Francis Ngannou

Former heavyweight title challenger Francis Ngannou has expressed his confusion regarding the UFC Heavyweight title.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Ngannou expressed his thoughts on what needs to happen to get the division moving again.

“I thought my last fight was for the title fight, I thought this fight would be for the title fight but it couldn’t happen so I don’t know, I’ll see what happens”.

The heavyweight continued to elaborate about the trilogy fight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier than needs to happen before anyone else is eligible for a title shot.

“Our division has been frustrating and held up for a very long time, there’s a lot of things that I think they still have to put together to put the division back online because the division, it’s kind of weird a little bit. It’s going to be almost one year since the fight for the title when is the next fight for the title in the heavyweight division, no one knows, when is that fight against Stipe and DC?”.

Recently Dana White shared that he would consider stripping Stipe of the heavyweight title if he was unwilling to compete to get the division moving again.

This wasn’t taken to kindly with Stipe replying on twitter sharing his reluctance to fight wasn’t because he didn’t want to, it was because he wouldn’t be able to train.

“My head coach can’t open his gym by law right now. I don’t hold myself higher than any other person in regards to what I’m allowed to do. Ohio is under orders until May 29th. The second the gym can open, we begin camp. Plain and simple. I have never ducked anyone”.

At this stage there is no scheduled date for the heavyweight champ to defend his belt, leaving Francis Ngannou with more uncertainty should he emerge victorious at UFC249.

Do you believe Stipe should be stripped to get the division back in motion?

UFC Heavyweight Greg Hardy has shared his feelings ahead of his upcoming bout against Yorgan De Castro at UFC 249.

Speaking to MMA Junkie at the UFC’s virtual media day Hardy was asked if he considered not taking his upcoming fight due to his issues with asthma and the coronavirus being an airborne disease.

“Oh I’m terrified man, but you know that’s not gonna stop me from paving the way, that’s not gonna stop me from making sure my boss has got the most entertaining fight first back on tv out of all sports. This is the biggest event you need the biggest athletes and I’m him”.

The UFC heavyweight found himself under heavy criticism back in October of 2019 when he used an inhaler between rounds during his fight against Ben Sosoli.

A fight Hardy was would win eventually was overturned to a No Contest due to the use of the prohibited item although the referee approved the use during the fight.

After this Hardy would take a short notice fight against Alexander Volkov only 3 weeks later.

This did not go as planned for the heavyweight as he was shut out losing a unanimous decision.

Regarding this loss, Hardy told MMA Junkie that there were positive things that accompanied it.

“I want to start by saying losing is always unacceptable, but you know as far as that goes it was a good experience man you know, 1. I got to leave the country, never left the country before so that was super dope. 2. I got to fight you know a top-five fighter coming off of a wonderful break looking at his strongest you know so it was amazing to test my skills amazing to let myself and the world know that I’m a competitor I’m no longer really a contender, I’m a guy who brings allot to the table and I’ve earned in spades what I have now in the UFC”.

Media Day

During this time, Allot of changes have had to be made to the UFC’s usual fight week practices in order to accommodate restrictions in place for COVID-19.

One fight week event that will still remain is media day. The day held for media to interview fighters competing on the card that weekend will still go ahead however it will see a different platform than the traditional face to face interviews.

In a report by MMA Junkie, It was stated UFC 249 would be holding a virtual media day.

“Media members who register for the event in advance will be able to participate in digital scrum-style interviews with fighters from the main card and featured preliminary card bouts”.

They also shared that the same format is intended to be used during the event with winners partaking in virtual scrums after their bouts.

With UFC 249 taking place at the VyStar Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, and the next two UFC events also being held there on the 13th and 16th of May, The UFC intends to use the same format for media on all events.

Here is a list of all the fighters that will be participating in the UFC 249 media day.

  • Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje
  • Henry Cejudo, Dominik Cruz
  • Francis Ngannou, Jairzinho Rozenstruik
  • Jeremy Stephens, Calvin Kattar
  • Greg Hardy, Yorgan De Castro
  • Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis

It is not clear how long the UFC intends for media to use a digital platform as opposed to attending the events. With the plan for future events to be held on the newly purchased private island “Fight Island,” the days of media covering the UFC from the venue seem far in the distance.

With safety as there priority having extra people inside the venue isn’t possible during this pandemic.

When do you think we will see media covering the sport from the event again?

Veteran MMA reporter Dave Meltzer has shared details on the location of UFC 249.

Speaking on the Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer reported that the VyStar Veterans Memorial Area in Jacksonville, Florida would be the new location to host the much-anticipated event.

“It looks like it’s going to be the (VyStar) Veterans Memorial in Jacksonville. I Think It’s disclosed then. They’ve actually told fighters they’re flying into Jacksonville, but there are people in Jacksonville that have to book a building. That’s where it looks like it’s going to be. It’s right across from daily’s place (Amphitheatre)”. (Via sherdog.com)

While no official venue has been announced from the UFC, rumours have been circulating about Florida playing host since the event was cancelled.

The reason for the speculation stemmed from the government in Florida classifying the WWE as an essential service and allowing them to conduct business in the state. Following the cancellation of UFC 249’s initial date (April 18th) due to a request from the Californian Governor Gavin Newsom, it seemed Florida the most likely choice.

UFC 249 has gone through multiple venues at this stage, originally being booked for the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York. Once this venue was no longer possible it was rumoured that the event would be moved to the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, unfortunately, this was not possible either. Eventually, the UFC found a location on tribal land at Tachi Palace in California where the event looked set to continue until Newsom made a phone call to executives at Disney requesting UFC 249 not go ahead.

The UFC decided not to go ahead with the event on that date instead rescheduling it to May 9th along with a new line-up of fights.

As of yet, no details have been announced regarding the location of the event.

Tony Ferguson Explains

UFC 249’s cancellation came as a surprise to the main event fighter Tony Ferguson.

During an interview with The OCR’s Brian Martin, Ferguson was informed of the breaking news his fight on April 18th against Justin Gaethje had been cancelled.

“Oh Wow”.

“Ohhhhh well. I’m still gonna train”.

Ferguson was surprised by the news however, this was not the first time UFC 249 had thrown a curveball at the former interim champion. Originally scheduled for April 18th in Brooklyn against UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The event would see its location up in the air with the Champion inevitably returning to Russia unable to compete. Due to this Ferguson agreed to a late replacement fight against contender Justin Gaethje to be held at Tachi Palace, California.

Keeping in good spirits Ferguson told Martin his plans for this time.

“Ummm, you know what? I’m sure it’s for a good reason. Let’s be real. I gotta keep the faith, I gotta keep this (expletive) keep this circle close, bro, and just keep focusing on what we can control, which is our heart rate and breathing”.

“Dude, I’m gonna keep collecting trophies and doing my same shit, Every single time I wake up in the morning, when I do my work, say my prayers and I do stuff, I hug my little boy, kiss my wife. I just keep doing what I’m doing, what am I gonna do?”

“The constant is things are always gonna change. The variable is how am I gonna react to it? So we could throw that variable, baby, and we make that the constant. Which is why I’m gonna keep smiling, I’m gonna keep training, and you know what? I’m gonna put on some muscle. Dude, I’m skinny. I’m gonna put on some muscle.”

“I’m gonna try my best. I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna try my best. If I fall I’ll get back up”.
