UFC on FX 1 press conference with Jorge Rivera as he talks about his victory over Eric Schafer, why he’s retiring, when he made the decision and what he feels defines his legacy and more.

If Rivera is satisfied with his decision to retire: “Yeah, I thought about it long and hard. I would have probably retired in August, but I didn’t want to go out with an L. So I was very happy with tonight’s result.”

If it was a hard decision to decide to retire: “It wasn’t a hard decision at all. I’m getting older. I’m gonna be 40 this year and I see some of these young guys like Melvin (Guillard) and Jim (Miller) and Pat (Barry). These guys are young and they’re no joke. My reflexes are slowing down, I got a family to take care of. I don’t want to suffer a serious injury to where it might complicate that. I’m very happy with what I’ve done here and very happy with what it gave back to me and it’s time to go. I’m happy to come out with a W.”

When he made the decision to retire and when he told the UFC: “I would say probably the start of camp. I had a school opening up and I was cutting time between training and opening the school see the future and what I wanted to do and how I wanted to go about it. I’ve had enough. I told Dana (White) at the weigh-in yesterday and then I told MMAJunkie this afternoon.”

UFC on FX 1 Results: How Far Away Is Jim Miller from a Title Shot?

The win Jim Miller scored over Melvin Guillard this past Saturday on the UFC on FX 1 card was a real step in the right direction, but a rematch opposite either Frankie Edgar or Benson Henderson should not follow just yet.

Miller needed a win to prove he still belonged in the title scene, and when he took a monstrous shot from Guillard and still managed to get the back of Guillard for a rear-naked choke for the win, he seemed to make his case, but he’s not out of the woods yet.

Luckily for Miller, he earned the Submission of the Night bonus, which works well at a time in which Daniel Miller Jr., the nephew of the UFC on FX 1 headliner and the second child of Jim’s brother Dan, has publicly been battling polycystic kidney disease.

What may not come with such luck is a title shot, but of course Jim Miller has earned a top-level opponent.

The logical first choice for the New Jersey native’s next opponent is the winner of the rumored UFC 145 bout between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida.

Guida pushes the type of pace one needs to put Miller in any sort of trouble, and Maynard’s seven-fight streak of decision wins includes a UFC 96 win over Miller. While Miller vs. Guida would be a dream lightweight fight, Miller might not have reservations about avenging the first loss of his UFC career, as Miller and Maynard are both better fighters than they were at UFC 96.

At a UFC on FX 1 press conference with Melvin Guillard, he discusses his defeat to Jim Miller in the main event Friday night, the status of his ground game, whether he regrets changing camps, what went wrong in the fight, where he views himself in the lightweight division and more.

On his performance:

I came in tonight very focused. The key for me to my success right now is to be patient. I thought I had Jim hurt. He’s very tough. For me to hurt a guy like Jim, I didn’t want to overdo it and just fatigue my arms, so I tried to back off and reset and go back in again. I’m still having trouble figuring out how he caught my back. I don’t regret changing camps. I’ve been working on my back escapes and it’s crazy. I knew what exactly to do to get him off my back but when he grabbed me, he had it tight at that point. I couldn’t do anything.

On the people criticizing his jiu-jitsu and why it is still a continuing problem:

It wasn’t a problem. I mean, I did everything right. I knew exactly how to shake him off my back. I just happened, when he jumped on my back, I was actually going to go down, so I could pull his arm away from my throat. But when he reset, it shook me. He collapsed my hip and I fell down. At that point, I had to try to roll over to the other side. I was sticking to the basics of what I learned. You know a lot of people criticize my ground game, I’m not going to sit here and think I have the best ground game because obviously I don’t. I’ve lost fights on submissions. To lose to a guy like Jim, I wasn’t emotional about this loss like I was for the [Joe] Lauzon fight because I really feel in my heart the Lauzon fight was a fluke.

UFC on FX 1 Video: Pat Barry Says His Ground Game Is Not ‘Garbage’

UFC heavyweight Pat Barry discusses his fight victory over Christian Morecraft, improvements in his ground game and whether he can compete for the title and more.

Pat Barry on whether he is going back to his old haircut:

“I made a deal. I haven’t done this since high schoolthat I was not going to cut the top of my hair until I submit somebody in the octagon. Probably means that I’m going to have a Clay Guida in a little while. That’s the plan for now. I’m bringing it back. Somebody actually wrote, Snooki got taller at the weigh-ins. The hair is going to be here for a bit.”

On the progression of his ground game in the fight:

“Well, I’ve said I’m finally the smallest guy in the room in Death Clutch. I’m finally the smallest guy there. We got Brock Lesnar, Cole Konrad who is a monster, Jon Madsen, a bunch of other guys.

We got Marty Morgan, who is a world-renowned wrestling coach. we’ve got Comprido who is also our ji-jitsu coach. So i have been able and given the opportunity finally roll around and grapple and get stronger with a bunch of guys who are a lot bigger than i am. I mean Christian Morecraft fell on top of me. Christian Morecraft went for submissions. But if you can become accustomed to Cole Konrad trying to pull your arm or Brock Lesnar trying to squeeze your head off, then everybody else you tend to stay a little bit more calm and relaxed.

Whereas before, back in the day as soon as you grabbed my forearm I just started tapping everything. I am definitely growing. my ground game is not as garbage as the world thinks.

I actually had a guillotine for about three seconds. I don’t know if you all saw that. But I had it in for about three seconds then I got taken down. That sucks. Sorry, Marty.”

At the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., UFC on FX became an instant success.

From the preliminary portion of the event to the main card, all bouts were exciting and fan friendly, though the real story of the night were the lightweights, as former contenders Melvin Guillard and Jim Miller took center stage.

The New Jersey native managed to weather an early barrage from “The Young Assassin,” eventually cinching up the rear-naked choke inside of the first round.

The win helped ascend Miller back into the upper echelon of the division, though Guillard’s stock plummeted with his second defeat in as many bouts.

The lightweight division is notoriously unforgiving and always changing, so in the end, where does the weight class sit as a whole?
