If you know Max Holloway, then you know the Blessed Express waits for no man.

The former featherweight champ lost two extremely close bouts with Alexander Volkanovski, yet was still considered to be next for the title after rebounding with a career defining performance against Calvin Kattar. Instead, Holloway is set to take on a returning Yair Rodriguez this weekend, in the UFC Vegas 42.

Speaking on The MMA Hour, Holloway explained why he decided to take this fight, rather than wait for the title shot like some other people. He says that he was willing to take on anyone the UFC put in front of him, because he is not trying to wait in line for a title shot.

“My reaction was everybody, every time, everywhere. The UFC, they don’t have this tournament structure. So a lot of these guys, they’re just waiting at the elevator. They’re waiting at the elevator to go to the top. I’m not an elevator waiter, there’s no line at the stairs. So that’s where you can find me, at the stairs. This is not new for us at all. For me and my team, it’s very important to not be elevator divas, you know? I want to just get out there and keep doing the damn thing.” Holloway said.

“Everybody else can figure out, you guys can choose who the elevator divas is in this sport, but you know your boy be at the stage, and we be running up and down those bad boys.”

That said, Max Holloway was clearly the next in line, had he decided to wait for the winner of Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega. He said that the UFC even told him that he could just wait for that fight, but he wanted to get another bout in before the end of the year.

“I didn’t want to wait ’til New Year. I wanted to keep on fighting. Everywhere, everyone, at anytime. Let’s get it. The UFC told us, they told us we didn’t have to, they told us we could wait it out. But I was like, ‘I ain’t about that, I ain’t about that.’ I talked to my team, I let my team know, and they were all on board, and here we are today.”

With a win over Yair Rodriguez this weekend, it is hard to imagine any other option besides Max Holloway fighting for the title next. That said, he has a tough test ahead of him, and he is well aware of it.

Ovince Saint Preux

UFC Vegas 42 has taken a hit as Ovince Saint Preux will no longer be competing.

The former light heavyweight title challenger was set to take on Philipe Lins in a 205-pound matchup on the main card taking place next Saturday night.

However, that will no longer be the case after “OSP” had to pull out as per MMA Junkie. The promotion would announce the news on the UFC 268 post-fight show as well.

It is currently unclear if Lins will remain on the card and fight a short-notice replacement.

Saint Preux Will Wait To Snap Losing Streak

Saint Preux is currently on a two-fight losing streak following back-to-back knockout defeats to Jamahal Hill and Tanner Boser. In total, he has lost three of his last four outings. He will have to wait before he can hope to return to the win column.

Lins, meanwhile, is also looking to snap a two-fight losing streak as well as earn his first UFC win. He also suffered a knockout defeat to Boser after getting outpointed by Andrei Arlovski in his UFC debut last year.

UFC Vegas 42 is headlined by a featherweight bout between former champion Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez.

Here’s how the UFC Vegas 42 card currently looks:

  • Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodriguez
  • Marcos Rogerio de Lima vs. Ben Rothwell
  • Leah Letson vs. Felicia Spencer
  • Philipe Lins vs. TBA
  • Kyle Daukaus vs. Roman Dolidze
  • Julio Arce vs. Song Yadong

The UFC wasted no time in re-booking Kevin Holland vs. Kyle Daukaus, just days after their controversial no-contest finish at UFC Vegas 38. As first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Holland and Daukaus will look to settle the score at UFC Vegas 42 on Nov. 13.

The highly-anticipated Holland vs. Daukaus fight came to a grinding halt after the two clashed heads just minutes into the fight, but the fight wasn’t officially ruled a no-contest until Daukaus sunk in a fight-ending submission. Holland took the worst of the head-clash but managed to somehow recover and work back up to his feet.

After referee Dan Miragliotta took a few minutes to speak with Herb Dean about the situation, the fight was ruled a no-contest, and Daukaus was not granted the submission victory.

Luckily for UFC fans, lightning more than likely won’t strike twice on this matchup between Holland and Daukaus. It’s a massive fight for both fighters, especially for Holland who is coming off of back-to-back losses to Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori.

Holland and Daukaus seemed very keen on an immediate rematch following the bout; especially Daukaus, who looked visibly upset with the decision to not rule the fight in his favor.

Holland had one of the most remarkable calendar years in combat sports in 2020, winning five straight bouts including an incredible knockout from his back against Jacare Souza. He also earned knockouts over Joaquin Buckley and Anthony Hernandez.

One of the biggest issues that Holland has had over his young UFC career had been his takedown defense and overall grappling game. He worked with former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier leading up to the fight with Daukaus but didn’t get much of an opportunity to showcase improvements.

We’ll hope to earn answers to those questions when Holland and Daukaus go to battle once again in just a few weeks.
