UFC 142 will be an exciting event for fans of mixed martial arts, but the popularity and excitement over the NFL playoffs will steer casual fans away from this weekend’s UFC event.

Let’s be real, the NFL playoffs would dominate anything in a television ratings battle because pro football is king in America.

Last Sunday’s Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game on CBS got a 25.9 rating, the highest ever for an AFC Wild Card game since the 1988 playoffs.

With Tim Tebow competing with the UFC on Saturday night, the ratings for UFC 142 will be very low, and few people will buy it on pay-per-view.

Tebow is the most popular player in sports right now, and his matchup against the New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady is so exciting.

The Broncos and Patriots game starts at 8 p.m. ET, and could easily run past 11 p.m. With the game going deep into the night, people will not want to buy UFC on pay-per-view when they can watch Tebow, because that game is what everyone will be talking about on Saturday night.

The best-case scenario for the UFC is if the Patriots are destroying the Broncos by halftime or during the third quarter. That is the only way that casual fans will feel inclined to move from the football game to UFC 142.

Tebow’s journey with the Broncos this season is the most compelling story in sports, and against the UFC, the NFL playoffs will dominate the televisions of sports fans in America on Saturday.

It was just two weeks ago when former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem (36-11, 1NC) landed a left kick to Brock Lesnar’s midsection in the main event of UFC 141.

Overeem was looking to make a statement to the entire world that he was the No. 1 heavyweight contender, but he certainly wasn’t looking to beat Lesnar into retirement. It’s just the way things worked out, as Lesnar announced his retirement from the sport during the post fight interview.

It’s something that ‘The Demolition Man’ feels bad about, no really.

The Dutch fighter tells color commentator Mauro Ranallo that he feels “a little s**ty about sending Brock Lesnar into retirement” during Friday’s “The MMA Show”.

“I think Brock was great for the sport. I watched his fights. I would wake up in the morning and the first thing I did was watch his fights. Even thought he had a lot of criticism about his experience and behaviour, I think he was very enjoyable to watch. I’m going to miss him. I feel a little s***ty about sending him into retirement, but it’s a sport and you can either kill or be killed. I appreciate Brock’s time and I’m going to miss him.”

Ryan Jimmo MFC 31

Fans will have to wait to see “the robot” as injuries to UFC newcomers light heavyweight Ryan ‘Big Deal’ Jimmo (16-1) and lightweight Reza ‘Mad Dog’ Madadi (11-2), have forced both fighters off of the upcoming UFC on FX 1 card, which is set to go down next weekend in Tennessee.

Jimmo, the current Maximum Fighting Championship 205-lbs strap holder, had been scheduled to face Czech fighter Karlos Vemola (8-2), while Madadi was to meet Fabrício Camões (13-6-1).

UFC officials are currently searching for a new opponent for Camões, and have opted to pull Vemola from the card instead of finding a new opponent on one weeks notice. The promotion announced the news via Twitter (@ufc) on Friday night.

Two changes to UFC @FXNetworks 1 card: Jimmo/Vemola off due to Jimmo injury; Madadi out of fight vs. Camoes, replacement for Camoes TBA soon

UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller (aka UFC on FX 1) is scheduled to take place on January 20, 2012 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The main card will air live on FX, with the prelim card airing live on Fuel TV.

Jimmo, who does a mean “robot” dance, is currently on a sixteen fight winning streak, which includes winning and defending the 205-lbs strap twice. His last victory took place in October at MFC 31, with a unanimous decision win over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

Madadi has won six in a row, with his most recent victory coming in April over Rick Clementi for the Superior Challenge lightweight title. The Iranian born fighter has earned other notable wins against Carlo Prater and Junie Browning.
