Cannonier

#3 ranked UFC middleweight contender, Jared Cannonier is back in the victor’s enclosure — lodging his fourth victory at middleweight via a very close and competitive unanimous decision triumph over former interim title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum to round out tonight’s UFC Vegas 34 card.

Cannonier gets off to a bright start in the opening round, offering up a wide array of punishing kicks, particularly to Gastelum’s outside right leg as well as switching in right kicks to the mid-section. Some decent movement from Gastelum in the first as well.

Utilizing his always-impressive boxing in that second round, Kings MMA staple, Gastelum landed a crisp left straight, resulting in a notable stumble back to the fence from Cannonier who appeared to have some trouble with the Arizonian’s striking in that frame.

Uncorking a massive check right hook, Cannonier dropped Gastelum early in the third round, before going mere millimeters wide with an immediate high-kick. Tremendous recovery from Gasteum from that shot who managed to close out the remainder of the round with some good strikes of his own.

Another very competitive round between the two with Cannonier still not appearing overly comfortable dealing with what he receives back from Gastelum ahead of the fifth and final round.

A lot of pressure in that fifth and final frame from Gastelum as has been his calling card throughout this fight, with Cannonier attempting to set up his shots from the fence whilst circling.

Catch the highlights from Cannonier’s victory over Gastelum below.

Pantoja

Likely earning his first shot at UFC flyweight gold, Alexandre ‘The Cannibal’ Pantoja is also primed for a title rematch against recently minted titleholder, Brandon Moreno — via an impressive second round rear-naked choke over the pressing, Brandon Royval to kick off the main card of UFC Vegas 34.

Opening up the main card portion of UFC Vegas 34 tonight, Pantoja and Royval got off to a frenetic pace early, with the Brazilian immediately engaging with clinch work and grappling exchanges, taking the latter’s back for the majority of the opening round.

Attempting to granby roll on cue, Royval almost set up his own heel hook attempt during a scramble, before he was clipped with what appeared to be a well-placed right hand during latter striking exchanges before the close of the first round.

Again taking Royval’s back in the opening minute of the second round, Rio de Janeiro native, Pantoja patiently locked his hands around Royval’s chin, forcing an eventual tap in the process — as he looks to meet with defending champion, Moreno following an initial clash on The Ultimate Fighter before a UFC Fight Night Santiago matchup back in May 2019. In both pairings, Pantoja emerged victorious.

Below, catch Pantoja’s submission stoppage over Royval.

UFC Vegas 33

It’s now five consecutive victories for the #11 ranked, Sean ‘Tarzan’ Strickland who met with Uriah ‘Prime Time’ Hall at UFC Vegas 33. And with the help of a concise and composed gameplan, outstruck the dynamic kicker from pillar to post for five rounds.

Strickland starting aggressively as expected early, closing distance and firing off shots each time Hall attempts to set up some shots of his own.

Continued pressure from Strickland who walks Hall down and sticks a very heavy jab into the Spanish Town native’s face. Some urgency from Hall toward the end of the first frame, however, Strickland’s pressure and output from the opening klaxon should see him lift that frame 10-9.

Another impressive opening couple of exchanges for Strickland who has managed to mitigate and stifle the striking of Hall with that jab and forward locomotion. An inadvertent leg kick from Strickland catches Hall on the cup resulting in a brief stoppage in the action. Wheel kick attempts goes close for Hall before the klaxon but that’s another 10-9 for Strickland.

Some real positive grappling from Strickland sees him trip a wilting Hall at the fence before assuming half guard and working to side-control.

Hall showing some urgency in the fourth in a quite positive round for him which includes some good Octagon control from the dynamic striker with Strickland’s output quite limited.

Hall likely in need of a finish in this fifth and final round. Strickland really poured on some pressure in the closing minute of the fourth, bloodying the striker.

More of the same in the fifth and final round as Strickland manages to evade winging hooks from Hall and impose that heavy and stiff jab up and until the final klaxon.

Catch the highlights from Strickland’s impressive unanimous decision victory below.
