John Dodson Doubts Decision: Lineker Looked Like Frankenstein

Former two-time flyweight title challenger John “The Magician” Dodson attempted to establish himself as a legitimate threat to the 135-pound throne in the main event of last night’s (October 1, 2016) UFC Fight Night 96 from Portland, taking on No. 3-ranked John “Hands of Stone” Lineker.

The two men went to battle for 25 minutes in a closely-fought war, but it was Lineker who came out on top with a split-decision victory. Dodson, however, didn’t agree with the decision, and he believes the damage he dished out should’ve been enough to land him the nod:

“I still look handsome as hell,” Dodson told MMAjunkie. “He came out looking like Frankenstein, so I don’t know what’s up.”

“The Magician” event went as far as to compare the fight to UFC 195’s welterweight title fight between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit. The fight was an instant classic that many felt as if Condit had won, although the judges gave Lawler the decision:

“I did the whole Carlos Condit-Robbie Lawler thing, and sure enough, they gave it to Robbie Lawler again,” Dodson said.

Dodson did indeed appear to get the better of the striking advantages, however, Lineker’s forward pressure as opposed to Dodson’s counter punching may have led the judges to sway towards “Hands of Stone”.

“I was like, ‘What the hell are y’all thinking?’” Dodson said. “I didn’t know you could make someone miss so many times and still be on the losing end.”

How did you score the fight?

Will Brooks ‘Needs A Beer’ After Breaking Rib In Loss

Former Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks was looking to extend his perceived rise up the deep UFC 155-pound ranks when he met Alex Oliveira in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., October 1, 2016) UFC Fight Night 96 from Moda Center in Portland Oregon.

Instead, he suffered his first UFC loss to a fighter who missed weight by a lofty 5.5 pounds, succumbing to a brutal third-round TKO from the Brazilian “Cowboy” after breaking his rib in the first round. After the disappointing loss, Brooks discussed the injury on Twitter, noting that he couldn’t feel bad for himself and would be back:

He also released a photo of himself in the hospital, noting that he ‘needed a beer’ after the injury caused him to noticeably grimace on multiple occurrences during the later portions of the fight:

The rib appeared to be hurt when Brooks absorbed a brutal elbow from Oliveira in the first round, and it certainly played a big part into his subsequent decline and loss. However, there are many crying that he was hurt by an opponent in a fight, an obvious byproduct of the sport he was competing in.

Regardless, Brooks has his first UFC loss in only second fight, albeit to an opponent who was more of a welterweight than a lightweight at weigh-ins and fight time.

Brooks will definitely be back after he heals, yet his UFC career is off to a rocky start. Do you think he’ll be able to turn things around in the world’s toughest MMA promotion?

Portland, Oregon saw a solid card in the form of UFC Fight Night 96 last night. The event marked the second trip to Portland for the promotion, the first being way back in 2009 at UFC 102. The most memorable moments of UFC Portland came thick and fast. Curtis Blaydes scored a hematoma-inducing TKO over Cody East in the first finish of the night, then it was Nate Marquardt’s turn. The former middleweight title challenger scored a nasty knockout over Tamdan McCrory. ‘The Great’ wobbled ‘Barn Cat’ with a huge punch before flattening his foe with a clean head kick.

The main card was filled with upsets, as the first three bouts all went the way of the underdog. Although Alex Oliveira clearly had problems with his weight cut, he made no bones about finishing the favorite Will Brooks. The former Bellator lightweight champion may have claimed 20% of ‘Cowboy’s’ purse as the Brazilian came in six pounds overweight, but Oliveira claimed the TKO win. Then we come to the main event, an exciting five rounder between John Lineker and John Dodson.

Lineker vs. Dodson

Aside from having knockout power, both ‘The Magician’ and ‘Hands of Stone’ are blessed with granite beards. This lead to a five-round slugfest that was highly entertaining. According to the judges and most pundits watching, this was a tough one to score. If you ask Nick Diaz though, it was a no-brainer for Lineker. Diaz is not a fan of fighters who ‘run,’ as he puts it, and he saw Dodson’s movement in the cage as trying to avoid the fight. Memories of his bout with Carlos Condit, and Nate Diaz’s most recent fight with Conor McGregor are good examples of bouts which didn’t get Nick’s approval.

Here’s what he said about Lineker vs. Dodson:OL6QS9E[1]

Nick Diaz is Not Impressed

It’s good to see Nick Diaz active on Twitter after a period of absence. What do you make of his calling of Lineker vs. Dodson in Portland?

In the co-main event of UFC Portland earlier tonight (October 1, 2016), No. 11-ranked Will Brooks met Alex Oliveira in a matchup that could propel either men into the top ten of the UFC’s 155-pound rankings.

In the first round Oliveira showed that he could match the talented Brooks’ wrestling game, and even took Brooks down for a few seconds before ‘Ill’ Will returned to his feet.

The second round was very close, as each man landed their own sets of takedowns, and at two points Brooks found himself on Oliveira’s back and threatening the rear-naked choke.

In the third round Brooks showed the affects of a broken rib, grimacing in nearly every situation he initiated himself in with ‘Cowboy’. It all came to a screeching end when Oliveira landed some nasty ground-and-pound forcing referee Herb Dean to call it off.

Nobody shook hands after the bout, however, as Oliveira threw a crotch chop at Brooks’ way while he was tending to his rib. Brooks got up and threw his mouthpiece at Oliveira before returning to the mat in pain.

Will Brooks Calls Out Edson Barboza For UFC Portland

Former Bellator champion and No. 12-ranked UFC lightweight “Ill” Will Brooks recently made his successful Octagon debut, scoring a hard fought unanimous decision victory over battle tested veteran Ross Pearson at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 23 Finale earlier this month (July 8, 2016). After getting his first UFC victory under his belt, Brooks is now looking on to greater challengers.

Taking to his official Twitter account recently, the former 155-pound titleholder expressed interest in a potential bout with No. 6-ranked Edson Barboza. “Ill” Will also had a date and venue in mind:

The UFC recently announced that they will be returning to Portland, Oregon on October 1, 2016 with the event going down at the Moda Center.

Barboza just competed this past weekend, scoring a somewhat decisive decision victory over former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 20 (July 23, 2016) from Chicago, Illinois. Prior to that, Barboza had also toppled another former champion in Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. With his recent win streak, “Junior” may have his eyes set on higher ranked fighters, but a bout with Brooks could make sense.

In the aftermath of his bout with Melendez, Barboza expressed interest in landing a main event bout next time out. Barboza vs. Brooks could potentially provide a suitable headliner for a FOX Sports 1 card, and from a stylistic standpoint, these two explosive strikers match up quite well.
