In the final Prelim fight for UFC on FX 1, veterans Jorge Rivera and Eric Schafer met in a middleweight battle.

At age 39, Rivera was able to pull off a second-round TKO in what will be his final MMA fight.

What We’ll Remember about This Fight

In what will go down as Rivera’s last fight, he was able to do what he’s done so much throughout his life, fight back through adversity.

Schafer was able to dominate the first round of this fight by scoring many takedowns.

Rivera fought his way back into the fight, though, showing just how much heart he has.

Rivera was able to stuff a takedown in the second and landed some hard shots that were left unanswered by Schafer.

What We Learned about Jorge Rivera

We learned that Rivera has heart and continues to come back from adversity.

Rivera was able to adjust and come back in this fight much like he has so much throughout his life.

He may not have been one of the UFC’s top fighters, but Rivera left us with some memorable moments, including the war of words leading up to his grudge match with Michael Bisping

What We Learned about Eric Schafer

Eric Schafer showed great wrestling in the first round of the fight.

But once he got hit by Rivera, he could not answer back.

Schafer has OK wrestling and grappling, but he is not that well-rounded.

What’s Next for Rivera?

Rivera can now ride into the sunset on a high note, something that many fighters don’t get to do.

Rivera can now focus on family and training others.

What’s Next for Schafer?

Schafer has now lost his second straight fight and is 1-4 in his last five.

If the UFC decides to keep Schafer, a matchup with “Filthy” Tom Lawler or Dan Miller could be next with the loser being cut.

Pat Barry, Christian Morecraft, Jim Miller and Nick Denis were each awarded post-fight bonuses of $45,000 for their performances Friday at UFC on FX in Nashville.

In the Fight of the Night, heavyweight striker Pat Barry battled back from numerous submission attempts to TKO Christian Morecraft with ground and pound punches.

The end came when Barry slipped a left hook to land a leaping left hook of his own to floor Morecraft. Barry pounced and referee Herb Dean called a stop to the fight at three minutes and 38 seconds of the opening round.

The Submission of the Night involved another comeback. Jim Miller weathered through a knockdown to capitalize on opponent Melvin Guillard‘s weakness in submission defense. During a scramble, Miller hopped on a standing Guillard and pulled him to the ground to set up the rear-naked choke. Miller locked in the body triangle and forced the tapout at two minutes and four seconds of the first.

Sengoku and King of the Cage veteran Nick Denis needed only 22 seconds to win his UFC debut and collect the Knockout of the Night. The Canadian bantamweight brutally finished Joseph Sandoval with rapid-fire right elbows from standing.

Dana White, president of the UFC, takes us through the week building up to the events that will unfold tonight on UFC on FX.

The look behind the scenes gives insight on the work put into managing these events and making sure everything comes together.

It is, however, unlike most organizations. It’s safe to say that White isn’t the most professional of guys. He is very casual and, at times, vulgar with his comments.

But isn’t that what makes the president of a fighting organization appealing?

The look behind the scenes shows multiple issues the organization was confronted with heading up to the event. It also shows a behind the scenes look on the set of The Ultimate Fighter.

During the video, White also has a short interview with fighter and upcoming coach on The Ultimate Fighter, Urijah Faber. Faber makes predictions for the fights tonight that may surprise you.

The video closes with sights and sounds from on stage for the weigh-ins.

The video blogs are something new to the UFC. White says at the start of the video that it’s not something he typically does. It’s something he should continue doing in the future as it gives good insight for fans on what really happens behind the scenes.

UFC on FX Live Blog: Mike Easton vs. Jared Papazian Updates

Filed under:

This is the UFC on FX live blog for Mike Easton vs. Jared Papazian, a bantamweight bout on tonight’s main card from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Easton (11-1) won his UFC debut last October with a second-round TKO over Byron Bloodworth. Papazian (14-6), coming off a stint as King of the Cage bantamweight champion, is making his UFC debut.

The live blog is below.

Mario Yamasaki is the referee.

Round 1: Easton and Papazian collide into a half-Muay Thai clinch and they perform a bantamweight version of Frye vs. Takayama. Easton presses Papazian against the cage. Papazian connects on a short elbow and reverses Easton. Easton tries knees in clinch. The bantamweights are in a very active battle for position in clinch. But with neither fighter close to landing a big shot or takedown, Yamasaki separates them. They trade leg kicks. Papazian catches a leg kick but isn’t able to attempt the takedown. Papazian swings for the fences. Easton keeps a tight boxing defense with hands high and chin tucked. Easton misses on a spinning back kick to the delight of the crowd. Easton slams a kick into the left leg of Papazian. They exchange punches in clinch again to close an active first round. Very close round. Slight edge to Easton. MMA Fighting scores the first round 10-9 for Easton.

Round 2: Easton stalks and they’re both eyeing a knockout. Easton lands a leg kick and straight right. They clinch. Easton gains double underhooks but Papazian digs with his right arm and reverses Easton against the cage. Yamasaki separates them with around 2:20 to go. Papazian lands a right and then a nice back kick glances the body of Easton. They clinch again and this time Easton lands a trip takedown into Papazian’s halfguard. Easton soon after passes to side. Papazian escapes to halfguard and then to his feet as they return to clinch. Papazian pushes Easton’s head away to separate. Easton stalks. Papazian shoots but Easton finishes on top. It looks like Papazian might have pulled guard or Easton reversed. MMA Fighting scores the second 10-9 for Easton.

Round 3: Easton’s leg kick is almost caught. They exchange very fast punches. But there’s no way they can keep that pace without someone going down and they clinch. Yamasaki separates them. Papazian takes a short breather as his body language tells Yamasaki he was kneed low. After the brief timeout, they clinch and then separate. They box in the pocket. Both fighters are landing decent shots. Easton connects a nice right. Papazian battles back. Easton responds with a left hook. We’re probably going to need CompuStrike especially for this round. Somehow neither fighter has been stunned, though. Easton grabs the Muay Thai clinch with just over two minutes left. Papazian connects on a number of jabs. Easton trips Papazian, but Papazian quickly recovers. More closed-distance boxing to close the fight. Both fighters deserve a shot at Fight of the Night for this gutsy performance. MMA Fighting scores the third round 10-9 for Easton. Easton should win at least two of the rounds. The first was super close.

Mike Easton wins via majority decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-29)
