UFC referee Herb Dean appears to have been filming a video for Cameo during the controversial finish of Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Stephanie Egger on Saturday night.

UFC Vegas 59 opened in a rather bizarre fashion with the women’s bantamweight bout. At the 1:17 mark, Silva appeared to have an arm bar locked in on Egger and then suddenly let the hold go. Silva argued that Egger had tapped out, but there was no indication of a tap and referee Chris Tognoni clearly did not see it. Despite this, Tognoni called a stop to the action, took Silva’s word for it, and immediately called for a review via instant replay. With the two fighters pressed up against the fence, there was no angle that clearly showed a tap by Egger leaving it to the cage side judges to decide.

Sitting cage side for the contest was tenured referee Herb Dean, but instead of watching the contest, Dean was busy filming a video for Cameo, a popular video-sharing site that allows celebrities to charge money for personalized messages to fans. As Dean speaks on camera, he pans to the Octagon where we can clearly see Silva and Egger in the middle of the evening’s opening contest.

This is Not the First Time UFC Referee Herb Dean Has Been Criticized While on the Job

Tenured UFC referee Herb Dean is regularly a topic of discussion amongst MMA fans. Over recent years, the UFC referee who made his promotional debut at UFC 47 almost 20 years ago, has been accused of being indecisive. Even UFC President Dana White commented on Dean’s indecisiveness following UFC Vegas 42’s co-main event between Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio de Lima. As Rothwell was dropped in the opening minute of the fight, Dean instinctively grabbed de Lima by the waist, signifying that he was stopping the fight, but then appeared to let Rothwell go for a takedown. Dean officially called for the stoppage only when de Lima threw his hands up in utter confusion as to what Dean was doing.

“Herb needs to stop touching guys unless the fight is over. He goes in and grabs them by the waist and then decides ‘Oops, maybe I’m..’. The good thing about this one was; that fight should have been stopped when he stopped it. You didn’t see Ben jumping up and arguing about it. He’s got to pull the trigger and stop touching guys. Don’t touch em unless you’re going to stop the fight… I like him personally, he’s a nice guy but he’s got to stop touching people until he’s ready to stop the fight.”

As for the debacle between Silva and Egger, it’s unclear if Dean has any influence on the decision. Michael Bisping can be heard saying Dean’s name, indicating the referee was involved in the conversation, but it was UFC referee Mark Smith who was working instant replay for the contest.

Aside from the fighters themselves, surely one of the most iconic figures in MMA’s history is ‘Big’ John McCarthy.

Involved in the sport since its inception, McCarthy has not only refereed an astronomical number of fights over more than two decades in the cage but has also had a major hand in helping shape the rules that provide the foundation for the sport today.

Throw in the fact that he also served for many years as a police officer in Los Angeles, and it’s clear that McCarthy has many stories to tell, and with the 55-year-old recently stepping aside from his refereeing duties to commentate for Bellator, now seems like a perfect time to recall some of the most memorable tales from his legendary figure.

Investigating O.J. Simpson For Alleged Domestic Violence

When ‘Big’ John McCarthy joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1988, he soon found himself at the door of a famous celebrity – O.J. Simpson.

Perhaps foreshadowing an infamously grisly incident still to come, the 24-year-old McCarthy had been called to Simpson’s house on Melrose Avenue to investigate a claim of domestic abuse by the former NFL star’s wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.

She alleged that Simpson had hit her during an argument, but there were no visible marks on the alleged victim and McCarthy had a hard time believing that one of his sporting heroes could be capable of such an act.

McCarthy warned the couple that they could both go to jail for their accusations, and they both decided to drop the matter.

At the time the young, naïve McCarthy believed he’d done the right thing, but six years later he watched on in horror as Simpson was arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife and another man.

”I know it wouldn’t have made a difference if we’d arrested him that day, but I never forgot how I’d been swayed into thinking Simpson was somehow better than the rest of us,” McCarthy admitted in his autobiography.

If you were watching UFC Fight Night 83, you may have noticed a number of concerning errors. UFC president Dana White did, and he wasn’t too amused…

UFC Fight Night 83 was for the most part a great card, with some riveting finishes and rousing battles in a number of divisions. The tale of the night came in the main event though, as two cowboys in Donald Cerrone and Alex Oliveira faced off. Cerrone was making his welterweight debut after a brutally unsuccessful lightweight title shot last December, and in his Brazilian counterpart he faced a late replacement that could have really rocked the boat with an upset.

As it was, the ‘Cowboy’ of old showed up, dragged Oliveira to the mat and sunk in a triangle choke from the mount. Just half way through round one and the bout was all over, and a jubilant Cerrone celebrated the rekindling of his winning ways. But it wasn’t all roses in the main event, at least not where the referee was concerned. The Brazilian appeared to tap almost right away when the choke hold sunk in and Cerrone rolled with his back to the mat, but it was some time before the referee reacted.

As the referee Mario Yamasaki moved to get a better view, Cerrone was pointing wildly to indicate Oliveira had tapped, at that point the ref intervened. Oliveira never went out, but it was a little concerning to see he’d tapped about ten times before being released. Check out what UFC president Dana White thought of the stoppage:

And it wasn’t his only blunder of the evening either, Mario Yamasaki had made a pretty rough job of the end of Cody Garbrandt’s fight too. As Augusto Mendes lay helpless on the mat from some punishment, the referee appeared to stop the fight, but then seemingly changed his mind. Garbrandt continued with his gruesome beatdown on Mendes, who was by this time out cold.

Here’s what ‘No Love’ said about the stoppage, via MMAFighting.com:

“He was definitely knocked out,” Garbrandt said in the post-fight press conference. “His eyes were rolling in the back of his head. He wasn’t even looking at me. So I threw my hands up, it was done. And Mario stepped in, so I was like, ‘OK, he didn’t touch me, so I’m gonna keep hitting him, finish the job.’ … He’s a dead man laying.

Thoughts?
