Booking Roundup: Bedford-Denis, Bermudez-Garza Added to ‘UFC on FOX 3? Card

We’re just a few of months away from the UFC’s return to broadcast tv, but the ‘UFC on FOX 3’ card is still filling out.

When we last (and first) saw Nick Denis, he was caving in the skull of Joseph Sandoval via standing hellbows on the ‘UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller‘ card. That impressive 22-second debut has earned him a return bout against TUF alum Johnny Bedford. “Brutal” fell to season 14 champion John Dodson in the show’s semi-finals, but returned at the TUF 14 Finale to absolutely bulldoze future-flyweight Louis Gaudinot.

Two other TUF vets, Dennis Bermudez and Pablo Garza, will square off on the May 5th card. Bermudez looked to be seconds away from finishing off Diego Brandao when the crafty Brazilian latched on an armbar and snagged the first ever TUF featherweight plaque. Garza lost his elimination bout to enter the season 12 Ultimate Fighter house as well as his WEC debut, but was brought to the UFC where he picked up consecutive first round stoppages over Fredson Paixao (via “Lawn Chair KO“) and Yves Jabouin. “The Scarecrow” is looking to bounce back from his second round submission loss to the streaking Dustin Poirier.

The rest of the card is after the jump.

Brian Stann Hired as Analyst for Future UFC on FOX Events

Props: @BrianStann

If nothing else, at least the commentary will be much better for UFC on FOX 3 than the organization’s previous attempts on the network.

Those of you who tuned in for UFC on FUEL: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger more than likely left impressed by Brian Stann’s commentary throughout the evening. Already known for his ability to produce the most professional responses during interviews at will, Brian Stann seamlessly transitioned to the role of analyst. Stann was very confident while analyzing the fights, handling his first commentary gig like it was just another day at the office. Needless to say, the impressive showing granted him a role as an analyst for future UFC on FOX events.

The UFC’s attempts to give fighters active roles as commentators during UFC on FOX broadcasts have seen mixed results. The organization’s debut on FOX saw Brock Lesnar do a great job in both analyzing the fights and promoting his upcoming bout with Overeem. However, when Lesnar lost that fight and subsequently retired, the UFC could not continue to use him. It attempted to fill the void he left with UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

Any momentum that Randy Couture built with his solid commentary during UFC on FOX 2 was completely destroyed by Jon Jones’ nightmarish performance. From blatantly reading his “analysis” (perhaps “his” analysis is more appropriate) of the fights to nervously laughing his way through questions about Rashad Evans, Jones couldn’t have done a worse job at earning new fans for both himself and the UFC if he choked out Curt Menefee and refused to check on him. At least Evans seemed to enjoy Jones’ performance, albeit for the wrong reasons.

Before Stann’s next commentary gig, he has a fight against Alessio Sakara at UFC on FUEL 2. That fight goes down on April 14th in Stockholm, Sweden.

It’s still a few months away, but the UFC’s next show on FOX already has fans buzzing about one of the most exciting cards put together for free TV in a long time.

With two fights that could easily determine the next challengers for the lightweight and welterweight belts and another couple of bouts that could easily pull fight of the night honors, this card is four fights deep and it’s stacked.

Nate Diaz and Jim Miller are set to go for five rounds in the main event, and as both are among the hardest fighters to finish in the sport, we could easily see a five-round war.

Throw in entertaining bouts with Josh Koscheck taking on Johny Hendricks and Alan Belcher looking to keep his limbs against Rousimar Palhares, and the card is already a must-see.

But with hard-hitting heavyweights Lavar Johnson and Pat Barry set to open the main card, fans should be sure not to miss a second of this event.

Recent winner of The Ultimate Fighter, John Dodson is set to return to the Octagon come this May against a formidable opponent.

The bantamweight-turned-flyweight will be looking to build upon a first-round TKO victory over TJ Dillashaw when he takes on the wily Darren Uyenoyama.

UFC on FOX 3 takes place at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where lightweight’s Nate Diaz and Jim Miller meet in the main event.

Despite the attention that both 155-pound contenders will garner, Uyenoyama and Dodson will be a front-runner for “Fight of the Night,” as the two notables appear to be dark horses of the flyweight division, where either man could make a quick ascension up the ranks with an imminent victory.

UFC on FOX 3 is getting closer to all of us in the MMA world, and so far, the card’s looking like the quality of card that most fans would love to see either on FOX, FX, and/or FUEL TV.

Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller serves as the headliner to the card that comes live on May 5 at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

Also on the card is a heavyweight bout featuring Pat Barry and Lavar Johnson, John Hathaway vs. Pascal Krauss in the Welterweight division, John Dodson vs. Darren Uyenoyama in Dodson’s Flyweight return and Uyenoyama’s Flyweight debut, Danny Castillo vs. John Cholish in what should be a promising “East Coast vs. West Coast” Lightweight bout, and Mike Massenzio vs. Karlos Vemola in a do-or-die bout for the Middleweight known as the “Master of Disaster” that also serves as Vemola’s Middleweight debut.

Also, Louis “Goodnight” Gaudinot faces John Lineker in Gaudinot’s Flyweight return and Lineker’s Flyweight debut, just added to the card is a Welterweight bout of Johny “Big Rig” Hendricks vs. Josh Koscheck and on tap for the card is a Middleweight clash between Rousimar Palhares and Alan Belcher.

Believe it or not, though, the card is not even complete yet, but it already looks like the kind of card that might produce an effect similar to that of The Ultimate Fighter’s Season 1 Finale.

Sure, not every fight is going to be a barn-burner, and truthfully, it’s tough to see anyone calling up their friends to talk about Vemola vs. Massenzio, but consider fights like Barry vs. Johnson, the Flyweight fights, Hathaway-Krauss, and especially the Diaz-Miller headliner.

The Flyweights set an unreal pace in fights, making them a blast to watch in action, while Barry and Johnson swing hard and swing with the intention to finish every time, and Hathaway vs. Krauss could be the sleeper of the card.

All that being said, do you remember the last time a Nate Diaz fight sucked, aside from Gray Maynard’s fight with Diaz?

Okay, fine, you can have Dong Hyun Kim if you so choose, but do you remember the last time a Jim Miller fight sucked?

Exactly, you don’t, and stylistically, both are skilled enough to make the fight a blockbuster no matter where the fight goes.

Add the fact that every fight with a Diaz brother starts with the signing of the contracts, meaning Diaz and Miller could easily jaw off before we even hit fight week, and it’s all the way possible that your phone could go off more than once during the fight thanks to someone calling or texting you about the fight.

Are you watching Diaz vs. Miller?

If you’re not planning on it now, you might want to plan on it, because this one may get intense come fight time.

Palhares Versus Belcher Slated for May 5 ‘UFC on Fox 3? Card

(And, yes, Dana has unblocked us on Twitter…Baby steps, right?)

UFC president Dana White announced this afternoon that a middleweight bout between Rousimar “The Kneejerk” Palhares and Alan “The Talent” Belcher has been signed for the May 5 UFC on Fox 3 card.

The event, which will take place at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will also feature Jim Miller versus Nate Diaz and Josh Koscheck versus Johny Hendricks on the main card.

UFC president Dana White announced this afternoon that a middleweight bout between Rousimar “The Kneejerk“ Palhares and Alan “The Talent” Belcher has been signed for the May 5 UFC on Fox 3 card.

The event, which will take place at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will also feature Jim Miller versus Nate Diaz and Josh Koscheck versus Johny Hendricks on the main card.

5-1 in his last six outings, including a questionable split-decision to Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100 in July 2009, Belcher returned from a serious eye injury that kept him out of action for a year to beat Jason MacDonald in September at UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger. A win over Palhares could put him in line for a title shot in 2012.

Paul Harris is no slouch himself, having won six of his last seven — including three nasty heelhook and one vicious kneebar submissions in that stretch. He was suspended for 90 days for failing to release a heelhook after Tomasz Drwal tapped out at UFC 111. During his UFC tenure, he has beaten Jeremy Horn, Ivan Salaverry and Dan Miller. He dropped a decision to Dan Henderson and also lost by brainfart TKO to Nate Marquardt after attempting to protest to referee Herb Dean mid-round about the latter having grease on his legs during their UFC Fight Night: Marquardt vs. Palhares main event bout. Marquardt capitalized on “Toquino’s” inattentiveness and caught the Brazilian off guard, stopping him with strikes.
