Top UFC women’s bantamweight contender Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm has experienced a sudden fall from grace in recent months. She first lost her 135-pound title in March at the hands of Miesha Tate, and most recently she was defeated by Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of last weekend’s (July 30, 2016) UFC on FOX 20 from Chicago, Illinois.

Speaking with MMAJunkie on the loss, Holm admits that she’d just like to get back into the cage because she doesn’t want to be remembered for ‘one great fight’, and of course that fight would be her bout with previously dominant champion Ronda Rousey last November in which she scored a breathtaking knockout victory:

“Coming off a loss, all you want, I think, is just to get back in there,” Holm said. “But here we are again. I think that I just need to take whatever opportunity comes. I still feel that way. A lot of people are asking about taking a fight (instead of waiting to rematch Rousey), but I don’t want to be known for one great fight. I don’t want to be known for a few great fights. I want to be known for doing a lot. I don’t want to be content with one performance. I want to do more.”

As far as her bout with Shevchenko goes, “The Preacher’s Daughter” said that although she was angry about it, she has nowhere to move but forward:

“I can’t say that I was surprised by anything – I just didn’t perform to the best of my ability and I didn’t leave it all out there,” Holm said. “I had more to give for sure. I knew it was a close fight, but I knew I had to do more. I don’t ever want it to be a close fight. I don’t ever want it to be like that.”

“I’m just angry, that’s all,” Holm continued. “Who wants two losses in a row? But what can you do? … It’s still onward up, it’s still forward.”

Who would you like to see Holm attempt to bounce back against next?

Building off of a previous report that last Saturday’s UFC on FOX 20 did solid televised ratings, final numbers show that the card actually did much better as the highest-watched summertime UFC on FOX show and the highest overall since January 2015’s UFC on FOX 14.

According to MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer, the last three rounds of the card’s main event between women’s bantamweights Valentina Shevchenko and Holly Holm brought in 4,687,000 viewers, making it the second most-watched UFC on FOX bout outside of football season (where promotion during games traditionally leads to higher numbers), beaten only by April 2013’s Benson Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez lightweight title bout at UFC on FOX 7.

The overall numbers brought a 1.8 share and 2,975,000 viewers on average, beaten only by a movie aired on NBC brought in 2,976,000 viewers. The main success of UFC on FOX 20 came in the key 18-34 demographic, gaining an 0.8 rating and 1.1 share when no other show on network television topped 0.7 that night.

UFC on FOX 20’s massive ratings success was mainly due to the overall fame and attention that Holm brings, as she is still known as the fighter who knocked out Ronda Rousey despite losing two straight fights since. Holm brought a large amount of buzz to the Chicago card, which, after losing its ‘Rumble Johnson vs. Glover Teixeira co-main event, was lacking in overall star power.

But the fact that Holm’s bout with Shevchenko lasted five full rounds allowed ratings to climb to the lofty figures above.

The prelims also faired well with 1,261,000 viewers.

Julianna Pena Blasts ‘Harmless’ Holly Holm & ‘One-Trick Pony’ Ronda Rousey

No. 4-ranked UFC women’s bantamweight contender Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Pena has made it clear that she would like a title shot next after stringing together four straight UFC wins, most recently scoring a decision victory over former title challenger Cat Zingano at UFC 200. One contender who may challenger Pena for that next title shot, however, is No. 7-ranked Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko, who scored a dominant decision victory over former champion Holly Holm in the main event of this past weekend’s (July 23, 2016) UFC on FOX 20.

Pena wasn’t too surprised that Shevchenko beat Holm, however. “The Venezuelan Vixen”, who appeared on today’s (July 25, 2016) edition of The MMA Hour, said that ‘harmless’ Holly has been ‘overrated’:

“No, I wasn’t surprised. I’ve been saying for a while now that harmless Holly couldn’t hurt a fly, especially in a five-round fight. It’s just a little nickname. She was a little bit overrated, she got thrown into the mix and got into the top 10 after beating up some people that have not been around as long. So I think she got a little lucky with the choices of opponents that she’s had.”

Aside from Pena and Shevchenko, former longtime bantamweight queen “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey could also receive the next shot at gold if she does indeed decide to make her long awaited return after being shockingly knocked out by Holm last November. Pena also took the opportunity to take a shot at Rousey, calling the former titleholder a ‘one-trick pony’:

“I just know that the division has been changing a lot more now that Ronda is not the champion and I knew this was going to happen after that. Just because I feel Ronda is a one-trick pony who has been able to rack up all these wins and be so dominant, I knew the second she lost, it would be an open division for the rest of us. And once she was exposed, that it would be harder for her to get back in there and then second off, get back in there to win her belt. It’s good for the other girls to show the world that there are other 135-pound women out there other than Ronda Rousey.”

Who do you believe should receive the next crack at newly-minted 135-pound champ Amanda Nunes?

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and former multi-time boxing world champion Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm has experienced a downward spiral over the last few months, losing two straight bouts. After surrendering her title last March, Holm was out pointed by Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 last night (July 23, 2016).

Reflecting on the loss in the aftermath of the event, Holm said that she just needs to believe in herself more:

“I have to get back in there and go forward,” the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion said during Saturday night’s post-fight press conference at United Center.  I know I’m capable of more. I just have to believe in myself more. I know I can do more than the way I performed tonight.”

Despite once holding the title, Holm admits that she never felt as if she was on top given the fact that new contenders are constantly emerging:

“I’ve never in my career whether it be in boxing or MMA, felt like I was at the top, because I know that somebody else is aspiring to be the best,” Holm said. “Just as when I first came into MMA I thought I want to have titles in both, I have drive behind me. I still do. So I never look at the division and think I made it to the top and I’m just going to stay there. I know there will always be people who are hungry, always people who are getting better.”

At the end of the day, Holm wasn’t making any excuses. “The Preacher’s Daughter” praised Shevchenko and made it clear that she wasn’t happy with her performance opposite “Bullet”:

“Valentina is really tough,” Holm said. “We knew that. Counterpunching, clinch, trips, all that. It’s not like I haven’t been taught the right things. It all comes down to my performance and it wasn’t great tonight.”

Who would you like to see Holm face off with next?

After shocking the world last November by dethroning longtime women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm looked to make the first defense of her title last March against Miesha Tate at UFC 196. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in doing so as she ended up getting choked out in the final round of the fight.

Looking back on that fight, “The Preacher’s Daughter” admits that could have shown more in that contest:

“I wish I would have gone a little harder,” Holm said at a media lunch this week (Via MMAFighting.com). “Because I know I’m capable of more than I showed in the fight. But a lot of times you can do something and get into a bad situation even sooner. Who knows?”

Holm was likely winning the fight prior to finding herself on the wrong end of a tight rear-naked-choke, but she gives all of the credit to Tate, who Holm says has had her moments against the division’s elite:

“If you look at Miesha before we fought, she had run through all the top girls,” Holm said. “She was outwrestling wrestlers. She dropped Jessica Eye with an overhand. She’s had her moments against some of the toughest.”

Since then, Tate has lost her title, as she was absolutely steamrolled by Amanda Nunes in the main event of July 9’s landmark UFC 200 event from Las Vegas, Nevada. Holm, on the other hand, will look to get back on track tonight (July 23, 2016) in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 against Valentina Shevchenko. A title shot could be on the line, but Holm also has her eyes set on revenge:

“I want to avenge a loss,” Holm said. “No matter what — whether she had the belt or not — I still would hate the fact that I lost the fight. Whether it would have been for the belt or not. I want to win no matter what. It doesn’t matter if it’s for the belt or not. So yeah, it’s a sour taste in my mouth, just the loss in itself. Belt or no belt, it would still bother me either way.”
