Zhang Looking To Become Two-Division Champ

UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang is looking to add another strap to her collection.

Zhang successfully defended her title after a 25-minute war with Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 back in March in what many regard to be greatest female mixed martial arts fight of all time.

Having already become the UFC’s first champion from China, that win further solidified Zhang as a household name back home — so much so that fans are now able to recognize her even with protective gear on.

“When I came back to China last month, I was recognized by fans in the (Tianjin) airport, which was amazing because I was wrapped in a protective suit,” she said in a recent conference call (via The Straits Times).

“Now even when I go running outside, I am recognized as well. I feel very good about this and I am glad to see more and more people get to know me and the sport of MMA.”

Zhang is looking to further challenge herself.

Although she currently boasts of just one title defense, “Magnum” is already targeting a second title in the form of Valentina Shevchenko’s women’s flyweight belt.

“If possible, I also want to challenge in the next weight (division) up and fight with that champion (flyweight title holder Valentina Shevchenko),” Zhang added.

It’s not the first time she has spoken of a potential champion vs. champion fight with Shevchenko. Even before her win against Jedrzejczyk, Zhang spoke of wanting that matchup.

Shevchenko, however, wasn’t as reciprocative.

Hollywood actress Halle Berry didn’t go unscathed while filming “Bruised” alongside UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

In the movie, Berry plays an MMA fighter and her main rival is played by Shevchenko. Naturally, there would be fight scenes involved and given that Berry was doing her own stunts, she ended up breaking some of her bones.

That said, she only heaped praise on “Bullet” as she couldn’t have asked for a better person to work with.

“I broke some stuff on this one,” Berry said on The Tonight Show (via MMA Fighting). “It’s OK, I always get hurt but I realized that when you go hard, you’re bound to get hurt. When you do your own stunts, you’re bound to get hurt.

“In this movie, I was fighting the real UFC flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko, and you know what? She had to throw some real kicks and I had to really take them and that really broke some bones. She’s a beast but I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher, a better scene mate, a better fight partner.”

At times, it even felt like the pair were actually fighting during filming. But that’s a testament to Shevchenko given her vast knowledge and experience in combat sports.

“She just brought so much reality to it for me. At times, I felt like I was really fighting,” Berry added. “Like our referee that was in the movie is a real referee and he says a couple times ‘man I thought I was watching a real fight’ because she brought so much power and authenticity to our fight scenes.”

The duo have certainly become close with Berry recently attending and embracing Shevchenko following her win over Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 in February.

The movie is currently in post-production with no release date as of now.

Valentina Shevchenko

Speaking with Ariel Helwani on ESPN MMA’s Instagram, UFC Women’s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko detailed her recovery following pulling out of her upcoming title defence at UFC 251 due to leg injury.

Shevchenko explained the injury had come about after her previous title defence against Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 in February.

After the injury began to bother her Shevchenko consulted a doctor who explained that it would take much longer to heal on its own and recommended she undergo surgery to speed up the recovery process.

A week and a half after undergoing the successful surgery in phoenix, Valentina detailed her recovery process.

“It was successful, everything’s good, now I’m doing my physical therapy and recuperating my leg back. So it’s going to be fine I’m expecting as the doctors told me and I will do everything I should do to make my recovery faster, and I am expecting to be back sometime in August”.

Due to the current climate around the world, Valentina believed this was the ideal time to have the surgery and recover before it became a bigger issue.

“You know it was like the second option because everything is on pause right now, no one is doing nothing and I thought that it’s going to be a good time to have the surgery and heal up the whole way. But at the same time, that injury that I had it could provoke a bigger injury if I left it like this. So I don’t want to have something that major because then, of course, it definitely means a year or two years out of competition and I don’t want the time”.

Shevchenko is targeting an August return, insisting she retains the same matchup booked previously for UFC 251 defending her title against #3 ranked contender Joanne Calderwood.
