UFC on FOX 22 headliner Paige VanZant is pro-Cyborg…

Heading in to this weekend’s festivities in Sacramento, California, main event star Paige VanZant has gotten a lot of air time. Recently stating she’d fight anyone, including Ronda Rousey, ‘PVZ’ has once again been making headline news on a regular basis. Since joining the UFC in 2014, VanZant’s larger than life persona has scored her a large following, and UFC on FOX 22 will be the second event she’s headlined in two years.

’12 Gauge’ takes on Michelle Waterson in California tonight (Saturday Dec. 17, 2016), but even with such a task at hand, ‘PVZ’ is still up to her old antics. During the official weigh-ins show last night, VanZant and ‘Karate Hottie’ had an impromptu dance-off for the fans. Women’s MMA is growing steadily in the UFC, and with stars like VanZant constantly rising, the future is very bright indeed. That said, there are still some very big bumps in the road, something the 22-year old starlet is also aware of.

VanZant on Cyborg/125

Speaking with MMAJunkie.com after the UFC on FOX 22 open workouts, Paige VanZant delved in to the subject of Cris Cyborg. After reportedly turning down two title fights at 145 pounds because she only had eight weeks notice, Cyborg has been left out of the inaugural championship bout for the women’s featherweight strap. Obviously this led to more friction between Cyborg and UFC president Dana White, and ‘PVZ’ gives her take on the saga:

“I feel like if they were making a (145-pound women’s division), they should build it around Cris ‘Cyborg’ – she really deserves it. If they’re not going to build it around Cris, then I think they should open up the 125 division, because there’s a lot of us that really should go up.”

“We see a lot of girls that are missing weight at 115 because they can’t make that cut; it’s a huge cut for a lot of us,” she said. “I feel like I would go up to 125 if the division opened up. I don’t walk at 135 pounds, so I’d be way too small for 135. There’s a lot of us that would meet in that weight class; there’s a lot of very successful 125-ers that should come to the UFC. So, it seems like the UFC’s very strategic with their plans, and they probably know what they’re doing.”

More Women’s Divisions

Since the trouble between Cyborg and the UFC has started brewing again, interesting questions have resurfaced. It seems like just yesterday Dana White was saying there were no women for the featherweight category, forcing Cyborg to make an extremely dangerous weight cut twice in the space of five months. Now they are in such a rush they couldn’t give the Brazilian star 12 weeks notice to make the cut to 145 safely.

Could this have something to do with setting up a rematch between Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey? Perhaps the new owners are so keen on making more belts and more money, they are overlooking legitimacy, but that’s purely speculation, of course. Either way you look at it, Cyborg is getting snubbed once again, whether the promotion has intended to do so, or not.

Sage Northcutt: Mickey Gall Just Wants Attention

UFC Sacramento this weekend (Saturday December 17, 2016) will play host to an exciting 170-pound contest between two of the welterweight division’s finest prospects, when Mickey Gall and Sage Northcutt collide inside the Octagon.

Gall called for the match-up after his UFC 203 win over CM Punk in Cleveland this past September, expressing his desire to fight the ‘corny’ Northcutt. In addition to the trash talk leading up to the bout, mostly from Gall’s side, Gall has proposed a Hair vs. Hair stipulation the bout, in which the loser would be forced to shave their head.

Northcutt recently responded to this wager during an interview with FOX Sports, calling Gall’s proposal ‘funny’ and explaining it as nothing more than an attempt by Gall to get attention:

“That’s pretty funny. I think he’s actually just trying to get some attention,” Northcutt said. “Maybe he should go ahead and shave his head now to get some attention.”

While the young 20-year-old Northcutt has faced much scrutiny since joining the UFC at such a young age and continues to get called out by many fellow UFC fighters, he views the attention he’s getting as a compliment from his fellow combatants:

“I really take it as a compliment. If they’re calling me out that tells me something and that’s nice of them to be calling me out,” Northcutt said.

While Gall has impressed in his last two fights inside the UFC he’s done it against two fighters who have never fought a professional fight in their lives, something that makes it difficult for Northcutt to study tape on his adversary:

“The fight against CM Punk, he fought the CM Punk who came from the WWE and had no MMA fights. Same thing as before when he fought in the UFC, the person he fought (Mike Jackson) had never had an MMA fight. What I saw was, it was very hard to tell anything from the fights because he fought two guys who never had a fight before,” Northcutt said.

“I think everybody expected just what happened for CM Punk and Mickey Gall and CM Punk it takes a lot of guts for him or for anybody to step into the Octagon to fight.”

“I believe it would have been very similar to what happened between CM Punk and Mickey Gall,” Northcutt said about a hypothetical fight with Punk. “I think CM Punk is going to be getting better and better and I hear he’s going to be looking for a fight soon.”

While Gall has secured his first two wins in mixed martial arts (MMA) via submission, Northcutt is not hesitant to take to fight to the ground this weekend:

“I do not think that’s true. I believe he’s going to be shooting for the shot to try and take me down. I have great wrestling as well so I might just take him down and ground and pound him,” Northcutt said.

“I’ve had four knockouts and three submissions out of eight fights. I know I have great grappling myself and I know how I do with submissions. The great thing is it’s mixed martial arts. So I’m prepared and I’m ready to go out there and get the victory.”

While we have yet to see exactly what Gall brings to the table in the stand-up game, Northcutt has shown to be extremely explosive given his extensive karate background, however, Gall is an extremely talented jiu-jitsu brown belt and Nothcutt has shown some struggles in the submission game. The match-up is an interesting one to say the least, and to see these two young men’s careers continue on for years to come should be a treat as well.

Gall and Northcutt will meet on the main card of UFC on FOX 23 from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California tomorrow (Saturday December 17, 2016).

The UFC may have found themselves a new star in the form of welterweight Mickey Gall, who took out former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star CM Punk in his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut at UFC 203 in September.

Gall, a 24-year-old Brazilian jiu jitsu brown belt fighting out of Green Brook, New Jersey, recently joined Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour (courtesy of MMA Fighting) to discuss his upcoming match-up with Sage Northcutt at this weekend’s UFC on FOX 22 event.

During the appearance Gall was asked how he thought Punk will fare in a second go-around inside the Octagon if the UFC allows him to compete under their banner once again:

“I think he’ll be dealt (with) the same way I dealt him,” Gall said. “If he fights a UFC caliber guy, I think they’ll do it in the same way. So I think in hindsight, he probably should’ve taken some regional fights, amateur fighters, smaller shows. But I think that’s ballsy of him to want to come back.”

Although Gall admits Punk’s name from the massive pro wrestling world will certainly bring new eyes to the sport, he also believes that allowing such an inexperienced fighter to compete in the sport’s ultimate proving ground ‘waters down’ the sport a bit:

“I don’t know. I mean, he’s definitely going to help your pay-per-view and he brings that other audience,” Gall said. “But for kinda the legitimacy of the sport, I think it may water it down a little bit.”

Gall got his crack at the UFC by calling out CM Punk during an episode of UFC President Dana White’s Lookin For A Fight, a bout White granted him after a win over Mike Jackson at UFC Fight Night 82 in February. Now that Gall has moved on from the CM Punk saga and is on his way to bigger and brighter things, he looks to propel himself even further into stardom in the MMA world with a win over fellow top prospect Sage Northcutt.

Gall and Northcutt will meet at UFC on FOX 22 from the Golden 1 Arena in Sacramento, California on Saturday night (December 17, 2016).

PVZ: I’ll Fight Ronda Rousey On One Condition

No. 8-ranked UFC strawweight Paige VanZant will headline her second ever UFC event this Saturday night (December 17, 2016), when she takes on No. 12-ranked ‘The Karate Hottie’ Michelle Waterson from Sacramento.

Despite having quite the challenge ahead of her in the form of the 30-year-old finisher Waterson, ‘PVZ’ could be thinking about one day stepping into the Octagon against one of the greatest female mixed martial artists (MMA) to have ever fought, Ronda Rousey. During a recent interview with TMZ (courtesy of Bloody Elbow), VanZant stated she’s open to throwing down with ‘The Rowdy One’, if the bout is at a catchweight of 125 pounds:

“If she wants to meet at 125, (I’d fight her),” VanZant said. “I’d have to go up (from strawweight). I would consider going up to 125. It’s not that big of a weight gain for me. We’ll see if we meet at 125.”

Rousey will be making her Octagon return against current 135-pound women’s champion Amanda Nunes, after Rousey suffered the first defeat of her professional MMA career just over a year ago. VanZant predicts that the former Olympic judoka will get the job done against the Brazilian in her return, utilizing her signature armbar to recapture the bantamweight crown:

“I don’t believe in ring rust – I believe it’s 100 percent mental,” VanZant said. “So if she’s 100 percent mentally focused on that night, then she’s going to win it. I would say Ronda by armbar.”

Before she can think about a flyweight contest with Rousey, Van Zant must first get through Waterson who is coming off of an impressive third round submission victory over Angela Magana in July. In a think strawweight division currently ran by Polish knockout artist Joanna Jedrzejczyk, this bout could have serious title picture implications in the near future.

VanZant and Waterson will meet in the main event of UFC on FOX 22 live from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California this Saturday (December 17, 2016).
