightweights, such as Dustin Poirier:

“Every ranked featherweight, down to the No. 15,” Aldo said. “I put some lightweights there as well, like Dustin Poirier and other ranked fighters. All 15 names. Take a look at the rankings and that’s pretty much my list.”

For most of his UFC career, Jose Aldo reigned as a UFC titleholder.

However, at this point in his career, with just a few fights left, Aldo is without a belt. While he plans on hanging up his gloves for good soon, the prospect of retiring without a title around his waist saddens the Brazilian legend (via MMA Junkie):

“I get very sad about that, you know,” Aldo said. “I dreamed of retiring as a champion, if you see my previous interviews, I always talked about that, that I wanted to go out as a champion and enjoy life a bit. But it’s not what’s been happening.

“I think it’s very hard for them to match me up against Max for a third time, so this frustrates my plans a little, my desire of being champion and leaving as champion. But that’s part of it.

“Now we don’t have this possibility, we’ll see what happens in the future. But it’s one step at a time. The first step is to beat Renato and we’ll see what happens as the year goes by.”

Aldo was introduced to the UFC as the first-ever 145-pound champion. He went undefeated for four years before being stopped for the first time by Conor McGregor in 2015. After reclaiming the featherweight throne, he was once again knocked off in back-to-back fights with curret division king, Max Holloway.

Now, Aldo has just a few fights left on his UFC deal. The first of his last three will take place this weekend (Sat. February 2, 2018) in his native Brazil. He’ll be taking on Renato Moicano in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN+ 2.

Former featherweight king Jose Aldo will face off with Renato Moicano in the co-main event of this weekend’s UFC Fortaleza.

That, however, wasn’t always the plan according to UFC President Dana White, who stated said that Aldo wanted a three-round fight instead of a five-round main event fight. And that is why the promotion booked UFC Fortaleza as such.

Aldo Clarifies His Decision

Speaking with the media in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (via MMA Fighting), Aldo clarified that his coach Andre Pederneiras was in charge of that part of his career and that he has never questioned him yet, so why start now.

”I never turned anything down,” Aldo said. “The thing about three or five rounds, it was ‘Dede’ who thought it wouldn’t be good. You can ask him. He made the fight three rounds, he thought it would be better. To me, it doesn’t matter. Five, 10 rounds, however many they want, I’ll do it against Moicano or anyone else. I have no problem with that, I train for that, that’s what I do every day. I want to get there and always do my best, I never said otherwise.”

Aldo On Trusting His Coach

The consensus featherweight GOAT went on to say that it really didn’t matter to him whether or not the fight was three rounds or five rounds. He was more than happy to headline UFC Fortaleza. But instead opted to trust his longtime coach, Pederneiras.

”It’s tough to see me in the in the co-main event,” Aldo said. “Of course, respecting both of them, Raphael (and Moraes) will be the main event, (but) it’s tough to see the name I have and not being the main event. I had that in my mind, but if I got to where I am today was thanks to ‘Dede’, and he knows really well what he’s doing.”

Pederneiras’ Reasoning

While it may seem like a five round fight could be an advantage for Aldo, it’s important to remember that many fights that are scheduled for 25 minutes, do not go the extra two rounds, the “championship rounds”.

Logic along these lines as well as the slim chance of guaranteeing a title shot with a victory in Fortaleza — was the main factor that in Pederneiras’ decision.

“Aldo became WEC champion in 2009. So we’ve been training his body for five rounds for nine years,” Pederneiras explained. “There’s a huge toll in what you do. So, when someone thinks, ‘Oh, it’s just two more rounds’ — no, it’s a completely different preparation.

“Since there’s no possibility that Aldo fights for the belt, I explained him everything and he agreed. If (Brian) Ortega had won (against Max Holloway), this fight could be five rounds to elevate him (for a title shot). But even if Aldo accepted a five-round fight now and knocks [Moicano] out in 30 seconds, his next one won’t be for the title, everybody knows that.

“If Dana says before the next fight, ‘This fight will determine who fights for the title,’ he will fight five, 10, 12 rounds, whatever is necessary, but that’s not the case for this fight now.”

UFC Fortaleza, otherwise known as UFC on ESPN+ 2, will take place Saturday, February 2, 2019, from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica, do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil.
