Several rumors circulating about Brock Lesnar returning to the octagon will have to wait – at least for now.

Several sources, including Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, recently reported that Lesnar had re-entered the USADA drug testing pool, a requirement for coming out of retirement to potentially compete in the UFC.

However, that just isn’t the case according to UFC vice president of athlete health and wellness Jeff Novitzky, who confirmed to MMA Fighting that Lesnar had not re-entered the pool for any supposed comeback, which was rumored to be at November 4’s pay-per-view spectacular from Madison Square Garden. If he did choose to do so and come out of retirement, then Lesnar will have a full slate of requirements to bypass before he could potentially fight.

First and most impactful is his one-year anti-doping suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance in both out and in-competition samples before and after his smothering win over Mark Hunt at last year’s UFC 200, a somewhat uninspired return that actually lead to “The Super Samoan” leveling a racketeering (among other nefarious charges) lawsuit at the UFC, Lesnar, and Dana White. Lesnar’s suspension is ‘frozen,’ and so he would still have more than six months to serve even if he did choose to un-retire, meaning he could not compete until next year at the earliest.

Novitzky spelled it out in his response to MMA Fighting:

“If he ever re-entered the program, he’d have to serve [the duration of the suspension] before he’d be able to compete.”

A comeback seems like a far-off possibility for Lesnar as of right now; then again, no one thought he would ever return to the octagon last year after almost five years way from MMA as he won titles in pro-wrestling. But there are just too many significant roadblocks that stand in the way of his return to come close to anything final, and with it being confirmed he has not actually re-entered the pool and still has a significant amount of time left on his suspension, these rumors can now be considered to be only that – rumors.

The UFC is in a tough spot because they got blasted with a ton of criticism for allowing Lesnar to only be tested for one month prior to his UFC 200 return via an exemption from the then-required four months for a returning athlete, so it could be unlikely that, under new ownership WME-IMG, they choose to become involved in any avoidable controversy. Lesnar would have been a big name to add to the marquee of what is sure to be one of the biggest UFC events of a year that needs a couple of those quite desperately.

Georges St-Pierre has been rumored to be making his oft-discussed return to the octagon at that card, and Conor McGregor has also been linked to a NY return after he boxes Floyd Mayweather on August 26.

As of right now, those names will just have to be enough, because Lesnar will be out until 2018.

On July 29, former light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will look to redeem over five years of mistakes and regain the title that was stripped from him two years ago when he meets current UFC 205-pound champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 214 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

In a new promotional video for the event by the UFC unveiled during last night’s UFC 213 pay-per-view from Las Vegas, a young Jones speaks of what it means to be a champion, and how it would define him as a man. But as young Jones said, “This is will be a test of who I really am,” recollections of his many legal troubles since he won the title flash on screen, reminding us of the years that he has lost.

Watch the telling, emotional video here, courtesy of the UFC:

The former pound-for-pound king and youngest-ever UFC champion may still arguably be the best mixed martial artist ever, but overall his is a story of tragedy, bad choices and wasted potential. A hit-and-run accident that left a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman with a broken arm, cocaine abuse, violation of parole, and a DWI in the last five years kept him in and out of the octagon that he dominated with such ease during his torrid champion-finishing tour of 2011-2012 where he bested former titleholders Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, and Vitor Belfort in jaw-dropping succession.

In an interview with Joe Rogan last December, Bones opened up about his life, and most recently, being flagged by USADA, the UFC’s anti-doping agency, for a banned estrogen blocker prior to his anticipated grudge rematch with Daniel Cormier in the main event of last year’s UFC 200 after he beat “DC” by decision in their initial bout.

Due to his seedy past, it is obvious that his public relations strategy has changed, since he is now open about his actions instead of pretending they never happened. For a while, he was trying to paint himself as a benevolent victim instead of owning up to his actions, and it was clear that it was affecting his mental state, as evidenced by his lackluster performance against Ovince Saint Preux last year. But Jones dropped the act and has now embraced his bad boy persona, even using his actions to taunt his opponents.

In the UFC’s Summer Kickoff press conference, Jones told Cormier, “I beat you after a weekend of cocaine” Sheesh.

The UFC has also acknowledged Jones’ honesty as great promotional material, and is using it to write up a redemption story for the troubled 29-year-old star.

At UFC 214, Jones’ reckoning could come by way of knockout, submission, or decision. His fairy tale of defeating his demons and capturing ultimate greatness might be fulfilled, but a focused champion stands in his way.

Even his father, Pastor Arthur Jones, recognizes that his son “is his own worst enemy.” At the current time, there isn’t much more of an accurate view on the subject. Jones will face a career crossroads versus Cormier at UFC 214, and he may not have too many more second chances even if he is one of the UFC’s most well-known athletes.

We’ll soon find out if he is ready to be dominant once again, or if he is destined to be a tragic story of wasted greatness. If history would serve to tell us anything, the odds seem to unfortunately rest with the latter.

USADA, Please! Watch Nick Diaz Get Ultra-Blazed

If Nick Diaz is concerned about his provisional USADA suspension for three Whereabouts Failures in the past year, he certainly isn’t showing it.

After the UFC’s anti-doping partner informed him he was facing a potential violation, the polarizing and popular MMA bad boy celebrated like a true Diaz would – by smoking an extra-fat joint. Watch the elder Diaz statesmen continue to stick it to the man in the following video courtesy of TMZ Sports:

The chief session is sure to entertain many of the legions of Diaz’ fans, as it’s yet another instance when Diaz stuck it to the man by doing what he wants when he wanted to.

However, there’s potentially a much darker result of a video such as this, and it most certainly could end with Diaz never seeing the inside of a MMA cage again – something that may have happened without his latest potential suspension as well. Diaz was infamously suspended five years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for his third failed drug test for marijuana after his 2015 loss to Anderson Silva, a fight which was eventually changed to a no contest after Silva tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

The suspension was eventually reduced to 18 months, but Diaz, who hasn’t won a fight since he battered an aging BJ Penn in October 2011, has shown no realistic possibilities of returning to the UFC in the nearly 11 months since his ban was lifted.

He’s no doubt still one of the UFC’s top draws, but his increasing lack of desire to fight is becoming obvious, especially when he publicly posts a video of him smoking marijuana the day after it came out he was facing another suspension.

Dana White recently said he doesn’t think Diaz will ever return to the UFC, and this is certainly a significant step in that direction.

Was this the right move from the Stockton slugger?

Today, the UFC vocalized their extreme displeasure with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), who recently botched Cortney Casey’s most recent drug test.

While Casey initially tested false-positive, the TDLR eventually reversed that finding, but the damage to her reputation had already been done.

The UFC voiced their concerns with athletic commissions nationwide lacking a cohesive testing strategies, imploring them to utilize USADA instead.

Check out the UFC’s official statement on the Casey matter below.

“UFC has made it very clear that it takes anti-doping very seriously, instituting the most comprehensive anti-doping program in sports. One of the keys to this program, and any effective, world-class program, is ensuring that all athletes are treated to proper due process.

“UFC strawweight Cortney Casey’s recent case, stemming from her fight in Dallas on May 13, 2017, is a perfect example of the type of negative and damaging backlash for an athlete resulting from a false-positive. There is no better example than this for the need to have proper due process and testing in combat sports and professional sports anti-doping.

“Following the results of the additional tests at the WADA accredited laboratory, proving that Cortney did not cheat nor break any rules, UFC is requesting that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) immediately reverse its ruling and exonerate Cortney of any wrongdoing.

“UFC has offered, and continues to offer Texas and any other Commission and regulatory body around the world, the world-class expertise and experience of USADA, to assist them in properly carrying out anti-doping efforts in their state or country.”
