Johnny Walker is only targeting the top of the light heavyweight division now.
Walker returned to the win column following a first-round knockout win over Ryan Spann on the UFC Vegas 11 main card. Despite facing adversity early on in what was a back-and-forth fight, the Brazilian was able to earn the knockout after some devastating elbows on Spann.
As a result, Walker ended a two-fight losing streak that saw him suffer setbacks against Corey Anderson and Nikita Krylov. His goal now? Climb up the division by facing fighters ranked above him.
Former title challenger Anthony Smith is one fighter he particularly earmarked as a potential opponent.
“Maybe Anthony Smith, or anyone who is above me in the ranking,” Walker said in the UFC Vegas 11 post-fight press conference (via BJ Penn). “I don’t like to fight with a Brazilian, but if I have to fight, we fight.”
Smith is not enjoying the best of times recently.
He suffered a gruesome TKO defeat to Glover Teixeira in May and was most recently outpointed by Aleksandar Rakic last month that saw him enter a two-fight losing streak.
Despite his setbacks, he is still ranked No. 8 in the light heavyweight rankings and it’s no surprise to see why No. 11-ranked Walker is interested in facing him next.

Chimaev took on Gerald Meerschaert on the main card of UFC Vegas 11 on Saturday night in what was his third fight in just two months since debuting for the promotion.
There was a lot of intrigue in this particular fight as Meerschaert was a submission specialist and a clear step up from Chimaev’s previous opponents.
In the end, it didn’t matter as “The Wolf” needed just 17 seconds to deliver a statement first-round knockout that went viral. Unlike his previous two fights, which were maulings on the ground, Chimaev showed he could strike and had legitimate knockout power too.
The main goal? To show that he is his own fighter and not just another version of Nurmagomedov.
“Yeah because everybody say, ‘You are Khabib, Khabib No. 2,’ something like that – but I am Khamzat,” Chimaev said at the UFC Vegas 11 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “I can knock out people. Smash the people. Everything. I have everything.”
It certainly makes Chimaev an even more dangerous foe for future opponents as he plans on becoming a two-division champion in the future. Given how he’s going, it wouldn’t be a surprise at this rate.
Tyron Woodley isn’t retiring just yet. Woodley suffered a fifth-round TKO defeat to Colby Covington after injuring his rib during their UFC Vegas 11 headliner this past weekend. It put him at three defeats in a row — a first in his professional mixed martial arts career — with UFC president Dana White later urging […]
It put him at three defeats in a row — a first in his professional mixed martial arts career — with UFC president Dana White later urging him to consider retiring.
But that’s not what the former welterweight champion plans on doing. In fact, he isn’t even going to consider changing up his coaching team, let alone call time on his career.
“I’m not retiring – I’m not giving it up,” Woodley said on Instagram Live on Monday (via MMA Fighting). “I’m not switching all my coaches up. I’m not changing the continent I live on. I’m not doing all that.
“Some sh*t didn’t happen and guess what? I don’t know why it didn’t happen. I did everything to make it happen. Now we just take a deep breath and see what’s next.”
Woodley is still a top-level fighter but given his recent setbacks and the fact that he turned 38 earlier this year, it seems more apparent now than ever that his prime has clearly passed him.
“The Chosen One” lost his welterweight title in March last year following a unanimous decision defeat to Kamaru Usman. He returned to action in May this year only to get outpointed by Gilbert Burns.
It remains to be seen what’s next for Woodley after his most recent setback against Covington.
