Melissa Gatto stunned the world at UFC Vegas 92 as her fight with Tamires Vidal took a very bizarre turn in the third round.

Up until that point, the fight had been playing out quite normally. Both fighters were eager to get a win, and as the rounds passed, they both never abandoned hopes. The fight for Gatto was of much significance, as her last two outings would see her be defeated. She seemed to be ahead going into the third round, and that’s when things took a turn for the bizarre.

In the third round, Melissa Gatto landed a punch that caught Vidal in the breast. Vidal turned away as if she expected things to maybe get stopped, and Gatto didn’t intend to stop anything. She poured on the pressure and swarmed her opponent, prompting the referee, Chris Tognoni, to stop the fight, signaling a TKO victory for Melissa Gatto.

Such a stoppage was definitely very odd, but luckily the fights were held at the UFC Apex, and things were so silent you might’ve been able to hear a pin drop. It was soon confirmed that the strike was indeed legal, albeit extremely rare. Gatto was awarded the victory, and just like that, her losing streak was officially put to rest.

While punches to the torso are universally legal under the current rules, one might say that a punch to the breast of a woman is a bit extreme. When men are hit in the groin, a timeout is issued due to the debilitating pain. It also doesn’t take a woman to imagine that getting hit in the breast is probably a similar pain. Yet, such a thing is very rare and hasn’t really happened enough for such a special rule change to be made.

Do you think a timeout should be given for breast shots in MMA?

Manchester’s own Lerone Murphy delivered a star-making performance in the UFC Vegas 92 headliner on Saturday night.

Gunning for his first win against a ranked contender, Murphy was tasked with taking on Octagon icon and 35-fight veteran Edson Barboza inside The APEX in Las Vegas. From the get-go, Murphy had the advantage on the feet, forcing Barboza to bite on his feints and land at will with the right hand.

Murphy survived a scary moment in the waning seconds of the opening round when he ate a vicious upkick from Barboza that had him rocked and appeared to break his nose. Despite the moment of adversity, Murphy came back in round two and delivered a near-perfect fight for the next four rounds. After five rounds of action, Murphy had outstruck ‘Junior’ 259 to 79. On top of that, ‘The Miracle’ landed four of six takedowns clocking more than five minutes of control time.

Needless to say, Murphy ran away with it on the scorecards, bagging his 14th career victory and sixth win under the UFC banner.

Official Result: Lerone Murphy def. Edson Barboza via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45, 50-45)

Racking up another highlight-reel finish amongst a career of shocking knockout finishes, Brazilian star, Barboza has floated a future BMF title fight with Hawiian favorite, Holloway, claiming his résumé of stoppages should firmly cement him as a deserving challenger.

I love Max Holloway, he’s one of my favorite fighters ever. I love to watch him fight, and he’s a very nice guy, very family guy, but imagine a fight against him for the BMF belt.”

“It’s going to be very, very good for me and him and the company,” Edson Barboza explained. “Like I said, I have 30 fights in the UFC. I think I deserve that. Of course, my focus is 100 percent on the next one, but I think it’s going to be good.”

And linked with a return at both the lightweight and featherweight limit, Holloway has been favored to take on incumbent 145lbs champion, Ilia Topuria in a blockbuster showdown next.
