Former UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker has revealed he suffered a laceration to his foot, and potentially fractured some of his toes in his UFC Paris victory over one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori on Saturday – joking how he will have to reconsider throwing kicks in the future.
Whittaker, a former middleweight champion under the promotion’s banner and the current #1 ranked division contender, turned in a savvy and vintage striking display against Trento challenger, Vettori over the course of three rounds at the Accor Arena in the promotion’s first visit to France, en route to a unanimous decision win.
The victory returned Robert Whittaker to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since February of this year, where he unsuccessfully pried the undisputed middleweight title from two-time foe, Israel Adesanya in a close championship rematch at UFC 271.
Robert Whittaker details leg injury suffered at UFC Paris
Retaining his status as number one contender at 185lbs post-UFC Paris, Whittaker revealed during a post-fight interview with UFC roving reporter, Megan Olivi how he had suffered another foot injury during his co-headlining win against Vettori.
“I think I cut me (sic) toe open,” Robert Whittaker said. “And maybe broke a couple (toes) on the end there – I gotta stop kicking, it hurts me foot too much.
Launching on several occasions with an almost patented ducking round kick, Whittaker failed to land clean on Vettori throughout with numerous offerings, clipping the Italian’s elbow to boot as the Kings MMA staple blocked and defended offense.
The Belo Horizonte native featured just last month, in fact, turning in his own impressive unanimous decision win over former division champion, Luke Rockhold in the co-main event of UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With eyes fixed on last night’s UFC Paris co-headliner between former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker, and former opponent, Marvin Vettori – Brazilian contender, Paulo Costa has urged Whittaker to remain at 185lbs, maintaining he would push the pace if paired with him in the future. Costa, who co-headlined UFC 278 last month against former middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, landed a unanimous decision win over the Santa Cruz native in Salt Lake City – snapping a run of two consecutive losses to champion, Israel Adesanya, and the aforenoted, Vettori.
Retaining his rank atop the middleweight division beneath Adesanya last night in the promotion’s first outing in France, Whittaker secured a rather comfortable and one-sided unanimous decision win over Italian challenger, Vettori – turning in a vintage striking performance.
Paulo Costa teases a future fight with Robert Whittaker at middleweight
Teasing a potential light heavyweight division leap following two career losses to Adesanya, Whittaker, who maintains a move to 205lbs would be a more healthy option for him, has been urged to rethink a move amid interest in a fight from Belo Horizonte striker, Paulo Costa.
“When I fight (Robert) Whittaker it won’t be by decision,” Paulo Costa tweeted following UFC Paris. “I’ll go for the knockout. I hope he doesn’t change divisions before then.”
Targeting a return to the Octagon next year, Costa, who challenged Adesanya for undisputed spoils back in September 2019, recently underwent surgery to address a hand fracture suffered in his blood-and-guts judging win over Rockhold last month at the Vivint Arena.
Reflecting on his pair of title losses to Adesanya following his impressive display against Vettori, Whittaker insisted he is the most “dangerous” fighter at middleweight today.
“I’m the most dangerous man in the division,” Robert Whittaker told assembled media. “Israel’s (Adesanya) the champ. He beat me twice, hats off to him for that. He’s a great fighter, he really is. And I think stylistically he’s a great fighter, but I still think I’m the most dangerous man in the division, because I win. I win a lot and I make people hate fighting. I take the fight out of them, because that’s what I do. I get in there and I get to work.”

Gane defeated Tuivasa via a third-round knockout after getting dropped in Round 2 of the fight. He finished Tuivasa with a vicious flurry of strikes, with at least one of the blows arguably illegal. Ciryl Gane brought Tai Tuivasa’s streak to an end in impressive fashion at UFC Paris. Ciryl Gane brought Tai Tuivasa’s streak to an end in impressive fashion at UFC Paris. Still, some people, including former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, believe the French star got away with a rather egregious illegal strike.
In the final minute of the third round, Gane landed a beautiful right that rocked Tai Tuivasa. Smelling blood in the water, Gane started to unload strikes. He landed three more shots, but the fourth one got the most attention. Gane delivered a vicious hammer fist to the back of Tuivasa’s head. As stated in the Unified Rules of MMA, strikes to the back of the head or neck are illegal. This prompted some fans to question why the fight wasn’t paused at that point, but fans were not the only ones calling out Gane for the “dirty” shot.
Former Ciryl Gane opponent, Junior dos Santos was quite upset with what Gane appeared to get away with and called out the fighter on Twitter.
“What a dirty fighter this Gane is,” dos Santos wrote on Twitter. “Again hitting the back of the head. And now what are those ‘fight experts’ will say about it?”
Ciryl Gane Was Accused of a Similarly Illegal Strike in 2020
At UFC 256, Junior dos Santos faced Ciryl Gane in what would be the final fight of his UFC career. On that night, Gane landed an elbow that suspiciously looked like a shot to the back of the head. The blow immediately dropped JDS and the referee immediately stepped in. Fans called out Ciryl Gane for what seemed like an obvious illegal strike, but nothing came of the backlash and Gane continued to climb the heavyweight ranks.
With that being the former heavyweight champion’s fourth straight loss, Junior dos Santos was handed his walking papers, something that he was understandably upset with after years of loyal service.
“I reacted with surprise, [and] I was a little bit impressed by the coldness of how they treated the case,” dos Santos told MMA Fighting. “I know it’s a business, [but] they just don’t care. The history we did in there and everything else, the dedication and how everything have always played out, was totally disregarded.”
JDS also revealed in the interview that the UFC didn’t even contact him directly to inform him of his release. He found out through Dan Lambert, the founder of American Top Team where ‘Cigano’ trains.
“The UFC didn’t even talk to me. For example, [UFC President] Dana White, I haven’t talked to him in years. Not to ask anything or know anything. They didn’t even talk to me. [UFC] texted Dan [Lambert] of American Top Team, and it got to me that their decision was to release me from my contract.”
