Fans may have to wait until March 3 for the UFC on FX 2 card, but they will finally see the arrival of the flyweight division.

Most casual fans won’t care or even have known it was coming, but longtime MMA fans are excited. Flyweights bring exciting bouts just like bantamweights and featherweights. Now, even the smallest men in MMA will get a chance to make money in the sport.

The only question is, who will end up winning the tournament? There are four participants, and though some serious names have been overlooked, the winner will have a claim to being one of the best at 125 pounds.

But who is going to win?

The competitors are former bantamweights Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson with UFC newcomers Yasuhiro Urushitani and Ian McCall. While Urushitani and McCall are great choices for the tournament, Benavidez and Johnson got spots out of convenience.

After all, it made it so the UFC didn’t need to sign two more fighters for their roster.

Both UFC fighters will be squaring off against the new talents and who wins will determine who fights for the title.

Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall is a fight of two men who were both beaten by bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. McCall lost to Cruz at WEC 38 while Johnson lost to him on UFC on versus card.

McCall is a bit of a jack of all trades while Johnson is a bit sharper in submissions, but against top opposition, both men usually go the distance.

As much as Johnson was able to overwhelm Cruz in striking, he is now facing someone who is his size, and McCall won’t have to try to adjust to Johnson’s speed. He will match it.

McCall is best known for beating top flyweight Jussier Da Silva, but he didn’t really have any notable wins before that and he hasn’t had any since then either.

Johnson may have lost to Cruz, but has beaten top competitors at bantamweight like Miguel Torres and Japanese star Norifumi Yamamoto. Coupled with the fact that McCall will be fighting in the UFC for the first time, something that has tripped other fighters up in the past, Johnson will win a decision with superior wrestling.

The fight between Joseph Benavidez and Yasuhiro Urushitani is a bit more difficult to predict. While Benavidez has beaten every bantamweight he’s stepped into the cage with other than Cruz, he isn’t facing someone unknown.

Urushitani has beaten Ultimate Fighter winner John Dodson, Mamoru Yamaguchi and even has a draw with the top flyweight, Shinichi Kojima. The only problem with Urushitani is his lack of finishing power, with 14 of his wins coming by decision, and the fact that few of his fights have been in a cage.

Urushitani has fought in a cage before but never with someone who has the amateur wrestling credentials that Benavidez brings. Benavidez isn’t a finisher himself, but he has gotten used to the Octagon and knows how to manipulate it.

While Urushitani could pull out the win, it doesn’t seem likely. It may sound boring, but just like the Johnson fight, this should end in a decision victory for Benavidez.

It may not be a dangerous bet, but both UFC veterans should sweep their fights and meet in the finals making one of them a successful UFC champion.

Who that will be is the interesting part.

UFC on FX 2: Martin Kampmann vs. Thiago Alves Breakdown

In early-March, two talented welterweights will meet in the main event of UFC on FX 2, and attempt to reclaim their spots as top 10 fighters in the division.

Considered 170-pound champion Georges St-Pierre’s biggest threat in mid-2009, Thiago Alves lost three out of four fights, and dropped out of the top 10 welterweight rankings altogether.

At UFC 138, Alves bounced back with a submission win over Papy Abedi. The Brazilian will now hope to earn consecutive victories for the first time since October 2008, by beating Martin Kampmann.

With wins over the likes of Carlos Condit and Paulo Thiago, Kampmann was nearing contender status as he headed into a fight with Jake Shields in October 2010. However, the Xtreme Couture product then suffered back-to-back setbacks, in controversial losses to Shields and Diego Sanchez.

If he can follow up a bounce-back win over Rick Story with a victory over Alves, Kampmann would be well on his way to becoming a serious title threat.

Undoubtedly, this will be a pivotal fight for both Alves and Kampmann, so let’s see which fighter has a better chance at picking up a second straight win.

UFC on FX 1 is in the books, and while we have our own questions about UFC on FOX 2, let us not forget that on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, the UFC will return to Sydney, Australia. The action-packed night of fights will emanate from the Allphones Arena (aka The Sydney Super Dome) and appear live on FX, with preliminaries on Fuel TV.

Headlining this night of fights are Thiago “Pitbull” Alves and Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann, who both officially went 1-1 in 2011—though Kampmann unofficially went 2-0. Nevertheless, both are coming off of year-ending wins and will face each other for the first time.

Also for the first time in UFC history, the 125-lb. flyweight division finally blasts off in what could appropriately be considered a two-part, co-main event.

The first part will feature Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson against consensus world-ranked No. 1 flyweight and former Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Champion “Uncle Creepy” Ian McCall. The second half will feature the long-awaited flyweight debut of Joseph Benavidez against the consistently top-ranked flyweight and slick counter-striker Yasuhiro Urushitani.

Wrapping up the main card of action is a middleweight bout between fast-rising TUF 11 would-have-been Costa Philippou and TUF 11 winner Court “The Crusher” McGee, both of whom have shown a willingness to finish on the feet and on the ground.

It’ll be all right there on March 3rd in Sydney. And, as the fight-drunken stupor from the events of the first UFC event on FX have worn off, we’d like to use the rest of our fight-drunkenness to drive 12 things home in this UFC on FX 2 edition of “Sober Truths.”

Ian McCall will make his UFC debut in March at UFC on FX 2 in Australia against recent UFC bantamweight title challenger Demetrious Johnson. And as a representative of UFC’s new flyweight division, McCall (11-2) wants to introduce himself to fans in a dramatic way.

“I became No. 1 for a reason,” McCall said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I rededicated myself, I think that [135-pounders] don’t finish people enough. I’m a finisher. I can make it exciting. I can make it what people want to see. That’s one thing I can promise that people will be always be happy after I fight.”

McCall admits his first experience under the Zuffa banner was underwhelming. Fighting for the Zuffa-era WEC in 2007 and 2009, McCall compiled a 1-2 record with the promotion.

“I kinda blew it in the WEC,” the 27-year-old said. “I took it for granted. I didn’t work very hard.”

Since his last WEC fight, McCall has won four straight, including a win over Jussier da Silva to earn his No. 1 standing at flyweight.

Now, McCall will take on Johnson in the semifinals of an unofficial tournament to crown the first-ever UFC flyweight champion. Top contender Joseph Benavidez will take on 123-pound Shooto champ Yasuhiro Urushitani on the other side of the bracket.

McCall thinks Johnson is the ideal opponent to show what he’s all about.

“i really, really wanted this fight because he’s so talented,” McCall said. “And also because he’s riding so high and everyone is so stoked on him. I think it’s a good fight for me. I think I match up well — not only to win but to make it exciting. I like challenging myself. I don’t want to go in there and fight some random guy who sucks. I want to fight the best.”
