Before he steps into the squared circle, Rockhold was backstage at UFC San Antonio to support friend Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera as he stepped into the main event for a high-stakes matchup with fellow-top bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen.

In a video clip shared on Luke Rockhold’s Instagram, the outspoken scrapper can be seen tangling up with San Antonio Spurs icon Tim Duncan in a friendly exchange behind the scenes.

Recently minted number-one ranked UFC bantamweight contender, Merab Dvalishvili was in attendance at UFC Fight Night San Antonio last weekend – watching on as fellow contenders, Marlon Vera, and Cory Sandhagen headlined – before jumping into the attending audience to confont a fan who was trash-talking him at the end of the card.

Dvalishvili, who most recently took main event honors himself at UFC Fight Night Las Vegas earlier this month, leapfrogged Montana native, Sean O’Malley into the number one rank at 135lbs – courtesy of a dominant unanimous decision victory over former undisputed bantamweight champion, Petr Yan.

Expected to lay in wait to see the outcome of May’s undisputed bantamweight title fight between training partner, Aljamain Sterling, and the returning former duel-weight champion, Henry Cejudo – Merab Dvalishvili admitted that he would not fight his teammate, Sterling if offered the opportunity by the organization.

Taking umbrage with Dvalishvili’s stance on his next fight, UFC president, Dana White claimed that it would be massive mistake for the Tbilisi to deny the chance to fight Sterling for Octagon gold in the future.

“That’s a personal decision he (Merab Dvalishvili) needs to make,” Dana White said. “If that’s what he wants to do, I can tell you how that story ends. It’s not a good ending to that story. But, he’s a big boy, he can figure that out on his own.”

“You can still be friends and want what your friend has,” Dana White explained. “It would be a really bad idea for Merab to go down that path [avoiding Aljamain Sterling].”

Reaching boiling point over the weekend in Texas, Dvalishvili attempted to scale his way into the bleachers at the AT&T Center after a fan – shouting expletives in his direction.

“Motherf*cker, I will f*ck your face,” Merab Dvlishvili shouted at the fan filming who trashed talked him for refusing to fight Uniondale native and teammate, Aljamain Sterling for the UFC bantamweight title.

Following the conclusion of the main event, Dvalishvili was the subject of a call out from the surging, Cory Sandhagen – who snapped the streak of the #3 ranked, Marlon Vera with an impressive, one-sided split decision victory in the ‘Lone Star State’.

Marlon Vera calls out Petr Yan for UFC fight it's about time

Off the back of his winning streak-snapping loss to the surging, Cory Sandhagen at UFC San Antonio over the weekend, Marlon Vera has offered to make his Octagon return against former undisputed bantamweight best, Petr Yan.

Vera, who entered Saturday’s headliner with the aforenoted, Sandhagen as the current #3 ranked bantamweight contender, saw his impressive winning spree halted in a split decision loss.

Prior to his judging defeat to Sandhagen in Texas, Ecuador native, Marlon Vera had stopped former two-time bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz with a blistering fourth round high kick KO in August of last year in the main event slot of UFC San Diego.

Marlon Vera calls out bantamweight rival, Petr Yan next

Forced back to the drawing board following his rather one-sided decision loss to Sandhagen, Vera has called for a fight with Dudinka native, Yan next – with the duo on a definite collision course for the last 18 months.

“(Petr) Yan it’s about time,” Marlon Vera tweeted

Most recently himself headlining UFC Las Vegas earlier this month, Dudinka striker, Yan suffered a dominant decision loss to Georgian wrestling ace, Merab Dvalishvili.

The defeat came as his third consecutively, following a title unification loss to Aljamain Sterling in the pair’s rematch, before a close, debated decision defeat to Sean O’Malley on ‘Fight Island’ in October of last year.

Himself calling his shot following an impressive victory over Vera, Sandhagen, a former interim bantamweight title challenger offered to meet with the #1 rated, Dvalishvili in a title-eliminator at bantamweight.

Seeing his impressive run if four consecutive victories halted by Sandhagen, Vera had taken a decision win over both Davey Grant and Rob Font – in between vicious high kick knockouts of former lightweight best, Frankie Edgar, and the abovenoted, Cruz back in August of last year.

Himself earning undisputed Octagon gold in 2020 in Abu Dhabi, UAE – Yan bested common-opponent, Jose Aldo with a fifth round TKO courtesy of ground strikes.

Alex Perez confirms seizure forced him from UFC San Antonio

Former UFC flyweight title challenger, Alex Perez has confirmed how a seizure suffered backstage during his warm-up ahead of a fight with Manel Kape at UFC San Antonio last night, resulted in his removal from the Texas card.

Perez, who has been sidelined since July of last year where he suffered a decision loss to Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 277, had previously challenged for undisputed flyweight gold against former champion, Deiveson Figueiredo.

Headlining UFC 255 in November 2020 against the Brazilian on short-notice, Perez, the current #6 ranked flyweight contender, suffered a first round submission loss, with Figueiredo latching onto a guillotine choke inside just two minutes of the first frame.

Seeing a slew of fights against the likes of Brandon Moreno, Aksar Askarov, Matt Schnell, and Kai Kara-France shelved in recent years, Perez was forced from last night’s main card fight against former Rizin FF champion, Kape due to health issues.

Posting an official statement on his Instagram account, Perez, a staple under Colin Oyama in California, confirmed he had suffered a seizure backstage during his warm-up routine for his main card fight with Kape.

“First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for all the support and concerns,” Alex Perez posted. “I was doing my pre-fight warm up and had a seizure. I immediately received medical attention. My hydration, eletrolytes, etc were all more than adequate.”

“This has nothing to do with weight cut,” Alex Perez continued. “It was one of the easiest cuts of my career. I will be undergoing further testing in the upcoming weeks to determine the cause. I would appreciate privacy. My apologizes to my opponent and fans. Thank you to the UFC medical team for their help and support.”

In his most recent Octagon victory, Perez managed to defeat Jussier Formiga with a first round TKO courtesy of leg kicks at UFC 250 in June 2020.

Off the back of his impressive victory over the surging Marlon Vera atop last night’s UFC San Antonio card in the ‘Lone Star State’ – Cory Sandhagen has called for a bantamweight title-eliminator against the #1 ranked, Merab Dvalishvili next.

Headlining his second consecutive Fight Night billed card, Sandhagen, who most recently secured an impressive TKO win over Song Yadong back in September of last year, turned in another impressive performance in Texas this weekend.

Displaying his often overlooked grappling and wrestling chops, Colorado native, Cory Sandhagen battled to a rather one-sided, split decision (47-48, 50-45, 49-46) over the #3 ranked challenger, Vera.

Scoring his second successive victory with his judging win over Chone favorite, Vera, Sandhagen – who has suffered a submission loss to current bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, offered to fight the Uniondale native’s teammate, Dvalishvili next.

“Merab (Dvalishvili), you’re hungry? Well I’ve got something for you to eat,” Cory Sandhagen said during his post-fight Octagon interview. “And it don’t taste good.”

Welcoming the potential number one contender decider clash, Dvalishvili replied to Sandhagen’s call on Instagram – writing, “The Machine says let’s go.”

In the midst of his own lenghty winning run under the promotion’s banner, Tbilisi native, Dvalishvili most recently took out common-foe, former undisputed bantamweight titleholder, Petr Yan in a clear-cut decision win at UFC Las Vegas earlier this month

Throughout his Octagon tenure, Sandhagen, who has only suffered losses against former champions, Sterling, Yan, and a close decision loss to T.J. Dillashaw, clutches the #5 ranked at the time of publication.

During his UFC stint, the Elevation Fight Team mainstay has defeated the likes of John Lineker, Raphael Assuncao, Marlon Moraes, and former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar.

As for champion, Sterling, the undisputed gold holder headlines UFC 288 in May – attempting his third title defense against the returning former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo.

On Saturday night, Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen stepped into the main event spotlight for a high-stakes bantamweight showdown at The AT&T Center.

Going into the bout riding a four-fight win streak, ‘Chito’ Vera finds himself on the cusp of a UFC bantamweight title opportunity. Hoping to stop Vera’s momentum was Sanghagen, a division staple who has gone 3-2 in his last five with wins over Marlon Moraes, Frankie Edgar, and Song Yadong. ‘The Sandman’ could add his name to a very short list of potential title contenders with a win over the No. 3 ranked Marlon Vera.

As expected, Cory Sandhagen was the aggressor early as Vera is a notoriously slow starter inside the Octagon. Sandhagen put his calf kicks to work early, but picked up the pace nearly the halfway point of the first, moving in for a takedown. Sandhagen works Vera to the canvas and immediately begins firing away with heavy shots and slicing elbows through the end of the round. Sandhagen’s aggressiveness continued in the second with him pushing the pace and taking things to the ground a minute into the round. Vera was able to get back to his feet with 80 seconds left in the round but offered little offense after 10 minutes.

Marlon Vera picked up the pace in the third, mixing up his kicks and punches in an attempt to make the fight much more competitive. However, Sandhagen was still clearly in control, mixing up his strikes with the occasional takedown attempt. As a result, Vera was unable to truly get his offense going through the third and fourth rounds. In the final five minutes, Sandhagen relied heavily on his wrestling early, tying up and taking down Vera. ‘Chito’ fought his way back up, but was still unable to land anything dangerous. With 10 seconds left, Vera finally kicked it into high gear, but by then it was too little too late.

Official Result: Cory Sandhagen def. Marlon Vera via split decision (47-48, 50-45, 49-46)
