UFC on Fuel TV 10 delivered submission after submission. It broke the record for most submissions in a single UFC event with eight.

In the main event, No. 3-ranked heavyweight Fabricio Werdum tapped Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the second round. A feat the first of its kind.

Eleven other bouts were in action. Brazilians had a very successful night against the foreign contingent that made the trip down. Saturday night was all about the home nation. The raucous crowd got to enjoy a night of domination from their local fighters.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Saturday night, in the UFC’s seventh modern-era card held in Brazil, everything came together for the home team, and a little bit of history was made. Eight submissions occurred on the evening, setting a single-event UFC record for the Zuffa era.

Yep, it was pretty much a jiu-jitsu clinic, from Antonio Braga Neto’s brutal show-opening kneebar to the culminator between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum. Here are grades for every fighter on the main card.

Fabricio Werdum Wants to Wait for Velasquez/Dos Santos 3 to Decide What’s Next

Fabrcio Werdum waited seven years to finally get a second shot at Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but he certainly made the most of it during the main event of UFC on Fuel 10 Saturday night in Brazil.

When the pair of heavyweights first met in Pride Fighting Championships back in 2006, Nogueira was the veteran facing a much younger and inexperienced version of Werdum.

This time around, Werdum was the rising star planted in the top five of the division hoping to secure his spot in the title contender’s race with a win over the legendary former UFC and Pride champion.

While both fighters come from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background, Werdum felt going into the fight that his ground game was superior, and that’s where he’d have the biggest advantage over Nogueira.

It worked out well because Werdum locked up a fight-ending armbar that brought a stop to  the fight after Nogueira struggled to get loose of the hold, but alas could not and gave up via verbal submission.

“I feel great. Nogueira is a legend in the sport,” Werdum said about his opponent during the UFC on Fuel 10 post-fight show.  “He’s my good friend. I’m very happy with the win but he punches very hard. When I saw the opportunity to go on the ground, I got the armbar.

My strategy was to fight with force. I got him on the ground because I had more possibilities on the ground. When I punched him, he went on his back and I got the armbar.”

With the win, Werdum secures his spot as the top contender in the heavyweight division behind champion Cain Velasquez and current challenger Junior Dos Santos. Those two fighters are expected to square off later this year in their third bout to close out their trilogy for the heavyweight title.

Currently, Velasquez and Dos Santos have each won one time, so this will be a pivotal third and final rubber match.

That unfortunately leaves Werdum as the odd man out either waiting for several months to possibly get the winner of that fight, or taking the risk of fighting again in the interim and risking a title shot.

Werdum already sat out a full year while taking the opportunity to coach on The Ultimate Fighter: Brasil 2 alongside Nogueira. If he sits and waits for the winner of Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, which still hasn’t been scheduled, Werdum could end up being out again for several months.

“I think if the UFC gave me the opportunity, for sure I’d bring a lot now,” Werdum said about a potential title shot. “I think I’d wait and see who won the fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.”

It appears for now that Werdum will play the waiting game until the heavyweight title picture is settled.  While no date has been set for the third fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos, the earliest the bout could take place would likely be September, with all other fight cards already having established main events between now and then.

Even if the heavyweight title fight takes place in September, it’s not likely the winner would return until the end of 2013, so Werdum could face another lengthy time off if that’s the case.

Now it’s up to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and UFC President Dana White to determine if Werdum should sit and get the winner, or if they will keep him busy later this year.

UFC on Fuel 10 may not have been the most star-studded event, but that didn’t stop it from producing a bevy of fast-paced fights or impressive stoppages.

All told, 10 of the event’s 12 contests failed to make it to the final bell. That means two things: There was a lot exciting moments, and the competition for the fight night bonuses was stiff.

To find out who cashed in for Saturday night’s $50,000 bonuses, read on.

Knockout of the Night: Thiago Silva

There were plenty of finishes at UFC on Fuel 10, but only two came by way of knockout. Felipe Arantes hammered his way to victory over Godofredo Castro, using some vicious ground-and-pound to earn a stoppage victory in his Facebook prelim match.

Unfortunately for Arantes, the win, while impressive, wasn’t enough to earn him a bonus check. That honor went to Thiago Silva for his work against Rafael Cavalcante.

After a back and forth beginning to the light heavyweight contest, Silva began to come on as Round 1 drew to a close, while Cavalcante started to fade. It made for a perfect storm, and Silva landed a perfect uppercut that netted him a nice sum of extra dough.

Submission of the Night: Erick Silva

Antonio Braga Neto started the submission parade by stopping Anthony Smith in the night’s first affair, but if he thought he’d coast to a bonus, he was quickly corrected.

Seven additional submissions later, it was Erick Silva who got the nod for the slick armbar he sunk in against Jason High.

The submission was the second of Silva’s UFC career, and it only took him a grand total of 1:11 to secure.

Fight of the Night: Thiago Silva vs. Rafael Cavalcante

Being on the wrong end of a Knockout of the Night probably isn’t a great feeling, but winning Fight of the Night honors has to soften the blow a bit. So while Cavalcante’s UFC debut left a lot to be desired, at least he’ll be able to afford plenty of comfort food to get over it.

And how about Silva reeling in multiple awards? Talk about having a night. The light heavyweight vet put in less than five minutes of work, but pocketed $100,000 in bonus money.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Fabricio Werdum took another step toward his first UFC title shot on Saturday, when he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the UFC on Fuel TV 10 main event.

Undefeated since returning to the Octagon, Werdum has emerged as one of the top contenders in the heavyweight division and could even be next in line for a title shot behind former opponent Junior dos Santos. Nogueira, meanwhile, continues his pattern of alternating wins and losses as his career winds down.

UFC on Fuel TV 10 also crowned the winner of the TUF: Brazil 2 welterweight tournament. Though he lost in the competition’s semifinals, Leonardo Santos replaced Santiago Ponzinibbio and defeated William Patalino to earn a guaranteed UFC contract.

With another UFC event in the books, let’s take a look at what should be next for Werdum, Nogueira and the rest of the UFC on Fuel TV 10 competitors.

When grappling wizards face off in the UFC Octagon, they often avoid going to the mat at all costs. Instead, two jiu-jitsu experts, knowing the other man is very dangerous on the ground, sometimes end up in an ugly slugfest, standing and banging despite a palpable lack of skill in either boxing or kickboxing.

Their own beautiful art, one they’ve spent decades perfecting, is left by the wayside.

Luckily for fight fans, that didn’t happen when two of MMA‘s best heavyweight submission artists butted heads in Fortaleza, Brazil Saturday night. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum went right at each other where both were strongest.

The result?

Some fascinating exchanges on the mat, ending with Werdum’s second-round armbar submission. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu stalwart, the first and only man ever to submit the legendary Fedor Emelianenko, will likely be next in line for a UFC heavyweight title shot, making him the night’s clear winner.

But Werdum was not alone. There were winners and losers up and down the fight card, both the official winners who will have their names written in history and the men who won the hearts and minds of the crowd with a valiant effort in defeat.
