Dana White confirms plan to phase out UFC Apex facility event we're getting it done

After a thrilling UFC fight night in St. Louis, Dana White is teeming about potentially getting back to the UFC’s pre-pandemic ways of traveling the globe for (nearly) every card.

The night of fights at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis was truly electric. The fights featured many hometown heroes, and the crowd was deafening as it seemingly roared all night long. Many said the atmosphere was as captivating as those in the crowds of PPV events, and it also helped that the fights themselves did not disappoint.

Dana White

Derrick Lewis returned to his winning ways and ended the night strong by knocking out Rodrigo Nascimento early into the third round. The co-main featured Joaquin Buckley victorious in fighting Nursulton Ruziboev in front of a hometown crowd, and both fans and fighters brought the intensity. It was a great night of fights, and it’s got UFC president Dana White very excited about the prospect of getting the UFC back on the road.

Of course, the UFC Apex is the organization’s private arena of sorts. It has served the UFC well but has grown stale in the face of critics. The UFC Apex doesn’t really feature much of a crowd, and despite the amount of money it can save the company, it is often labeled as boring compared to legitimate arenas.

Dana White wants to move away from the UFC Apex and take the UFC Around the globe

The atmosphere at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis was definitely anything but boring, and it also was very profitable. According to Dana White, the fight night in St. Louis was the highest gate ever for a UFC Fight Night, generating $2.47 million with almost 16 thousand fans present.

“Even if you’re watching on ESPN, I mean, everybody — I’m sure you guys were getting text too. They’re like, ‘Jesus Christ. It’s like a pay-per-view there right now.’” Dana White said at the post-fight press conference.

“And this is,” he continued. “When you think about how we built this business, it was taking it out of the big markets. When we first got into the fight business, everybody just went to Vegas, Atlantic City, sometimes New York, sometimes LA. That’s the only place that really had fights unless you had a local kid.”

“We built this business, taking this thing to every city all over the world,” Dana White said proudly. “And as we start to get our s— together, I will call it, and start to move out and start to go to these different cities like we used to, the whole sport just goes to another level.”

When asked if this meant the UFC Apex would no longer be the main host of UFC events, White replied in the affirmative. “It’s what I’ve been saying for a long time,” he said. We gotta get out of the Apex and start doing more events in all these different cities, and we’re starting to do it. We’re getting it done this year.”

Grasso has so far enjoyed an undefeated three-fight streak since her 2020 move to flyweight, while Araujo, a former Pancrase titleholder has struggled to find continued form in the Octagon, most recently defeating Andrea Lee.

An intriguing flyweight fight between division contenders, Askar Askarov, and Brandon Royval is also on deck for the ‘Sin City’ card – while veteran Cub Swanson makes a bantamweight move against Johnathan Martinez.

UFC Vegas 63 – Kattar vs. Allen

Another high-profile, potential title-eliminator at the featherweight limit is booked for the promotion’s October 29. ‘Fight Night’ event – as division strikers, Calvin Kattar, and Arnold Allen share the Octagon.

Set for his third outing of the year, Kattar is attempting to rebound from a loss to Josh Emmett, while the surging Ipswitch native, Allen has enjoyed a promotional perfect run, most recently stopping Dan Hooker with strikes in London. UFC betting UK offers the opportunity to flutter on an impressive and anticipated battle between slick punchers, Kattar, and Allen.

UFC Vegas 64 – Mitchell vs. Evloev

A grappler’s delight is slated currently for November 5. at the UFC Apex facility – as undefeated featherweight forces, Bryce Mitchell and Movsar Evloev land in the Octagon.

Out of action since a career-best unanimous decision win over Brazilian kicking veteran, Edson Barboza, Mitchell currently boasts an unbeaten 15-0 record, while Evloev is fresh from a judging win over Dan Ige in June – moving him to 16-0. A strawweight fight between Marina Rodriguez, and Amanda Lemos is also slated for the UFC Apex card.

UFC Vegas 65 – Lewis vs. Spivak

Heavyweight division contenders, Derrick Lewis, and Sergey Spivak are set to headline UFC Vegas 65 on November 19. – as the fan-favorite promotional standout knockout artist looks to prevent a third consecutive loss against the impressive, Spivak.

UFC Orlando – Thompson vs. Holland

After a brief two-week retirement, fan-favorite striker, Kevin Holland has booked himself his third Octagon main event in the form of a UFC Fight Night Orlando clash against two-time title challenger, Stephen Thompson.

Simpsonville striker, Thompson has been sidelined since December of last year, where he dropped a unanimous decision loss against Belal Muhammad, while Holland suffered a one-sided D’Arce choke defeat against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 just last month.

UFC Vegas 66 – Cannonier vs. Strickland

A middleweight rescheduling – initially scheduled for next weekend in ‘Sin City’ between one-time title challenger, Jared Cannonier, and Sean Strickland will take placeholder as the final fight of the year on December 17.

Cannonier has been out of action since July where he suffered a forgettable unanimous decision defeat to middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, while Strickland dropped a thunderous first round KO loss to Alex Pereira on the same International Fight Week main card.

Kelvin Gastelum

A rescheduled middleweight matchup between the #11 ranked former interim title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum, and the streaking MMA Factory staple, the #12 rated challenger, Nassourdine Imavov is slated to take main event honors at UFC Vegas 67 on January 14. next from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gastelum and Imavov were initially scheduled to fight at UFC 273 back in April of this year, however, VISA issues ruled the latter from the fight and the bout was cancelled. Imavov was then replaced by Dricus Du Plessis, however, Gastelum was then removed from the fight after suffering an undisclosed injury.

Kelvin Gastelum books his third straight UFC headliner

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid in consecutive main event outings, Kelvin Gastelum, a nine-year UFC veteran, most recently dropped a unanimous decision loss to recent title challenger, Jared Cannonier back in August.

As for Imavov, the Fernand Lopez trainee featured at UFC Paris back at the beginning of this month, turning in consecutive victory number three with an impressive unanimous judging win over Joaquin Buckley at the Accor Arena in the French capital. French outlet, La Sueur was first to announce Gastelum’s main event rebooking against Imavov.

Suffering defeats in five of his last six professional appearances, Kelvin Gastelum’s sole success in that period came in the form of a unanimous decision win over promotional veteran, Ian Heinisch at UFC 258 back in February of last year.

Competing for the interim middleweight crown back in 2019 against current champion, Israel Adesanya, Gastelum pushed the City Kickboxing staple the distance before suffering an eventual decision loss.

The Ulitmate Fighter 17 victor has landed notable Octagon wins over the likes of Uriah Hall, Rick Story, Jake Ellenberger, Nate Marquardt, Johny Hendricks, Tim Kennedy, as well as former middleweight champion, Michael Bisping, and Ronaldo Souza.

12-3 as a professional, Dagestan-born talent, Imavov added the aforenoted, Buckey to a string of prior stoppage triumphs over both Edmen Shahbazyan, and common-foe, Heinisch last year.

In his sole promotional blemish, Imavov suffered a majority decision loss to Phil Hawes in February of last year. Landing five knockout wins to go with four further submission finishes, Imavov landed in the UFC with a decision success against Jordan Williams.

Last night, footage from a recent podcast appearance featuring UFC president, Dana White at the promotion’s headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada drew mass attention, with eagle-eyed viewers spotting an apparent leak of potential fights scheduled to take place this summer.

A series of UFC fights appeared to have been leaked during a recent podcast featuring Dana White

White, who appeared on The Pivot Podcast with Ryan Clark, made his way through his office for the podcast appearance, with a board behind him stacked with upcoming cards hosted by the promotion – including UFC 276 and UFC 277 this summer, and UFC London – with fights for those events yet to be officially announced.

Amongst those potentially leaked events for UFC 276, including an expected middleweight headliner between champion, Israel Adesanya, and the #2 ranked contender, Jared Cannonier on July 2.

In a rather surprising co-main event bout per the leaked board; a welterweight matchup between the #3 ranked contender, Khamzat Chimaev, and Stockton veteran, Nate Diaz – in a bout which has garnered its fair share of attention across social media.

As reported earlier today, a bantamweight main card opener between Brazilian contender, Pedro Munhoz, and the surging division finisher, Sean O’Malley was also placed on the board for UFC 276 – with that bout also confirmed and reported.

At UFC 277 on July 30. – the board is topped by a supposed leaked heavyweight title fight between former light heavyweight best, Jon Jones, and former two-time heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic. While it was previously reported that the promotion were targeting the bout for a July card, Jones recently claimed that he would wait until September for Miocic to return to the Octagon

Another high-profile leaked bout which has also since been reported by outlets is a light heavyweight matchup between Dagestan contender, Magomed Ankalaev, and one-time division title challenger, Anthony Smith.

For the promotion’s June return to London, England – the board also features a lightweight matchup between Paddy Pimblett, and Moroccan striker, Ottman Azaitar. A light heavyweight matchup between Nikita Krylov and Alexander Gustafsson is also featured on the board, as was previously reported.

For a July 9. UFC Fight Night event, it also appears a light heavyweight headliner between one-time division title challenger, Thiago Santos, and the surging striker, Jamahal Hill also appears to have been leaked during White’s podcast appearance.

Magomed Ankalaev

Streaking light heavyweight contender, Magomed Ankalaev continues his run through the ranks with a rather tentative and composed unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-46) victory over one-time title challenger, Thiago Santos to round out a hugely entertaining UFC Vegas 50 card.

Scoring his seventh consecutive victory and arguably the most high-profile win of his Octagon tenure to date, Ankalaev managed to outland Santos on the feet beyond a brief late second round knockdown, as well as impose his wrestling against the Brazilian to set up a eventual dominant decision victory.

Adding Santos to an impressive résumé of wins recently, Ankalaev, who entered the bout as the #6 ranked contender in the official light heavyweight pile — will likely leapfrog the Brazilian striker and land within the division’s top-5 off the back of his judging success.

Below, catch the highlights from Magomed Ankalaev’s unanimous decision win over Thiago Santos
