Urijah Faber drops teaser about what would bring him out of retirement to compete as a pro-MMA fighter once again under the UFC banner.

Faber decided to hang up his gloves in December of 2016 in his hometown of Sacramento. As for the reason for his retirement, he stated that it was due to a waning passion for the actual fights as well as still having his health.

Since then, he has stayed busy by remaining an integral part of Team Alpha Male as both coach and training partner. However, ever since he retired, he has made it known that if he wanted to fight and do it at a high level, he could still do it.

It’s rare in MMA that legendary fighters stick to their first retirements. There are several examples of that. Thus, in a recent interview, Faber talked about potentially fighting once again.

“Could I do some more fights? Absolutely,” Faber told MMAjunkie. “Could I do years of more fights? Absolutely. Would I maybe do some fights? Very possible. But right now, I’m enjoying having my brain and having a good time.”

“I’m still contracted to the UFC, I’m still in the USADA pooling just in case something comes up,” Faber said. “I train more than some of the guys who are pros, to be honest. I’m in the gym all the time when I’m in town, especially. I wouldn’t put it past jumping back in. I know that I’ve watched throughout. I’ve been a student of careers – guys like Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz and (Dan) Henderson and these guys who have fought well into their 40s.

“I would never rule out a comeback,” Faber said. “This is the real world. It would have to be a fight that makes a lot of sense and have some good money behind it. It’d have to get me excited. That’s all.”

Faber is slated to take on Kazushi Sakuraba in a grappling contest when the two fighters captain two out of four teams in Quintet in Las Vegas, Nevada at The Orleans Arena on Oct. 5 that will air on UFC Fight Pass.

A legendary fighting career came to an end last night (Dec. 17, 2016), as former WEC champion Urijah Faber made his final walk to the Octagon at UFC on FOX 22 from his hometown of Sacramento, California in a bantamweight bout with fellow veteran Brad Pickett.

With Faber making it known prior to last night’s event that he would be fighting for the last time, many had begun to reflect on the lengthy career of “The California Kid”. It’s now time for us here at LowKickMMA to join in on the fun and take a look at Faber’s five best fighting moments (presented in chronological order):

WEC 19: Urijah Faber vs. Cole Escovedo

One of the main knocks on Faber’s career is that he was never able to get his hands on a UFC title, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t ever a world champion. “The California Kid” won the WEC featherweight title at WEC 19 on March 17, 2006 during a time when the UFC didn’t have a 145-pound division.

Taking on the promotion’s inaugural featherweight titleholder in Cole Escovedo, Faber scored a second round stoppage victory due to a corner’s stoppage in a fight that undoubtedly marked one of the best moments of his career. This fight also marked the beginning of a successful title run for “The California Kid”.

UFC on FOX 22 went down in Sacramento, California last night, and provided plenty of fireworks. Headlined by a fantastic women’s strawweight tilt between Michelle Waterson and Paige VanZant, the California card also featured a hometown hero. Former WEC champion and Team Alpha Male founder Urijah Faber fought for the last time in his storied career. Taking on Brad Pickett in the second bout on the main card, ‘The California Kid’ wrapped up a 44-fight MMA career at the age of 37.

Faber received a touching ovation on his entrance to the octagon, but his victory was in no way assured. ‘One Punch’ is as feisty as they come, and at this stage in Faber’s career it could have gone south if he hadn’t been on point. Showing why he has long been a top fighter at the elite level, ‘TCK’ dominated the action against his British opponent.

Classic Faber

Getting the party started early on, Urijah Faber dropped Brad Pickett with some crushing punches. Displaying his tight grappling on the ground, Faber was looking for the finish throughout. After the final round, there was a clear winner, as ‘The California Kid’ shut out Pickett for three entire rounds.

Fitting End

Providing a fitting end to his illustrious career, Faber can call it a day on a victory, something many legends have been unable to do in the past. Perhaps making this moment even sweeter is the fact ‘The California Kid’ has lost two in a row before hand. Few fighters will ever make it to the level of experience and skill that Faber has. Although he never tasted UFC gold, he’ll forever be remembered as the former WEC featherweight champion and for his gritty wars with the best in the lower weight classes.

So long Urijah Faber, we salute you!

TJ Dillashaw and Urijah Faber have had quite the falling out over the last few years ever since Dillashaw left Faber’s Sacramento-based Team Alpha Male gym and there was even some talk that the former teammates would settle the score in the Octagon, but it’s unlikely as if we’ll ever get to see that fight, as ‘The California Kid” is gearing up to make his last walk to the cage.

Faber will take on Brad Pickett on Dec. 17 in his home of Sacramento and he’s already made it clear that he’ll retire after the fight. Recently speaking on the matter, Dillashaw actually showed some good will towards Faber, although he did say that it’s time for the former WEC champion to ‘call it quits’:

“I do believe it’s time for him to retire,” Dillashaw said during Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “He’s actually, I feel like, declined in his skills rather than getting better, and you need people around you telling you, ‘alright man, it’s time. You’ve done a good job, it’s time for you to hang it up. You’ve got some fighters coming into the gym, that are some new guys, who are kind of beating up on you. It’s time to call it quits.’”

“So hopefully he comes out and looks good and he does it in Sacramento. He always is amped up when he fights there. He’s, by far, a town favorite. He’s a fan favorite. So hopefully he can make a good showing.”

Putting all the bad blood aside, Dillashaw said that he only wishes for the best for Faber in his life after fighting:

“That’s so crazy and it’s such high school drama,” Dillashaw said. “But what it comes down to, when it’s all done and said, we do have a past, we do have a history, and with him retiring, he’s done wonders for this sport as well. You hope he goes out on a good note.

“Even though the guy has really pissed me off, and I’ve had, and still do, a lot of unpleasant hate for the guy, for the way he acted, (when it’s) all done and said, I don’t wish anything bad on the guy.”

Do you believe it’s time for “The California Kid” to call it a career?
