Middleweight veteran Hector Lombard was scheduled to face The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 11 semi-finalist Brad Tavares at UFC on FOX in Denver, Colorado on Jan. 28. UFC officials confirmed to MMAJunkie.com (via MMAFighting.com) that the bout has been scrapped from the card.

Both fighters suffered injuries and have been pulled as a result.

A middleweight clash between Alessio Di Chirico and Eric Spicely has taken its place. Lombard has gone 0-2, 1 NC in his last three bouts. His bout against Josh Burkman was originally a unanimous decision in his favor. The result was changed to a no contest when the former Bellator middleweight champion tested positive an anabolic steroid. Lombard hasn’t officially won a bout since March 2014.

Tavares has gone 2-2 in his last four outings. The last time he stepped inside the Octagon was against Caio Magalhaes. The Hawaiian edged it out with a split decision victory. He’ll need to wait a little longer to try to win his second straight contest.

In the UFC’s welterweight division, there are no do-overs or second-chances.

Li Jingliang and Yancy Medeiros know this and will try to make a statement against one another this January when they meet at UFC on FOX 23: Shevchenko vs. Pena.

Jingliang, a 28-year-old from China, improved to 11-4 in July when he knocked out Anton Zafir in the first round. The win was his third inside the Octagon, pushing his promotional record to 3-2.

Medeiros (13-4) is looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow Hawaiians BJ Penn and Max Holloway and work his way into the elite in his class. He is 4-2 over his last six, including three submissions vs. Spen Spencer, Joe Proctor and Damon Jackson.

UFC on FOX 23 features a main event between Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena from Denver and the Pepsi Center.

Julianna Pena is currently the UFC’s No. 3-ranked contender in the women’s bantamweight division, and has been heavily campaigning for a shot at the 135-pound title for some time now.

Pena will have the opportunity to solidify her claim to challenge for the title when she takes on No. 2-ranked Valentina Shevchenko in their main event match-up at UFC on FOX 23. After downing former title challenger Cat Zingano at UFC 200 this past July Pena extended her impressive win streak to four, and with a win over the former Muay Thai champion Shevchenko she’ll most likely be next up for the title shot.

If that isn’t the case, however, Pena tells ESPN’s 5ive Rounds Podcast (courtesy of Bloody Elbowthat she’ll most likely seek out employment from a different promotion:

“Maybe I’ll go fight for Combate [Americas] or something because it sounds like they want to pay me serious money and actually give me a belt right off the bat just like they did with Ronda in the UFC,” Peña said. “They just handed Ronda a belt, and Combate will hand me a belt, so I don’t know, we’ll see how that goes.”

‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ also claimed that she believes UFC President Dana White knows inside that she is the clear-cut contender for the title, and that if she is looked over once again she’ll ‘quit’:

“I think Dana knows that I’m a firecracker, and I definitely don’t think that he wants see the wrath that will come if I don’t get a title shot after this,” Peña said. “I would be shocked. I won’t say that it couldn’t happen because anything can happen, especially in this sport.

“But I think that he definitely knows that I’m the clear cut answer for getting a title shot. So I don’t want to even put that in the universe. If I don’t get a title shot, I quit.”

For now Pena will focus her attention on Shevchenko, who comes off of a win over former 135-pound champ Holly Holm, where a win over ‘The Bullet’ could mean a shot at her life-long dream.

Shevchenko and Pena will meet in the main event of UFC on FOX 23 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on January 28, 2017.

Earlier today (Wed., Dec. 14, 2016), it was announced that Colorado native Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone would be taking on Jorge Masvidal at January 28’s UFC on FOX 23 from The Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Now, an intriguing heavyweight battle has also been confirmed for the card.

It was announced on tonight’s edition of the UFC Tonight that No. 8-ranked former champion Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski will square off No. 12-ranked rising prospect Francis Ngannou next month.

Arlovski returned to the UFC in 2014 and rattled off four straight victories, but he’s hit some rough times as of late, as he’s dropped his last three bouts including losses to current champion Stipe Miocic, Alistair Overeem, and Josh Barnett.

Ngannou, on the other hand, possesses a 9-1 overall record and is currently 4-0 inside of the Octagon. “The Predator” owns UFC victories over Luis Henrique, Curtis Blaydes, Bojan Mihajlovic and he most recently submitted Anthony Hamilton earlier this month in Albany.

Will Arlovski get back to his winning ways or will this bout representing a passing of the torch to promote Ngannou from prospect to contender?
