Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and former multi-time boxing world champion Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm has experienced a downward spiral over the last few months, losing two straight bouts. After surrendering her title last March, Holm was out pointed by Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 last night (July 23, 2016).

Reflecting on the loss in the aftermath of the event, Holm said that she just needs to believe in herself more:

“I have to get back in there and go forward,” the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion said during Saturday night’s post-fight press conference at United Center.  I know I’m capable of more. I just have to believe in myself more. I know I can do more than the way I performed tonight.”

Despite once holding the title, Holm admits that she never felt as if she was on top given the fact that new contenders are constantly emerging:

“I’ve never in my career whether it be in boxing or MMA, felt like I was at the top, because I know that somebody else is aspiring to be the best,” Holm said. “Just as when I first came into MMA I thought I want to have titles in both, I have drive behind me. I still do. So I never look at the division and think I made it to the top and I’m just going to stay there. I know there will always be people who are hungry, always people who are getting better.”

At the end of the day, Holm wasn’t making any excuses. “The Preacher’s Daughter” praised Shevchenko and made it clear that she wasn’t happy with her performance opposite “Bullet”:

“Valentina is really tough,” Holm said. “We knew that. Counterpunching, clinch, trips, all that. It’s not like I haven’t been taught the right things. It all comes down to my performance and it wasn’t great tonight.”

Who would you like to see Holm face off with next?

The UFC women’s bantamweight division was once again the centre of attention at UFC on FOX 20. This time it was a battle for the rights to a potential title fight with Amanda Nunes on the line, as Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko led the Chicago based card. Many had pegged ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ for victory with the recent memory of the shocking knockout over Ronda Rousey is mind, but it was yet another underdog victory on the cards in Illinois.

‘The Bullet’ was on form, bouncing back from her UFC 196 loss to Nunes with a convincing five round decision over Holm. What was even more surprising was that Shevchenko bossed the fight in the stand up against the former boxing and kickboxing world champion. Although the fight may have lacked the sheer entertainment factor, the result holds a lot of weight in terms of the title picture. Well, at least you’d think so.

Valentina Shevchenko

Although victorious over the former champ, the current queen Amanda Nunes isn’t sold on Shevchenko’s rights to a title fight. Check out ‘The Lioness’ on Twitter last night, claiming ‘The Bullet’ should fight Julianna Pena to decide the next contender at 135:

So by the sounds of it Amanda Nunes either has another opponent in mind, or is happy to wait for another fight to take place before defending her title. Is the potential of a Ronda Rousey comeback in 2016 playing on Nunes’ mind? By all accounts that’s looking a little unlikely, and the rest of the top 10 contender’s at women’s bantamweight are either tied up, coming off losses or simply undeserving of a title shot at this stage.

With Nunes holding a decision win over Shevchenko on March 5, is she right in thinking ‘The Bullet’ should fight again before a title crack? The more things change, the more they stay the same. The female 135-pound division is possible in need of some new blood, or maybe just the original life and soul of the weight class Ronda Rousey.

Stay tuned.

Another Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event is in the books. UFC on FOX 20 took place on Saturday night (July 23, 2016) from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm (10-2) looked to rebound from a late submission loss to Miesha Tate back at UFC 196 in her only title defense. In order to do that, she needed to best Valentina Shevchenko (13-2) inside the Octagon.

“The Preacher’s Daughter” couldn’t earn the win despite knocking down “Bullet” early. Shevchenko got into a rhythm in the second round and didn’t stop countering the former champion, earning her a unanimous decision victory.

The co-main event featured a lightweight clash between a returning Gilbert Melendez (22-6) and a surging Edson Barboza (18-4). In the end it was Barboza’s ability to keep the fight standing that allowed him to pepper the former Strikeforce 155-pound kingpin with leg kicks. The Brazilian scooped up scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 to take the win.

Here are some Twitter reactions to both bouts:

UFC on FOX 20 was live from Chicago, Illinois Saturday night (July 23, 2016), and produced it’s fair share of both wild and technically sound fights.

A featherweight brawl between Jason Knight and Jim Alers took place on the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card, and rightfully so took home ‘Fight of the Night’ honors. Knight entered the contest prepared to put the pressure on his Puerto Rican counterpart, talking mad trash throughout the entertaining three round contest.

Knight’s aggressive striking style and lack of fear to take the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt to the ground earned him the unanimous decision victory. Both men’s spectacular performances where awarded with $50,000 each.

On the FOX preliminary card former WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland took on up-and-coming 135-pound contender Frankie Saenz. The two bantamweight studs put on quite the show of their own, but ultimately the veteran Wineland would finish Saenz with a barrage of punches in the beginning of the third round. Both men were also given $50,000 for their ‘Fight of the Night’ efforts.

Finally coming off over a year-long layoff from the sport since losing to Paige VanZant in April of last year, Felice Herrig opened up the main card in Chicago with a rear-naked choke victory in the first round of her contest against Kailin Curran, to make quick work of the UFC veteran. Herrig was given $50,000 for her ‘Performance of the Night’ award.

As we all expected, UFC on FOX 20’s co-main event between Edson Barboza and Gilbert Melendez was an absolute spectacle.

Both men had their respective highlight reel moments in the three round contest, as Melendez’s offensive blitz had the Brazilian temporarily rocked in the second round, and Barboza managed to slowly deteriorate ‘El Nino’s’ left leg with a barrage of leg kicks throughout the 25-minute contest.

Ultimately Barboza would prove to be the most effective combatant when it was all said and done, as he now holds a two-fight win streak with the unanimous decision victory.

With Barboza’s win he will now be thrusted into the top five of the UFC’s talent stacked 155-pound division, making a case for a title shot in the near future after his impressive performance Saturday night (July 23, 2016).

Melendez will drop to a staggering 1-5 in his UFC career, leaving many mixed martial arts (MMA) fans wondering what is next for the former Strikeforce lightweight champ.
