Former professional boxing world champion, Oscar De La Hoya has admitted that part of his is happy a scheduled fight against former UFC light heavyweight champion failed to come to fruition, revealing how he believes he “dodged a bullet” against the Brazilian.

De La Hoya, a former 11-time world champion across six separate weight classes and the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, was scheduled to fight former UFC champion, Belfort in September of last year in first an exhibition – and then a professional boxing match under the Triller Fight Club banner, however, the week prior to the event, De La Hoya was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19.

Remaining on the September 11. card in Hollywood, Florida – Belfort instead fought former cruiserweight champion, Evander Holyfield, landing a brutally one-sided opening round knockout win over the 59-year-old in less than two minutes of the first frame.

Reflecting on the failed venture to the squared circle against Rio de Janeiro native, Belfort, De La Hoya admitted that he likely dodged a bullet when the matchup failed to materialize.

“I’m glad I didn’t fight this monster of a fighter because he’s (Vitor Belfort) a big guy, and he knows what he’s doing,” Oscar De La Hoya told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “He’s talented. As old as we were, we can still throw punches. We saw it with Evander Holyfield where he knocked him out. I think I dodged a bullet there.”

“I was in great shape, but I have to admit I was lying to myself,” Oscar De La Hoya explained. “When I was sparring, I was getting hit a lot. So I was being stubborn. I was in great shape. My reflexes (were on point), the (training) videos that I posted, they were legit. They were fast, my reflexes were incredible, but when I was sparring, I was getting hit too much.”

Oscar De La Hoya closes the door on his fighting future

De La Hoya further complimented Belfort’s ability inside the squared circle, as well as shutting the proverbial door firmly on his fighting future.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Oscar De La Hoya said. “I’m glad I didn’t fight because obviously he’s a big guy, and he knocked out Evander Holyfield, so everything happens for a reason. I’m glad that I got over (COVID-19), and I didn’t fight, and now I can just sit back and relax and grow some grey hairs promoting fighters. I’m done (fighting). Everything happens for a reason, and I’m glad that I didn’t come back.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)

Oscar De La Hoya is glad his boxing bout against Vitor Belfort never came to fruition in 2021.

De La Hoya and Belfort were set to meet inside the ring back in September of 2021. However, the fight was soon cancelled and never came to be.

Recently, De La Hoya was interviewed and asked about the bout’s cancellation. De La Hoya revealed that he actually caught COVID-19, forcing the fight to be cancelled.

“I actually was one week away, and I got COVID. That was the bottom line. I got COVID, and it got me hard. I was very disappointed, I was destroyed.

“I really wanted to be up in the ring and fight. Boxing is my comfort zone. Being inside the ring, it’s everything I know. So it was a big blow to me because I was in great shape mentally, physically,” De La Hoya said.

The 49-year-old noted that he was destroyed by the cancellation, as he really wanted to compete in boxing, which is his comfort zone.

In hindsight, however, De La Hoya is glad his fight against the former UFC champion didn’t happen, as Belfort had so much of a size advantage that one massive punch could’ve put him in a rough spot.

“Pretty glad it didn’t happen, because who knows what could have happened? I mean one wrong punch, especially against a guy who was weighing in 210 pounds.

“I’ve never even seen that weight, never in my life. Everything happens for a reason, so yeah, but I’ve hung up the gloves,” De La Hoya said.

Prior to the cancellation, De La Hoya hinted at regret for accepting the bout. After he withdrew from the bout due to COVID-19, Belfort’s camp was skeptical of De La Hoya’s diagnosis, believing that he may possibly faked the COVID-19 contraction in order to get out of the fight.

Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya may not attempt a comeback to the ‘sweet science’ after all, following a recent interview.

De La Hoya was supposed to face Vitor Belfort last year in an event held by Triller Fight Club but pulled out of the event after testing positive for COVID-19. He ended up getting a brief hospital stay to help treat his symptoms.

Belfort’s trainer, Derik Santos, questioned the validity of De La Hoya’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

It had been previously reported that Triller had been in talks to re-book the Belfort fight, but it appears that De La Hoya has no intentions of a comeback.

“I can’t imagine myself in the ring anymore. I’m hanging up the gloves for sure and calling it a day,” De La Hoya said in an interview with BoxingScene. “It’s not likely [I will fight again]. I’m not feeling it. I went through so much in training. I was on it. When I trained, I left everything and my focus was 100%. It just drained me. I couldn’t handle it. Once I got COVID, I still have problems breathing when I’m running.

“I feel complete now. I have six projects aside from boxing that I’m working on right now that are huge – mega. I’ve refocused. I have the energy. I have a woman by my side who makes me feel like King Kong. It’s motivating. It really is. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with Golden Boy and my personal brand. Things are moving in the right direction. I’m really excited about it.”

De La Hoya last fought in the ring against Manny Pacquiao in 2008. He would lose the fight after his corner stopped the action in the later rounds.

De La Hoya earned multiple boxing world titles and fought some of the greatest in the sport’s history, including Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014.

Do you think Oscar De La Hoya will fight again?

Vitor Belfort, Tommy Fury

Former UFC champion Vitor Belfort wants a shot at Tommy Fury for his next test in the boxing ring, and he thinks he can take away his undefeated record.

Belfort passed his last test in the ring with flying colors, in a first-round finish over heavyweight legend Evander Holyfield. He was originally supposed to face Oscar De La Hoya before De La Hoya pulled out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Belfort is slated to face former boxing champion Chad Dawson next at Triller Triad Combat 2 on Feb. 26. After that, he wants a shot at Fury, as he said in a recent interview with TheScore.

“I will fight him anytime,” Belfort said. “Tommy Fury, it’s a shame you were going to fight Jake Paul. Fighting a YouTuber is a shame. (Paul) is a piece of shit. Not as a person – as a fighter.

“Tommy Fury, I’m up to the challenge. Let’s make this duel.”

Vitor Belfort Is Looking To Continue His Rise In This Latest Combat Chapter

Fury was supposed to take on Jake Paul last month before withdrawing on short notice with a rib injury. Paul went on to knock out former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in the sixth round in their high-stakes rematch.

Following his win over Holyfield, Belfort also called out both Logan and Jake Paul for a fight. There had been some preliminary talks for Belfort to face Logan next, but negotiations never materialized.

There are plenty of other matchups that also make sense for Belfort’s next few boxing fights. There has been some interest in a boxing rematch between Anderson Silva and Belfort, years after they competed for the middleweight title in the UFC.

Regardless, Belfort wants big-name opponents for this new boxing journey, and Fury is a name that could make sense for him next.

Vitor Belfort has his eyes on Tommy Fury next time out.

Belfort is set to return at Triller Triad Combat 2 on February 26 against Chad Dawson. The former UFC champion is coming off the TKO win over Evander Holyfield in an exhibition bout in Triller Fight Club Legends 2 back in September.

Now, even before he returns against Dawson, Belfort has his eyes on Fury and wants that fight next. He believes it makes sense as he doesn’t think the Brit should be focused on fighting Jake Paul. Instead, Belfort says Fury should want to face a real fighter.

“I will fight him anytime,” Belfort told theScore. “Tommy Fury, it’s a shame you were going to fight Jake Paul. Fighting a YouTuber is a shame. (Paul) is a piece of shit. Not as a person —as a fighter. Tommy Fury, I’m up to the challenge,” he continued. “Let’s make this duel.”

Fury, of course, was scheduled to fight Paul in the main event of a Showtime boxing pay-per-view card in December. However, the undefeated boxer was forced out of the bout with broken ribs and an infection.

Since he pulled out, Tommy Fury campaigned to get the fight rebooked, but Belfort clearly hopes that doesn’t happen. Although Belfort is a former UFC champion, Fury would get more eyes on him if he were to box Paul and defeat him. It would also be a bigger payday for the Brit.

At this time, it does seem unlikely Fury would box Belfort, as the Brazilian has his own fight on February 26. Should he win, then perhaps it might make sense, but Fury has yet to respond.

What do you make of Vitor Belfort calling out Tommy Fury and who do you think would win a fight between the two?
