Valentina Shevchenko reaction UFC 285 loss

Seeing her stunning roughshod run through flyweight opposition come to a crashing, and shocking halt in the co-main event of UFC 285 last weekend, Valentina Shevchenko has promised to rebound and carve out a path to title redemption against newly-minted division best, Alexa Grasso.

Co-headlining UFC 285 beneath Saturday’s vacant heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones, and Ciryl Gane, Shevchenko dropped her undisputed flyweight crown in an eighth attempted title defense, suffering a fourth round submission defeat to Mexican challenger, Grasso.

Joining fellow Mexican-born fighters, Brandon Moreno, and Yair Rodríguez as gold holders under the UFC banner, Grasso, who was conceivably down on all three judge’s scorecards heading into the championship rounds, managed to capitalize on a miscued spinning back-kick attempt from Shevchenko, dragging the Kyrgyzstan native to the canvas.

Immediately establishing hooks, Grasso forced a wicked rear-naked choke on Shevchenko after battling a neck crank – minting herself as the new flyweight champion, and bringing a crashing end to one of the most dominant reigns in recent Octagon memory.

Valentina Shevchenko brushes off excuses for upset loss at UFC 285

Calling for an immediate championship rematch against Grasso off the back of her first defeat at the flyweight limit in the UFC, Shevchenko reflected on the loss this week, insisting she would be making no excuses for the blemish.

“Thank you everyone for the support!” Valentina Shevchenko tweeted. “Truly appreciate all of you! In good and bad thank you for being with me. Difficult times built strong people. Martial arts is my LIFE and I will be back for immediate rematch stronger than ever.”

“Fight doesn’t forget any mistake!” Valentina Shevchenko tweeted. “Especially it feels frustrating when you was dominating all the fight. No excuses, only hard work! Ready to start all over. Love you all.”

During her reign atop the flyweight pile, Shevchenko had racked up successful title defenses against Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche, Katlyn Chookagian, Jennifer Maia, Jessica Andrade, Lauren Murphy, and Taila Santos.

After losing her UFC flyweight title to Alexa Grasso in the co-main event of UFC 285, Valentina Shevchenko wants to run it back immediately.

Going into UFC 285, Valentina Shevchenko was one of the longest-reigning champions on the UFC’s roster. ‘Bullet’ was a huge favorite on the betting odds, with very few giving Grasso a chance. However, the slick Mexican boxer did not let the public’s perception sway her.

Grasso went strike for strike with Shevchenko, hurting the champ on multiple occasions. Shevchenko did have success in the grappling realms, taking Grasso down multiple times. However, in the third round, ‘Bullet’ would throw a slightly labored spinning kick, which Grasso avoided, and immediately capitalized on. She jumped on Shevcernko’s back, locked in an RNC, and quickly forced the tap.

In the aftermath of the fight, Shevchenko would immediately call for a rematch, stating the following to Joe Rogan when asked what she wants next:

“Definitely an immediate rematch because I know I was winning the fight.”

“This is kind of like what happens in mixed martial arts, you’re winning the fight all around, you have no doubt and a stupid situation can change whole game. This is part of the game. Congratulations to Alexa,” continued Shevchenko. “If not for the spinning kick it would have been a different result.” (H/T MMAWeekly)

Alexa Grasso submits Valentina Shevchenko to become UFC flyweight champion at UFC 285

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights.

The main event of the evening came between the returning greatest of all-time, former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and his opponent, former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane.

Our co-main event of the evening came at 125 lbs showcasing UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who aimed to make the eighth-straight defense of her title opposing no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso.

Shevchenko had gone 9-0 in the UFC’s flyweight division coming in since dropping down from 135 lbs, while Grasso had gone 4-0 in the UFC’s flyweight division since moving up from 115 lbs.

Round one

Shevchenko looks sharp in the early goings of the first, varying her attack well.

Grasso catches her with a good combination midway through the round however, and lands the same combination much harder not long thereafter. She also takes the champion down in the final ten seconds of the opening round, though Shevchenko was right back to her feet.

Round two

Shevchenko secures an early takedown to begin the second, and eventually passes to side control where she dominates the first three minutes of the round. Grasso gets back to her feet and lands another heavy combination, before she’s taken down once again, ending the second on her back.

Round three

Grasso is looking good on the feet, as she’s continuing to land punches in the middle of her combinations.

Shevchenko lands a quick combination before immediately shooting in on, and securing a takedown early on in the middle stretch.

Grasso gets back to her feet a couple minutes later, only to get taken down again. Shevchenko takes her back and one point, though the round ends with Grasso holding onto a guillotine choke from guard.

Round four

Much of the fourth round is spent with both women on their feet, and it was pretty even through the initial four minutes.

However, Shevchenko throws a spinning back kick and Grasso capitalizes on it, immediately taking her back and sinking in the rear naked choke. The most dominant champion in women’s flyweight history defended it as long as she could, but was eventually forced to tap.

Alexa Grasso becomes just the second UFC women’s flyweight champion in promotional history with her submission finish over the woman many believe to be the greatest female fighter of all time. She also became just the second Mexican-born champion in UFC history tonight at UFC 285.
