Every time a UFC champion moves his or her belt to another weight division, someone in that weight division takes a hit. This is especially evident when you look back, Frankie Edgar found himself out of the loop when the competition between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz got intense and likewise, Robert Whittaker has been sidelined with the introduction of ex welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre into the middleweight division. These are just two examples, just the tip of the ice berg.

This time around, this scenario is playing itself out as bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw is keen on making the move to the flyweight division and challenge himself against Demetrious Johnson. So, who gets left behind this time? Well, that honor will go to Jimmie Rivera who stands at 135 pounds.

Technically speaking, Rivera should have already been scheduled for a title fight given his record. He has taken on and beaten illustrious opponents such as the likes of Luri Alcantara, Thomas Almeida and even Urijah Faber. Not only has he achieved wins against such names, but has done so pretty convincingly on several occasions too. Dominick Cruz may have been the one for the Bantamweight title shot, however, given his arm injury, Jimmy Rivera is a no brainer in terms of being the right candidate for a bantamweight title shot.

However, despite how obvious it is to the rest of us, the UFC does not seem to agree. Instead of a title fight, Rivera has been pit against a pretty deadly John Lineker and will have to come out victorious if he does not want to see his name do bottom of the titles hot contenders list.

Lineker is no slouch in the ring. He knows how to throw and connect body punches very effectively. His record currently stands at 11-3. In terms of predictions, we know for a fact that Rivera is capable of victory here, its just a shame that he has to take this risk at all, though. We will go with Rivera to win by unanimous decision.

UFC 219 Predictions – Cynthia Calvillo Vs. Carla Esparza

We all know that the UFC has some fighters that it favors more than others. The UFC does not particularly do a good job at hiding this. One example of this – they privately flew out a star chef so he can make hot wings for Rhonda Rousey to celebrate, but then they ostracized Holy […]

We all know that the UFC has some fighters that it favors more than others. The UFC does not particularly do a good job at hiding this. One example of this – they privately flew out a star chef so he can make hot wings for Rhonda Rousey to celebrate, but then they ostracized Holy Holm in public for no good reason. Dana White, like it or not, has some preferences in terms of fighters.

In the women’s fight divisions, Rose Namajunas was another one of the UFCs pet fighters. Her fixtures were lined up and planned in such a way that her career would grow and she would become the first strawweight champion in the UFC. However, thanks to Carla Esparza, things did not exactly go as planned for Namajunas. She was defeated fair and square by Esparza and the only thing the UFC could do was hide Namajunas under the proverbial bed.

Esparza then went on to UFC 185 to defend her strawweight title, but she lost to Joanna Jedrzejczykand the UFC pretty much decided to give her a hard time after this. For her next fight, she was put in the middle of the bout somewhere, but she was able to take a satisfying victory in UFC 197 to mark her bounce back from loss.

She will now take on Calvillo who holds a record of 6-0 in her pro career. Esparza is a little too seasoned for Calvillo and should be able to take victory here.

UFA 218 – Max Holloway Vs. Frankie Edgar Predictions

Max Holloway took his time to reach the top, but when he eventually got there, he had left a wake of destruction like no other. Two years ago, the Hawaiian fighter put up with fight after fight that seemed to take him nowhere given that he was already at the top of the featherweight division, but Holloway went in and held on to his worthy spot each time. He came up against all sorts of opponents from new hot prospects, to aging starts, to established veterans and always managed to come out on top.

He was eventually given a fight that meant progress for him – he fought Jose Aldo and beat him convincingly. There were only a handful of fighters that he had not yet faced and conquered, and Frankie Edgar is one of those fighters.

Edgar, the ex – lightweight champ, now (since 2013) fights in the featherweight category and has always been around the top ranks. Even though he is not the youngest fighter out there, Edgar has managed to remain nimble, agile and quick on his feet. He is now 36, and most believe this is essentially his last real chance at clinching gold again in the UFC.

Holloway is physically bigger, younger, and certainly more lustful for victory here and we cannot see how Edgar could face his wrath and come out on top. However, knowing Edgar Davis, he has come out on top when you least expected it in the past and what is to say he cannot do it again right here at UFC 218? It Edgar wants to give himself a chance, he will have to hit hard and connect during the early stages of the fight, the longer it goes on, the more it will turn out in Holloway’s favor.

In terms of prediction – Holloway to win by TKO.

UFA 218 – Alistair Overeem Vs. Francis Ngannou Predictions

The heavyweight division of the MMA lacks luster to say the least. This may come down to the fact that the UFC’s payouts are pretty minimal and so the best athletes end up in places such as the NFL and only aged, about – to retire kind of fighters from here cross over to the […]

The heavyweight division of the MMA lacks luster to say the least. This may come down to the fact that the UFC’s payouts are pretty minimal and so the best athletes end up in places such as the NFL and only aged, about – to retire kind of fighters from here cross over to the UFC and are still good enough to become some of the best fighters in the sport.

There are several fighters who find themselves at the top spots in the UFCs heavyweight division simply because there have been no real challengers coming in to repeal and replace them. Leaving the heavyweight division lacking in terms of both sporting quality and entertainment value.

However, with the introduction of Francis Ngannou, things have looked up for the heavyweight division. He has been a packet of energy in an otherwise boring weight division and come UFC 218, Ngannou will really get the chance to showcase his talents as he comes up against aging Alistair Overeem who seems to have been around forever.

Having said that, Overeem is certainly not someone you can push around, he might be an aging star, but he will not go out without putting up a good fight. He has always improved in terms of skills and fitness despite his age not being on the prime side. He has some sharp kick boxing skills and a mean guillotine choke under his sleeve and is a pragmatic fighter with a good amount of experience under his belt, enough to cause problems for Ngannou. The UFC seems to have put together the only possible fight which is palatable in the heavyweight division.

Prediction – Overeem to win by unanimous decision.

UFA 218 – Henry Cejudo Vs. Sergio Pettis Predictions

The sad reality is that there are a lot many fans out there that have unknowingly been complaining about the lack of top notch, high quality fighters in the flyweight division lately. However, if you are to consider the fashion and dominance with which these two fighters, Henry Cejudo and Sergio Pettis, have risen through […]

The sad reality is that there are a lot many fans out there that have unknowingly been complaining about the lack of top notch, high quality fighters in the flyweight division lately. However, if you are to consider the fashion and dominance with which these two fighters, Henry Cejudo and Sergio Pettis, have risen through the ranks, you will certainly understand why that argument is flawed. These fighters have not only been getting results, but have done so in a way which has been highly entertaining for the fan that wants to see some quality mixed martial arts action. And now, they come up against each other – you really can’t ask for more.

In terms of lineage, it does not get much better than what the pedigree that Cejudo has. Cejudo holds an Olympic gold medal in the sport of freestyle wrestling – how about that for silencing the complaints about the lack of flyweight talent? In fact, since his entry into the MMA after he concluded his freestyle wrestling career, he became one of MMA’s hottest new prospects.

On the other hand, Pettis has risen through some harder times. He had a hard time finding his footing when he got into the MMA as a hot prospect and a former RFA champion. However, a win against Chris Cariaso is what it took for him to build up momentum and confidence and he went on a four win streak and has looked solid ever since.

This UFC 218 bout is an already incredible fixture which is only made better by the fact that the winner here could go on to get a shot against the current flyweight champion – Demetrious Johnson. In terms of prediction, this one is hard to call, but Cejudo might have the edge considering his grappling expertise, we will have to go with Cejudo to win via submission.

UFA 218 – Eddie Alvarez Vs. Justin Gaethje Predictions

Justin Gaethje really shut his critics up when he debuted against Michael Johnson and won in a comfortable and dominant fashion. Previously, he had had trouble making quick work of opponents that were seen as underdogs and this is what raised questions in terms of whether he will be able to make it in the […]

Justin Gaethje really shut his critics up when he debuted against Michael Johnson and won in a comfortable and dominant fashion. Previously, he had had trouble making quick work of opponents that were seen as underdogs and this is what raised questions in terms of whether he will be able to make it in the UFC or not. Well, so far so good.

For years now, he has been touted as one of the best fighters in the World Series of Fighting, now known as the PFL, he was and still is a very popular fighter who was known especially for his never give up attitude in the octagon and his hyper violent attacks when you least expect it. It also helped that he was an ex – NCAA Division I All – American fighter.

Gaethje aspires to be the new Eddie Alvarez. Alvarez is no stranger to the path that Gaethje has walked so far and the challenges he has lying ahead of him. In fact, Alvarez also has been through an identical path in the recent past. What fans love about Gaethje is the fact that it does not matter who his opponent is, Gaethje is going to come out swinging and he is really going to take the fight to them, be it an underdog or someone undefeated.

Focusing on Alvarez, he fought for several years in other promotions before being scouted by the UFC. He was known as the underground king of MMA and for most UFC fans, they only knew who he was after his loss at the hands of Conor McGregor.

While Gaethje is climbing up the ladder, and Alvarez is trying to steady himself, it is a fitting fixture which will make for a good fight indeed. For this UFC 218 prediction, we will have to go with Gaethje given his confidence and recent form.
