UFC Hall Of Famer BJ Penn made his return to fighting action last night (Sunday, January 15, 2016) when he took on No. 10-ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Phoenix, suffering a brutal second round knockout loss to ‘El Pantera’.

Rodriguez systematically picked apart ‘The Prodigy’ throughout the first six minutes of the contest, before landing a devastating hook that dropped the former lightweight and welterweight champ and eating a barrage of punches to end the night. Penn did not speak to any media following the loss, however, a few fellow fighters chimed in on the matter (via FOX Sports) during the FS1 post-fight show, stating that they believe it’s time for Penn to hang up the gloves.

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight title challenger Kenny Florian, who lost to Penn back in 2009 in their 155-pound title clash, believes the sport has finally caught up to ‘The Prodigy’ and doesn’t want to see Penn take another vicious beating like that again:

“Retire at this point. No one needs to see a legend like BJ Penn go out like that,” Florian said. “That was very hard to see, not to mention the last fight against Frankie Edgar was very hard to see. Now we’re it again with Yair Rodriguez. The sport has passed him by.

“This is an eventuality for every single fighter. It doesn’t matter, eventually, you don’t move the same way if you don’t keep up with the sport, you’re going to get beat down like this. This sport is way too hard. There’s other ways to make money and I hope BJ Penn finds some kind of peace in retiring finally.”

Previously Penn’s return was scheduled to take place against lesser-caliber competition, as he was at one point booked against Dennis Siver, followed by Cole Miller soon thereafter. Unfortunately neither of those bouts were able to hold up, eventually landing Penn standing across the Octagon from Rodriguez.

Current UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley isn’t too quick to tell Penn to walk away from the sport, but to perhaps ease back into things by picking his opponents more carefully:

“From the beginning this matchup was problematic,” Woodley said. “Maybe a Cole Miller or a matchup like that would have been a better interest fight back into the UFC.

“Coming in and fighting Yair Rodriguez, who has been on a complete tear might not have been the wisest choice by BJ Penn so I’m not going to completely say retire but he needs to consider his opponents in his next bout.”

Do you think Penn should fight again? If so, who should he throw-down with next?

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sunday, January 15, 2017) UFC Phoenix card, two of the 155-pound division’s finest went head-to-head as Joe Lauzon and Marcin Held engaged in Octagon war.

The first round proved to be quite an exciting one, as Lauzon dropped a plethora of elbows to Marcin’s skull during a takedown attempt; but a failed armbar attempt allowed Marcin to stand up once more. Marcin took Lauzon down and maintained side control for a moment, before Lauzon got up and dropped Marcin seconds before the round’s end.

Round two featured Held’s impressive wrestling ability on display while Lauzon yet again threatened with an armbar attempt that was later escaped.

The third and final round saw Held once again utilized his grappling to control the bout and dictate where the fight went, however, a split decision win was awarded to Lauzon. Following the bout Lauzon admitted he didn’t believe the judges got the result right, but nonetheless it will go down as a victory for the former Ultimate Fighter contestant.

Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn will make his return to fighting action tonight (Sunday, January 15, 2017) in the main event of UFC Phoenix, when he takes on No. 10-ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez.

Leading up to their contest Penn has been unleashing a slew of trash-talk towards his young Mexican foe, claiming that when the two take center Octagon he’ll make ‘El Pantera’ look like an amateur in there with him. During a recent interview with MMA Fighting Rodriguez got his opportunity to respond to ‘The Prodigy’, stating that his actions as of late have reflected rather immaturely on the UFC Hall Of Famer:

“He’s an expert, like he said. He’s pretty good at what he does and I respect him so much. The way that he talks isn’t going to change the way that I think about him,” Rodriguez said. “He said he’s a professional and he’s been in dozens of fights. He’s acting like an amateur.

“For me, I’m not mad at him. I actually respect him so much. I don’t know why he’s mad. I mean, man, I f*cking appreciate you. I respect you so much, I don’t know why you’re mad with me. I haven’t done nothing to you, but I respect you. But if you’re mad, man, what can I do? We’re going to fight anyways, so you’re going to punch me in the face. It’s what we do.”

Penn has also insinuated that Rodriguez and his manager conspired to fight Penn since their days training together at Jackson-Wink, claiming Rodriguez believes he can make his name off of the now 38-year-old Hawaiian:

“I never asked for this fight,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know who told him that, but it was some fight that the UFC offered me and I accepted, just like he did. I don’t know who created that lie, but I didn’t ask for this fight. But now I’m here fighting him, I’m fighting a legend and I’m pretty happy.”

UFC

Despite the ongoing war of words between the two sides, Rodriguez still holds a great deal of respect for his legendary adversary, having watched Penn compete while growing up in the streets of Mexico and researching some highlights from the former K1 champ’s heyday:

“I watched him growing up,” Rodriguez said. “I watched some of his highlight videos, I liked the way that he fought and his jiu-jitsu game. I didn’t know any jiu-jitsu when I started practicing MMA, so seeing him with amazing grappling just made me want to do it even more. I remember the first time that I saw him, it was watching videos on YouTube, he was jumping out of a pool doing some strength and conditioning stuff, and doing some boxing and some fighting stuff, and I wasn’t even fighting yet.

“It means a lot, “Rodriguez continued. “It means the UFC wants me to prove [myself] one more time with this kind of fight. B.J. Penn is a two-time former champion, two different weight classes. Few people can achieve that in their careers. B.J. Penn is one of those guys and he knows what it takes to be a champion. You want to fight those kind of guys. This is just going to be amazing for me because he has a lot of experience and I can absorb that too.”

Rodriguez and Penn will meet in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103, live on FS1 from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona tonight (Sunday, January 15, 2017).
