This Wednesday afternoon, the UFC have confirmed the multi-year renewal of their exclusive outfitting and apparel partnership with French equipment and apparel manufacturer, Venum – ahead of their first outing for a professional mixed martial arts event this weekend in Paris, France.

The promotion, who are set to land their Octagon in the French capital for the first time in their antiquity this weekend, field a heavyweight main event between former interim champion, hometown favorite, Ciryl Gane, and Australian puncher, Tai Tuivasa.

In the night’s co-headliner, former undisputed middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker will return to the Octagon as he meets with one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori in a high-profile co-main event. The event is scheduled to take place at the Accor Arena.

“We’re thrilled to renew our partnership with VENUM,” Senior Vice President, and UFC Global Consumer Products, Tracey Bleczinski said in a press release this Wednesday afternoon. “VENUM is an iconic combat sports brand that understands the unique needs of MMA athletes, and the feedback on the craftsmanship, style, and performance of the VENUM-designed Fight Kits and apparel has been tremendous. We’re looking forward to continuing to work with Franck Depuis and his team at VENUM to deliver outstanding fight gear and training apparel for our athletes and fans.”

“VENUM’s return to UFC in April 2021 has been a source of great pride for the VENUM team,” Venum Founder and CEO, Franck Depuis said. “The enthusiastic reception from UFC athletes and fans to the launch and release of our UFC collections has convinced us to continue our adventure inside the Octagon, and to continue to improve our products to serve a demanding and passionate public. The best is ahead of us.”

The UFC linked with Venum as part of an outfitting deal back in April of last year

In April of last year, Venum replaced Reebok as the official apparel and outfitting partner of the UFC, with the latter manufacturer remaining as the organization’s official sneaker partner – following the completion of their six-year deal.

The UFC Venum gear is finally here!

Fans now have access to the first wave of Venum gear on the UFC’s website. The new fight night collections include several pieces for the men’s and women’s lines. Not deferring much from the “leaked” images we’ve seen, the line will likely provide nostalgia as the UFC returns to its roots.

Many feel the design improves the gear available compared to the Reebok partnership’s previous offerings. The line offers walkout hoddies, walkout jerseys, variations of fight shorts (for men), pants (men), and hats. The women’s line also adds two styles of bras but only one style of fight shorts.

Pricing, however, has not changed. A walkout hoodie will set you back $150, while a walkout jersey sells for $80. Additionally, the available colors are limited. The fight shorts are available in the most variety of colors (green, blue, white, red, yellow, black, and the champions gold/black). All other items are only available in black, white, or the champions’ yellow and gold.

Fans can purchase personalized walkout hoodies and jerseys or their favorite fighter’s gear for an additional cost. However, don’t get excited if your favorite fighter is newer to the roster. It appears that only ranked fighters and champions are currently available. Fighter gear will set you back $100 for the walkout jersey and $175 for the walkout hoodie. Fans can also purchase champion’s apparel in the champion’s black and gold or in just black or white.

So far, the fans’ reactions are mixed. While some feel the new UFC Venum gear improves the UFC apparel from the previous Reebok offerings, others see little change. Still, others continue to lament that fighters cannot include their sponsors on the kits.

The fight kits will debut this upcoming weekend at UFC on ABC 2.

The Venum era of the UFC starts now.

Although Dana White was adamant that Reebok was good for the UFC, the promotion has switched gears. It now has Venum providing all of the fight kits and gear for its fighters. Venum and the UFC will preview the new fight kits next week ahead of their debut on UFC Fight Night on April 10th.

Fighters have not been shy about airing their grievances with the UFC’s decision to partner with Reebok over the last seven years. Several fighters have been vocal about their disappointment with the compensation they received in fight-week incentive pay. While fighters will still be unable to promote their sponsors during fight week, they will see an increase in wage under the new Venum deal.

During an interview with ESPN, UFC senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Lawrence Epstein provided details of the new pay structure for athletes. He stressed that while the increase is incremental, the Venom deal’s design benefits the fighters more than the organization. “This is not a profit center for us,” Epstein stated. “Whether it’s cash out the door or where it’s product, we’re delivering it to the athletes. All the value is essentially going to them. We’re not really making anything on this. We do feel the look and feel of the product itself is great for the UFC brand, but when it comes to cash, it’s all going to the athletes, whether in actual cash or product.”

The new tiers will see the most significant increases (by percentage) for newer fighters of the promotion:

Number of
Fights
Reebok Compensation (Current) Venum Compensation
(New)
Percentage of
Increase
1-3 $3,500 $4,000 14.3%
4-5 $4,000 $4,500 12.5%
6-10 $5,000 $6,000 20.0%
11-15 $10,000 $11,000 10.0%
16-20 $15,000 $16,000 6.7%
21+ $20,000 $21,000 5.0%
Title Challenge $30,000 $32,000 6.7%
Title Defense $40,000 $42,000 5.0%

Additionally, one significant change will come with the new deal. Fighters will now be required to submit their mouthpieces for inspection a week before their fight. Under the new policy, “Mouthguards may not have any commercially identifiable logos or trademarks other than UFC logos and trademarks; however, athletes’ names, their children’s names, spouse’s name, athletes’ nicknames, country flags, or those approved by UFC and documented in the system and other Unbranded designs may be permitted if approved by UFC.”

Reebok will remain a UFC partner, providing footwear for the athletes for the foreseeable future.
