Al Iaquinta faced Donald Cerrone tonight in the main event of UFC Ottawa. The anticipated match up did not disappoint.

Iaquinta (14-4-1) has just one defeat since September of 2014. That being his short-notice championship fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. Should he win, the No. 4 ranked Iaquinta has a legit claim to the next title shot.

As for Cerrone (35-11). The 36-year-old “Cowboy” has never looked better. He has won two straight and three of his last four. A win over Iaquinta could lasso a title shot for Cerrone.

Round One

They touch gloves. Iaquinta comes out with a sidekick. He throws a leg kick and goes to the body. Cerrone answers with a leg kick of his own. Iaquinta wings a right hand that misses. Cerrone buries a body kick. He shoves Iaquinta away. Both men having a hard time finding their range early on. Cerrone faints a knee straight down the middle. Iaquinta clips Cerrone with a right hand. Cerrone throws a head kick up as Iaquinta throws a right hand. Less than a minute to go. Cerrone plots forward and lands a kick but Iaquinta eats it and works for a takedown. The horn sounds.

Round Two

Cerrone lands a leg kick. Iaquinta answers. Iaquinta moves in and lands a one-two. Cerrone goes low and hurts Iaquinta with a leg kick. He drives another kick home. Iaquinta lands a heavy right hand, then a kick. Cerrone pops a jab, Iaquinta with another leg kick. He faints to draw a reaction from Cerrone. Less than two minutes to go. Cerrone drives forward with a one-two. Iaquinta eats a hard thigh kick. The New Yorker doubles up on his jab. He wings a left to the body that misses. He clips Cerrone with a right that wobbles him. The round comes to an end.

Round Three

Iaquinta goes right back to the legs of Cerrone with a kick. Cerrone just misses a head kick. He pumps his jab in the face of Iaquinta. Both men throw leg kicks at the same time. Iaquinta with a fast one-two down the middle. Cerrone answers with a leg kick, then a straight left. Cerrone lands a hard body kick, then goes to back to the legs of Iaquinta. Cerrone throws a front kick out there that just misses. Cerrone lands a left hand. Iaquinta lands a right. A head kick by Cerrone finds its mark. Nice one-two landed by Iaquinta. Cerrone goes high with a kick again. A straight left drops Iaquinta. Cerrone opens up with ground and pound but the horn sounds and saves Iaquinta.

Round Four

Cerrone straight away to the leg kick. Iaquinta eats a front kick. He drops. Cerrone is all over him. He takes his back. Iaquinta defends and gets to his feet. Unreal. Cerrone lands a left hand. Cowboy pumps the jab in the face of Iaquinta. Cerrone with a switch kick to Iaquinta’s head. Iaquinta lands a left hook, then another. Cerrone throws the front kick again. He sneaks an uppercut in behind it. He lands a right, then a left on Iaquinta. The men trade body blows. Cerrone buries a hard leg kick. Cerrone moves forward with a brilliant combo of punches. The round ends with Iaquinta’s face a bloody mess.

Round Five

The fighters touch gloves. Iaquinta moves forward and doubles up his jab. Cerrone lands a leg kick, then another. Iaquinta loops an overhand right hand that misses. Cerrone lands a stiff jab then a leg kick that nearly takes his off his feet. Cerrone walks Iaquinta down and throws a head kick. Iaquinta lands a looping right. Cerrone lands a front kick, Iaquinta counters with a right hook. Cerrone lands a body kick. Iaquinta lands a nice jab. 90 seconds left in the fight. Iaquinta faints a takedown, Cerrone pushes him off and lands a leg kick. Both men open up as the final second’s tick away. Great fight.

UFC Ottawa featured a middleweight match up between Derek Brunson and Elias Theodorou as the evening’s co-main event.

Brunson (18-7) has dropped his last two fights in a row. The 35-year-old needs a win as he has lost four of his last six overall.

As for Theodorou (16-2). “The Spartan” has slowly ascended the middleweight division. He was won three straight with his most recent victory coming over Eryk Anders at UFC 231.

Round One

Brunson takes the center of the Octagon and eats a pair of leg kicks. Theodorou clinches briefly and lands an uppercut. Brunson gets the takedown and quickly takes Theodorou’s back. He goes under the chin with the choke, Theodorou defends and falls backward. Brunson keeps the choke in but Theodorou breaks free and gets back to his feet. Theodorou lands a couple of hard leg kicks. He spins through and throws a back fist. Brunson lands a right but eats a couple more kicks. Theodorou has great movement as usual on the outside. He throws a spinning back fist on the entry but misses Brunson entirely. 20 seconds left in the round. The horn sounds as both fighters dance on the outside.

Round Two

Theodorou throws a spinning head kick and a back fist. Brunson grabs a leg and looks for a takedown. Theodorou defends and cracks Brunson with a right hand. The Canadian is picking apart the American from the outside thus far in this fight. Brunson just can’t figure out Theodorou yet. Brunson can’t get on the inside as Theodorou throws the side kick effectively. Another spinning technique by the Canadian landed. Brunson is not his typical aggressive self here. Theodorou lands a right hand followed by a body kick. Brunson throws a head kick that barely misses its target. Theodorou drives home a body kick as the horn sounds to end round two.

Round Three

Brunson presses forward and throws a right hand. Theodorou lands a kick and retreats. Brunson clinches his hands around Theodorou’s waist and works for a takedown. He slams Theodorou but the Canadian bounces right back up to his feet. Brunson picks up Theodorou with a massive slam and drives him down hard. He takes Theodorou’s back but the Canadian is so hard to control. He gets free and wings a left hand towards Brunson. Brunson lands a left hand, then a knee. 90 seconds left in the fight. Brunson lands a one-two. Theodorou lands a spinning back fist again. Brunson lands again with his left hand. The fighters trade hands as the horn sounds.

UFC Ottawa played host to a pivotal featherweight contest between Cub Swanson and Shane Burgos.

Swanson (25-10) has seen better days. The longtime veteran has dropped his last three fights heading into Saturday night. A win is of the utmost importance for the So-Cal native.

As for Burgos (11-1). After losing the only fight of his career, “The Hurricane” got back on track by defeating Kurt Holobaugh at UFC 230. A win over Swanson would likely propel Burgos into the top 15.

Round One

Burgos opens up with a jab, Swanson with a side kick. Swanson lands a right hook, left cross combo. Burgos plots forward and pops his jab again. Swanson drives home a leg kick. Burgos answers with one of his own. Swanson launches an attack with his hands, Burgos shells up and defends. Burgos rips a left hook to the body. Very technical thus far for Burgos. Swanson throws a head kick up and clips Burgos. Burgos goes body, head on the left side. Both fighters trade low kicks, Swanson doubles up his jab. One minute to go in the round. Burgos pops his jab again, his five plus inch reach advantage his coming in handy here. Swanson wings a right hook. The horn sounds.

Round Two

Both fighters open up with rapid-fire jabs. Burgos lands a leg kick. Swanson lands a right hand, then a left. He throws a sidekick to boot. Swanson fainting and moving in, he lands a nice one-two down the middle. Swanson lands an uppercut and then a body kick. Burgos eats it and walks through. He lands an uppercut. Swanson connects on a big right hook. Burgos lands a leg kick. Swanson fires back with a kick. The men trade jabs, Burgos sneaks an uppercut in behind his jab. Again, the fighters trade right hands. Swanson lands a right hand and a leg kick. Burgos steps aside and lands a right. He walks Swanson down but Swanson answers with a left hand that backs Burgos up. The horn sounds.

Round Three

Swanson opens up with a left hand, then a leg kick. Burgos has great head movement and lands a right hand. Swanson is in his face here. He fakes a takedown. Burgos backs up and lands a double jab. He cracks Swanson with a straight left hand. Swanson gets in on a takedown near the cage. He gets his hands locked around Burgos’ waist. He unloads a bevy of knees to Burgos’ thighs. He can’t get Burgos to the ground but those knees have to hurt. Burgos defends and breaks his grip. The fighters recenter and Burgos nearly lands a huge left hook. 90 seconds left in the fight. Burgos moves forward and cracks Swanson with a right, then another right. Swanson throws a left. Burgos walks Swanson down and pops a left hand. He goes to the head with a kick. Then the body. Swanson tries to get the fight to the ground Burgos lands a head kick as the fight ends.

Katona (8-0) entered Saturday night having never tasted defeat. The 27-year-old Canadian entered the contest at a slight underdog at +155 (Bovada).

As for Dvalishvili (8-4). The Serra-Longo trained fighter is yet to be in a boring fight. He defeated Terrion Ware at UFC Moscow last September.

Round One

Katona quickly takes to the center of the Octagon and lands a leg kick. Dvalishvili pumps his jab and lands a leg kick. He fakes a flying knee then throws a spinning back fist. Nothing finds its mark but Katona lands a lunging left hand. Katona gets cracked with a big right hand but he eats it and walks forward. Dvalishvili circles right and winds a left hand, he snatches up Katona’s leg for a single leg but Katona wiggles free. Katona looks for a takedown of his own as he presses Dvalishvili against the cage. Dvalishvili reveres the position and puts Katona on his back. Less than one minute to go and Dvalishvili is in top control. He lands a few soft punches and a few hammer fists as the round comes to an end.

Round Two

Katona presses forward to start round two. Dvalishvili takes advantage and scores a takedown. He puts Katona on his back. Katona looks for a choke but there is nothing there. Dvalishvili passes into half guard and lands a few right hands to Katona’s face. He finds his way back to full guard. Dvalishvili lands a nice right hand as both fighters battle for position. Two minutes left but Dvalishvili is doing just enough to keep this fight on the ground. A punch here and there. Katona is just helpless as the referee stands the fighters up. Katona wades in with a left hand and clinches Dvalishili. He lands a knee and presses him against the cage. He tries to trip Dvalishvili but instead gets tripped. The round ends.

Round Three

Katona looks eager to start the final round. He throws a head kick that catches air. Dvalishvili lands a leg kick. Katona lunges in with a lead elbow, Dvalishvili evades and clinches Katona. He tries to throw Katona but he defends and lands a knee. Katona defends a trip and stomps Dvalishvili’s foot. Katona leads with a stiff jab but Dvalishvili times a takedown. He puts Katona on his back again. He lands some ground and pound and moves into Katona’s guard. He postures up and lands some nice offence. One minute to go and both guys are firing. Katona throws his legs up and looks for a Dvalishvili’s heel. The fight ends.
