Urijah Faber doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with Dominick Cruz, but he can sympathize with the latter’s frustration about his latest defeat.
Cruz returned to action at UFC 249 last weekend as he looked to reclaim the bantamweight title from Henry Cejudo. However, after getting dropped by a knee and receiving a number of unanswered shots while he was trying to get up, referee Keith Peterson called an end to the contest with just seconds remaining in the second round.
Cruz protested immediately and was not happy with the call. He went on to accuse Peterson of smelling like cigarettes and alcohol after the fight which has drawn plenty of criticism from many in the combat sports world, though Cruz hasn’t backed down from his comments as of yet.
Faber has endured his own problems with early stoppages in the past and believes some leeway should be given, especially in big championship fights.
“The referees are in there to do their job and save guys from taking too much damage,” Faber said during a post-fight scrum at UFC Florida last night (via Bloody Elbow). “But at the end of the day, especially in world championship fights when you’re dealing with guys that are future Hall-of-Famers and multiple time world champions, we want to remove all doubt. We want to know, like, ‘I had no more chance.’
“So I feel for him on that. I feel like he could’ve still had a chance, and that’s always the part that irks you. So I can understand his frustration.”
As for Cruz’s allegation, Faber finds it hard to believe Peterson was inebriated.
“I doubt that Keith Peterson was drunk,” Faber said. “He might’ve been sweating some alcohol and definitely smelling some cigarettes, but I don’t think he was drunk. He was trying to look after Dom.”
Faber: Cruz Looked Good At UFC 249
That said, he does believe his old rival looked good despite competing for the first time since December 2016.
“I thought he looked good,” Faber added. “You never know how people are ageing, everybody’s different, but he’s got a style that lends to a long career.
“It makes me more and more impressed with Henry Cejudo, what a champion. It’s hard to take him serious sometimes, but you’re forced to when he keeps doing what he’s doing.”

Fight legend Urijah Faber made a surprise appearance at the UFC on ESPN 8 weigh-ins earlier today. ‘The California Kid’ took to the scales and made the lightweight limit despite the fact he isn’t scheduled to fight on the card. Faber hasn’t fought since losing to Petr Yan at UFC 245 late last year. The Russian dominated the fight from the start and ultimately finished the fight with a beautiful head-kick KO.
The former WEC champion is currently in Jacksonville, Florida as a coach for Song Yadong who is supposed to be fighting Marlon Vera tomorrow night. However, according to Ariel Helwani Yadong is currently having some visa issues that may prevent him from fighting. If so, the UFC will attempt to make a short-notice fight between Faber and Vera – although it remains unclear if their varying weights will be an issue.
Urijah Faber Could Face Marlon Vera says Ariel Helwani
“Urijah Faber made a surprise appearance at the weigh-ins today. He weighed in at 153.5. The reason he did so is because Song Yadong, who weighed 145.5, has a potential visa issue that may preclude him from fighting tomorrow. They are trying to sort it out. Faber standing by.
“The two main questions right now are: can they issue be sorted in time for the event and if not would the commission allow Faber to fight Vera who weighed in at 145.5. All fluid at the moment.”

Urijah Faber is set to return to action — but not in the Octagon.
The former UFC bantamweight title challenger announced on Instagram that he will be taking on flyweight Dustin Ortiz in a grappling match. That matchup will headline Copa Podio: California which takes place Sunday at Vacaville, California.
“Itching to compete! March 8th sub grappling match w @dustinortizmma on the horizon!” Faber wrote. “First event for @[email protected] here in Nor-Cal. @fabiopradobjj hoping Sacramento’s grappling community is ready!”
UFC veterans Danny Castillo and Carlos Rocha are also on the card as they will compete in a no-gi fight.
Faber came out of retirement last year when he defeated Ricky Simon via first-round knockout at UFC Sacramento. However, Faber was unable to end 2019 on a high as he suffered a brutal knockout defeat to Petr Yan at UFC 245 back in December. There is no word if he plans on competing in mixed martial arts.
Ortiz, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since getting outpointed by Joseph Benavidez at UFC Brooklyn in January last year. That setback halted a three-fight winning streak for the flyweight contender.
Regardless, who do you have winning in the grappling department this weekend at Copa Podio: California?
