Based on Jeremy Stephens’ extensive track record inside the cage and Dooho Choi’s last fight, a “Fight of the Night”-winning war with Cub Swanson, the main event of tonight’s (Sun. January 14, 2017) UFC Fight Night 124 from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, promised to be an explosive affair full of fireworks.

And after a somewhat lackluster main card in Missouri, the main event delivered just that.

The back-and-forth first round saw both fighters find success with low kicks as they both landed some good shots in a close round that Stephens may have edged on forward pressure and activity on a more patient Choi. But the proverbial gloves came off in the second frame, with both men swinging wildly and landing huge strikes:

It was just the style of fight Stephens loves, and he capitalized by pushing the pace on Choi and rocking him with a huge right hook that dropped him right before he followed up with some hellacious elbows on the ground to finish it:

Here’s another look at the shot that became the beginning of the end for “The Korean Superboy”:

He also added a monstrous right on the ground as part of the fight-ending sequence:

Two-time UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was welcomed back to the promotion during an emotional tribute earlier tonight (Sun. January 14, 2018) at UFC St. Louis.

The 43-year-old was driving his truck last June near his hometown of Hillsboro, Illinois when he was hit by an oncoming train. The train hit the driver’s side of the vehicle and Hughes was airlifted to the HSHS St. John’s Hospital to be treated.  Somehow Hughes was in stable condition just days after the crash and had suffered no broken bones or any other internal injuries.

Despite the lack of serious physical injuries Hughes was minimally responsive for quite some time, before being able to play around on the ground with friends mimicking jiu-jitsu two months later in August. Today Hughes is back up and walking around, and was even able to walk down Octagon side and sit with UFC President Dana White to enjoy the main card of UFC St. Louis.

The UFC played a great video package paying tribute to Hughes, before he was welcomed out to the arena with a huge pop from the crowd. Check it out here:

Hours after the MMA world was hit with the unfortunate news that middleweight champion Robert Whittaker was forced out of his main event bout with Luke Rockhold, another high-profile bout was scrapped when news broke Uriah Hall had been forced out of his co-main event bout against Vitor Belfort at tomorrow’s UFC St. Louis.

The bout was to be MMA legend Belfort’s retirement fight and understandably elicited an emotional response from the former UFC champion where he wished Hall a fast recovery. It was unknown just what caused the veteran striking specialist to not show up for weigh-ins, but details soon emerged clarifying a harrowing scene before “Primetime” stepped on the scale.

Ariel Helwani tweeted that Hall reportedly fainted on his way to weighing in even though he was on weight. That would obviously be scary enough, but the belief was that he also suffered a seizure as well:

It’s a highly concerning set of circumstances for the veteran middleweight, one that will certainly – and justifiably – further the controversy over extreme weight-cutting practices in the UFC and MMA as a whole.

“The Phenom” will need a new foe for his retirement bout, but more importantly, Hall’s health will need to be cleared before he can return to the octagon.

Is it time for the UFC to do something about all the bout cancellations due to weight cutting? Is there really anything they can do?
