The UFC’s return to Perth has taken a hit as Valentina Shevchenko will no longer be competing.

Shevchenko was set to defend her women’s flyweight title against Joanne Calderwood in the co-main event of UFC 251 taking place June 6.

However, “Bullet” will have to wait for her next potential title defense due to an ongoing leg injury per ESPN. Shevchenko sustained the original injury during her title defense against Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 last month but it hasn’t completely healed up since.

Shevchenko expects to be fully healed up by the end of August.

Even if Shevchenko was ready to compete, it is unlikely the card would have gone ahead given how the coronavirus pandemic continues to put a halt on the world. Calderwood believes the fight getting pushed back may even be a blessing in disguise given what’s going on right now:

“We got word last week that it’s going to get pushed back,” Calderwood told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “Not because of this whole thing, but something on her end. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say that, but we know for sure that it’s not going to be on June 6. I don’t know, I’m not sure what happened or what’s what, but it’s been pushed back. It could be a blessing in disguise.”

UFC 251 is expected to be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

Do you think UFC 251 will still take place or will it get postponed?

Dillon Danis took aim at Valentina Shevchenko for defending Jon Jones.

Jones was arrested Thursday morning for aggravated DWI and negligent use of a firearm in what is the latest infraction on his record. Many were not surprised given the UFC light heavyweight champion’s history as he received plenty of criticism for making yet another mistake.

Shevchenko was quick to defend him, however. The two notably shared the UFC 247 card last month as “Bullet” hit out at Jones’ critics:

“So sad the modern world is all about hype! Now many people starting to insult Jon Jones without knowing his real situation! Fighting on the same card , I could see he is kind and noble man ! Him being in all that difficult times – he will be back Stronger ! ??”

Danis was not impressed.

The Bellator fighter — who has regularly mocked and called out Jones in the past — responded to Shevchenko in a now-deleted tweet.

“Drunk driving multiple times he isn’t just putting his own life in danger but the life of others maybe you should talk to a young kid who parents have been killed by a drunk driver that were completely innocent and maybe you will rethink a noble man.”

Despite what anyone thinks about Danis, he certainly has point here.

Was Shevchenko wrong to defend Jones?

Valentina Shevchenko, Halle Berry

Flyweight champion
Valentina Shevchenko has claimed Oscar winning actress Halle Berry has the
skills to fight and compete in the UFC.

One month on from dominating and stopping top 125lb contender Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247, the champion is back on set working on her first ever movie.

The Ukrainian fighter will make her acting debut in the upcoming film Bruised which will also be a directorial debut for long-time actress Berry.

In the movie Berry plays a retired MMA fighter looking to compete again, whilst trying to reunite with her young son. Shevchenko who plays her eventual opponent has also been taken on as the Hollywood stars personal trainer during filming. According to one of the pound-for-pounds best fighters on the planet, Berry could hang in the UFC if she wanted to.

“We trained four hours a day with Halle, training non-stop.” Shevchenko told Sports Illustrated. “She did everything amazing. For this movie she started training MMA – Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu – she started everything, two or three years ago. And she’s now in such a great shape, that I can say she can be very competitive for girls in UFC as well. I don’t know if she will want to be a fighter, but she has the skills and level..and you will see it when the movie is released.”

The flyweight queen also spoke about her upcoming title defence against popular Scottish fighter Joanne Calderwood which will take place at UFC 251, in Perth, Australia on June 6/7, she said.

“I’m very happy that it’s happening in Australia,” says Shevchenko. “We’ve been in Australia last year, for one month, visiting different cities…and Perth became one of my favorites. Joanne (Calderwood) is a strong fighter and a well-rounded MMA fighter.”
