The stage was set for the main event of UFC on FOX 23. After the first three bouts on the main card ended in finishes, it was time for Valentina Shevchenko (14-2) and Julianna Pena (8-3) to shine.

Pena looked to close the distance immediately. She tied up her opponent against the fence. Pena landed some knees to the body. Shevchenko ended up scoring a takedown. “The Venezuelan Vixen” got up quickly and regained control in the clinch.

“Bullet” tripped Pena down to the canvas again. Shevchenko wound up in full guard after landing some hammerfists. Pena went for an armbar, but the round was over.

The second round began and Pena moved into the clinch. They were right back in the same position they were to start the opening round. Pena went for a takedown, but to no avail. She tried again, but this time she completed it. Shevchenko went for an armbar, she got it and forced the tap.

Going into their bout tonight (Jan. 28) at UFC on FOX 23, Donald Cerrone (32-8, 1 NC) and Jorge Masvidal (32-11) had a combined 83 professional mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts. If you put the number of finishes they have achieved, you’d get 38.

Make that 39 finishes, with Masvidal dishing out the punishment.

The Denver crowd was red hot for their hero, “Cowboy.” Cerrone got in a jab. A body kick was there for Cerrone. A jab found the mark for “Gamebred.” Cerrone connected with a counter left hand. Masvidal’s lead leg was already bruised. Masvidal looked to complain of an eye poke, but time wasn’t called.

Blood trickled from the nose of Cerrone. He went for a takedown attempt, but it wasn’t there. A spinning backfist landed for Masvidal. “Gamebred’s” mouth saw a bit of blood. Masvidal landed two right hands. Masvidal dropped Cerrone and “Cowboy” was wobbly getting up. The fight was not stopped, but rather the round was over.

Cerrone looked like he was out on the replay, but the fight was still on.

Cerrone threw a lunging right hand and didn’t look all there in the second round. Masvidal dropped Cerrone again and pieced him up some more before referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.

Final Result: Jorge Masvidal def. Donald Cerrone via TKO (strikes) – Round 2, 1:00

Tonight’s (Jan. 28) UFC on FOX 23 main card opened with a featherweight fracas. The two men trading leather inside the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado were Alex Caceres (12-10, 1 NC) and Jason Knight (17-2).

“The Kid” extended his winning streak to three in exciting fashion.

The two met at the center of the Octagon and engaged immediately. A body kick from Caceres was caught and Knight pushed him against the fence. “Bruce Leeroy” got out quickly. A counter right hand landed for Caceres. Knight landed his own straight right counter.

A combination with two counter strikes found the mark for Knight. A hard leg kick connected for Caceres. “Bruce Leeroy” started to keep his distance. He made “The Kid” miss several shots and landed a right hand. Knight pressured his opponent against the fence, but he couldn’t hold the position for long.

A left hand upstairs followed by a body shot was there for Caceres. A cut formed on Knight’s forehead. Knight dropped Caceres with a counter punch. “Bruce Leeroy” got up, but was slammed to the canvas. Knight went for a rear-naked choke before the round ended.

Round two began and Caceres got in a push kick. Knight caught a kick, but wasn’t able to capitalize. A right hand found the mark for Knight. Caceres moved forward and landed a straight right. They tied up and Knight tripped his opponent. He took the back of “Bruce Leeroy” and secured a body lock. “The Kid” was active with elbows. He went for the choke, but Caceres defended it.

Caceres winced from the shots he was taking. Knight rained down elbows to the shoulder blade. He went for the choke again, but this time he forced the tap.

Final Result: Jason Knight def. Alex Caceres via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 4:21

Sam Alvey vs. Nate Marquardt in a middleweight bout closes the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1.

Raphael Assuncao vs. Aljamain Sterling is next in a bantamweight bout

Li Jingliang vs. Bobby Nash is next in a welterweight bout

Luis Henrique da Silva vs. Jordan Johnson is next in a light heavyweight bout

Alessio Di Chirico vs. Eric Spicely in a middleweight bout is next.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima vs. Jeremy Kimball in a light heavyweight opens the FOX Sports 1 preliminary bouts

Eric Shelton vs. Alexandre Pantoja in a flyweight bout finished off the UFC Fight Pass prelims. In round 1, Shelton gets the takedown right away but Pantoja kicks off and gets back to his feet. Pantoja gets his back midway through the round and worked him over with strikes. Shelton finally able to spin out and hit a double leg. But Pantoja kicks out and gets back up with seconds to go in the round. Shelton took him down to end the round. In round 2, Shelton out of the gate on a low single off a caught body kick from Pantoja. They clinched up against the fence. Shelton with a bad shot that Pantoja stuffed, but Shelton wrestled through it and into a guillotine that he got out of. Pantoja landed a flying knee while Shelton was working for a takedown. Pantoja took him down and got his back and worked him over with strikes. Shelton stayed through it and survived the round. In round 3, Pantoja pressing forward right into a Shelton backfist. Both fighters slowed down in this round. Pantoja shoots from way out and Shelton ragdolls him into the cage. The judges gave the win to Pantoja by split decision. 

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims was Jason Gonzalez vs. J.C. Cottrell in a lightweight bout. Gonzalez threw a lot of kicks early then stunned him with a right hand. However, Cottrell took him down and got guard. Gonzalez scrambled and got to his feet but Cottrell slammed him back down to the ground. Cottrell worked for a north-south choke but let it go. Cottrell had side control and worked him over with shots. Gonzalez locked in a d’arce choke and won the fight. Nice comeback for Gonzalez.
