It’s safe to say the action-packed featherweight main event of last night’s (Sat., February 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 in Orlando, Florida, has the mixed martial arts world in a bit of controversy.

Surging slugger Jeremy Stephens finished formerly rising contender Josh Emmett with a brutal second-round sequence (highlights here) that began with “Lil’ Heathen” dropping the Team Alpha Male product with a pinpoint left hook and ended with him knocking him unconscious with a series of arguably illegal blows including a knee to a downed Emmett and elbows to the back of his head.

Neither was deemed a foul by longtime referee Dan Miragliotta, but many, including Emmett’s TAM head coach Urijah Faber, blasted the finish by calling it clearly illegal. Emmett immediately revealed his plans to appeal the loss to the Florida State Boxing Commission in hopes of receiving a potential no contest outcome.

Finally, FOX Sports 1 post-fight show co-hosts Daniel Cormier and Dominick Cruz, who is Stephens’ teammate at Alliance MMA, even argued about the legality of the blows on live TV, signaling just how controversial the finish was.

Stephens weighed in on the finish on the post-fight show (via MMA Fighting) himself, stating that Miragliotta told him backstage before the fight that if Emmett had one hand on the ground, kneeing him would be legal. Stephens thought that was what was happening, so he said he tried to take full advantage of the situation and the rule:

“The referee, Dan Miragliotta, came in the back, he said, ‘This is the new unified rules, that if two hands are down, you can lift one hand up [and be able] to knee. That’s okay.’ So if he’s on his knees and one hand is up, it’s okay to throw a knee. I’m not a dirty fighter. I never have been, my whole life. I saw an opportunity, I was looking for it.

“I saw exactly what he was going to do. I knew that he was rocked, he had two hands [on the ground], he lifted his hand up and I saw the moment and that’s when I threw the knee. I don’t think the knee even landed, it’s not what hurt him. There was a lot more damage followed up after that. He was even rocked before that. But he did lift his hands and I waited for that hand, and I tried to take advantage of that opportunity. It didn’t land, I missed, but those are the rules in this specific state. I’m not a dirty fighter.”

Indeed Emmett was badly hurt by Stephens’ accurate left hook, but replay showed that the knee in question may not have even landed, and was arguably a glancing blow if it did.

What was perhaps more controversial were the huge elbows Stephens landed to the back of Emmett’s head, but Stephens said Emmett simply turned his head in the heat of the moment as he was trying to end the fight, another grey area of the rules that he said he can’t worry about in the throes of action:

“Guys, look, I’m going for the finish here. I’m looking to elbow, elbow. If they turn their head, the ref will tell you it’s okay because he’s turning his head, so make the adjustment. In that moment, I’m elbowing, elbowing, looking for it. He looked under and I nailed [him with] a couple. When I fought (Doo Ho) Choi, I elbowed the referee in the back of the head, he jumped in front. I’m not a dirty fighter. I am a killer, I train to finish, I’m going for it, I’m landing big shots there. I don’t mean to hit people in the back of the head, but if they turn, it’s not my problem.”

In that context, Stephens does make some strong points even though it appeared he landed at least one egregious elbow.

The whole finish progressed in rapid, chaotic fashion – like most of his violent wins often do – so it was hard for Miragliotta to make a pinpoint break in the action while the bout was nearly over. Controversy surrounds the stoppage nonetheless, and Emmett will have his day to plead his case before the commission.

He’ll have to focus on his recovery first, as he was taken out on a stretcher, something Stephens didn’t want. Overall, he wished his vanquished opponent a speedy recovery:

“I saw Josh Emmett getting [taken] out on a stretcher. I do not wish that upon anybody,” Stephen said. “This is the fight game, this is what happens. I’ve been in this game a long time, I’ve been knocked out before, I’ve had ups and downs.

“I don’t wish that upon anybody. I wish him a speedy recovery. He’s a tough dude.”

You can add Daniel Cormier and Dominick Cruz to the list of people who have different views on the finish of the main event of UFC on FOX 28.

As seen in the main event of the show that took place on Saturday night at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida on big FOX, Jeremy Stephens appeared to land an illegal knee to Josh Emmett while attempting to finish him that ultimately lead to a second-round knockout.

During that sequence, there were also two elbows that Stephens threw that landed to the back of Emmett’s head.

Many people believe that those shots could have been ruled illegal blows.

However, referee Dan Miragliotta did not react to the potential fouls at the moment but instead let the action continue.

The current UFC light heavyweight champion believes that Stephens “got away with one” in finishing Emmett without anything being called illegal.

On the flip side, former UFC bantamweight champion said he didn’t feel like the knee landed. In the event that it did land, then Emmett would have been badly rocked by it.

Cormier and Cruz are not only two of the best fighters in the world but also like to talk and do it very well.

During the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1, they argued about the finish of the fight (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting).

“It didn’t hurt Josh Emmett, but it doesn’t have to,” Cormier countered. “As long as it hits your opponent, it is an illegal shot. It doesn’t have to hurt Josh Emmett. Dom said something to the affect of, that was a nasty knee, if it landed it would have been over immediately. It doesn’t have to be over immediately. As long as it makes contact, it is an illegal blow and it’s over.”

Cruz responded: “Where did it make contact? … Where did it land? It ducks.”

“It touches!” Cormier responded.

Cruz asks, “Where does it touch, bro?”

“Don’t make it seem like I am against Jeremy Stephens, because I am not,” Cormier said. “That’s contact, boys!”

Cruz replied: “You’re wrong.”

Cruz went on to note that it can’t be an illegal knee if the referee “doesn’t call it illegal. Then don’t call it illegal.”

“Dominick, I am just telling you that you’re wearing glasses, you can admit, hey your boy got away with one,” Cormier said. “It’s like me robbing a bank and getting away with it. You can’t be mad at me.”

“I disagree,” Cruz said. “You’re wrong. He missed.”

Josh Emmett Will Appeal Controversial Knockout Loss to Jeremy Stephens

Top-ranked UFC featherweight Josh Emmett saw his momentum come to a halt when he was viciously stopped by Jeremy Stephens (watch highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., February 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Coming off his own upset knockout win over Ricardo Lamas, Emmett fought well in the opening round of his headlining bout with “Lil ‘Heathen,” dropping him with a right hook that made it seem like a truly fearsome knockout artist was beginning to break out.

However, the veteran Stephens exhibited the iron will that’s exemplified his exciting but inconsistent career, persevering to drop Emmett with a monster left hand and finishing it with a barrage of full-power elbows in the second frame. It came with a decent amount of controversy, unfortunately, as it looked like Stephens may have landed an illegal knee on a down Emmett before replay showed he had landed what were some much more obviously illegal elbows to the back of Emmett’s head only seconds before he was brutally knocked out.

Urijah Faber blasted the non-call from Dan Miragliotta and also Dominick Cruz and Michael Bisping for brushing it off, and Emmett predictably has a similar view of the situation. Shortly after the controversial fight ended, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported that Emmett will appeal the loss before the Florida State Boxing Commission.

Instant replay was not available for Miragliotta to use in Florida, which could have possibly changed the outcome if the knee, or more clearly the elbows were made available in slow-motion.

Either way, Emmett will have his day before the Florida commission, but fight appeals are rarely changed in situations like these. The elbows to the back of the head should be easy to spot, so perhaps Emmett does have an outside chance at a no contest and a rematch.

What do you think? Should the Orlando main event have been stopped when Stephens landed the strikes or was the knockout win for ‘Lil’ Heathen’ deserved?

Jeremy Stephens scored a third consecutive win when he brutally knocked out rising star Josh Emmett (highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., February 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, but it didn’t come without some controversy.

There was a debate whether or not Stephens landed an illegal knee, and then possibly a series of illegal elbows, during a hectic finishing sequence where after “Lil’ Heathen” dropped Emmett with a left hook. Referee Dan Miragliotta never stepped in to declare the knee or the elbows illegal, but Emmett and his Team Alpha Male teammates vehemently disagree.

At least one and most likely two of the vicious elbows did hit Emmett in the back of the head.

After the win, FOX Sports 1 post-fight show co-hosts Dominick Cruz, who’s a teammate of Stephens’ at Alliance MMA, and Michael Bisping argued the knee barely grazed Emmett and didn’t ultimately have any bearing on the outcome.

Team Alpha Male coach Urijah Faber disagrees. “The California Kid” blasted Cruz and Bisping about the knee, which was more in question than the elbows given the rapid sequence, on Instagram shortly after the fight by calling it clearly illegal:

“Dominick Cruz and Michael Bisping are f*cking blind. That was a knee to the back of the head. An illegal knee to the illegal back of the head. Give me a friggin’ break. Congratulations to Stephens. He fought a good one.”

It’s at least a little surprising to hear Faber not mention the elbows, which did appear to be much more egregious upon replay review.

Emmett will most likely appeal the loss before the Florida commission presiding over the event, but he could be fighting an uphill battle on this one.

Did longtime ref Miragliotta clearly drop the ball in more than one place in Orlando last night, or was did it all unfold too fast to discern the strikes?
