“The Ultimate Fighter” season 5 veteran Gabe Ruediger wanted to get back into the UFC since his release after losing to Melvin Guillard way back at UFC 63 in 2006. The lightweight fighter talks about telling UFC president Dana White that he wanted to get back to the promotion and that he wanted to face fellow TUF 5 fighter Joe Lauzon.
With an injury to Terry Etim earlier this month, Ruediger was offered a chance at the UFC and Lauzon.
In this interview Ruediger talks about getting another shot at the UFC, the short training period, and his personal beef with Joe Lauzon.
UFC Hall of Famer and former champion Randy Couture (18-10) has nothing but respect for his UFC 118 opponent James Toney, which he’s shown in not bad mouthing the boxing champion.

UFC Hall of Famer and former champion Randy Couture (18-10) has nothing but respect for his UFC 118 opponent James Toney, which he’s shown in not bad mouthing the boxing champion.
He’s taking this fight very seriously and, unlike many purists, doesn’t see his co-main event bout as a “freakshow.”
“I don’t think it’s a freak show,” said Couture, who is a 7-to-1 favorite over Toney. “I give him credit for the things he’s accomplished in boxing. I certainly accomplished a lot of things in wresting that nobody gave me credit for when I made my way in to MMA.
“Those combative sports count for something. James is going to be dangerous.”
Couture talked with the LasVegasSun.com recently about this fight and is so excited about the bout that he spilled the beans on how he plans on defeating Toney.
“I would love to choke the hell out of him,” Couture said. “I think that’s a big piece of MMA and certainly a big piece I’ve been working on.”
The matchup in styles favors Couture so much, he admits it’s probably why he was given the fight against Toney over anyone else.
“I suspect it’s because I tend to be a cerebral fighter,” Couture said of why UFC brass chose him to welcome Toney to the sport. “They probably realize I have a good chance of taking him down, putting him on his back and making the point that needs to be made.”
“The Natural” was asked which opponent he’d like to fight next and responded with former UFC light-heavyweight champ Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida’s name. Obviously, Couture isn’t looking for any easy fights and still wants to be competitive at age 47.
“I’ve said all along Lyoto (Machida),” Couture said. “He’s kind of been an enigma to everyone, (Mauricio Shogun Rua) was the first to kind of solve that equation. Shogun himself would be interesting. Those are two guys at the top of the heap right now.”

“I think every fighter should have that motivation to finish because it puts more money in all of our pockets and it builds the UFC as well as making everyone happy all around. There is a lot of controversy with people taking the fight out of Ultimate Fighting, you know and they really wanna go to a decision and they feel happy with that. If that’s the way they like to do things, that’s the way they do it.
“For me, I’ve always been about the fight and I’m more of a fighter than an athlete. Maybe that’s why people have said I never come in, in shape and these types of things because that’s what I am. I’m not an athlete, I didn’t grow up playing all types of sports my whole life. All I ever did was get into a fight and a lot of it was over emotion. So as far as that goes I vote to keep the Fight in Ultimate Fighting.”
Penn was asked if he sees a trend in fighters working towards a decision rather than a finish.
“I definitely see a trend, and a trend I see is every fighter looks the same. Every fighter looks exactly the same, it’s just crazy. I guess that is just the future of the sport and how it’s evolved. Nobody wants to be on their back because, even though the guy doesn’t do one bit of damage your still gonna lose the fight. That is really effecting how all the fighters fight because the judges, as we all know, don’t know what their doing.
“The whole judging, I don’t think anyone should get points for any of the grappling positions. It’s like what’s the sense of taking Demian Maia down, why should you get points and why should you get points for mounting James Toney. It’s about damage and submission attempts, it’s the only thing that really matters in the fight.”
