Vitor Belfort sees no issue with his win over Evander Holyfield.

In the main event of Triller Fight Club Legends 2, Belfort was supposed to fight Oscar De La Hoya but De La Hoya tested positive for COVID-19 and was replaced by Holyfield. The news surprised many and after the public workouts happened, many thought the 58-year-old shouldn’t be allowed to box but the fight happened and Belfort scored a first-round TKO.

After the fight, many criticized Belfort and the promotion for allowing this fight to happen. Yet, the former UFC light heavyweight champion sees no issue with it.

“He tried to rip my head off, he knocked himself out at one point and got such a cross that he fell to the canvas by himself. If I don’t dodge my head would be rolling on the floor,” Belfort said to AG Fight.

“Then people criticize that I was very, very roasted. I’m not worried about that. I beat the most powerful heavyweight in history, who beat Mike Tyson. Unfortunately, the ‘haters’ will be there to criticize you. If I fight a guy over 50 is it worth it? If I win they will criticize. The animal was too strong, he is a horse and he was boxing well and I was very precise. Nobody talks about my accuracy, how good I was. They talk about how bad he was. He wasn’t bad, I demolished him.”

In the fight, Vitor Belfort came out aggressive and rocked Evander Holyfield early. He then dropped him, and after he hurt him, the Brazilian said his instincts of going for the kill took over.

“I was cautious, I started slowly, but when he came up with it, I had my time. When you smell blood, it’s time to hunt. It would be unnecessary (if the referee lets it go on longer), given his age,” Belfort explained. “He took a lot of uppercut blow to the chin. The first one got really strong. Then there were other blows. But as many people think they are the other’s head, so let it die. It’s part of it.”

Belfort is now expected to box De La Hoya on Thanksgiving weekend on Triller once again, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Former UFC Champion Vitor Belfort fired back at people who were quick to criticize his boxing match with all-time great Evander Holyfield. The Triller event was heavily criticized by analysts and pundits across the sport as well as current and former fighters.

Holyfield was finished in the first round by Belfort with strikes and plenty of people were critical of the sanctioning of a 58 year old Holyfield getting in the ring with someone of Belfort’s stature.

Belfort spoke to AG Fight in a recent interview, where he blasted the critics of the fight.

“He (Holyfield) tried to rip my head off, he knocked himself out at one point and got such a cross that he fell to the canvas by himself. If I don’t dodge my head would be rolling on the floor. Then people criticize that I was very, very roasted. He wasn’t bad, I demolished him,” Belfort said.

“I was cautious, I started slowly, but when he came up with it, I had my time. When you smell blood, it’s time to hunt. It would be unnecessary (if the referee lets it go on longer), given his age. He took a lot of uppercut blow to the chin. The first one got really strong. Then there were other blows. But as many people think they are the other’s head, so let it die. It’s part of it.”

While Belfort has a good point, the critics of the Triller event and a fight with a 58 year old Holyfield were rightly justified as he looked old and slow, and someone that already has had significant damage to the head in his career.

Add MMA legend, Wanderlei Silva, to the list of former MMA standouts making a transition to the world of boxing, as Silva is also eyeing a rematch with Vitor Belfort 23 years after they squared off at UFC Brazil in 1998.

Silva hasn’t competed in MMA since 2018 after getting knocked out by fellow UFC colleague Rampage Jackson at Bellator 206. Before that, he lost to longtime rival Chael Sonnen at Bellator 180. Belfort is coming off of a knockout win over heavyweight boxing legend Evander Holyfield just weeks ago.

Silva and Belfort have quite the history together after they coached a season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil back in 2012, and before that competing against one another in a fight that Belfort won by a first-round knockout. Silva watched Belfort’s recent bout with Holyfield and wants another shot at his former UFC rival.

“It would be a super interesting fight and most of all, it’s a fight that everyone wants to see,” Silva told AG Fight. “Everyone wants to see me smack around Belfort. I’m sure boxing will be different. I have very good boxing, I’ve been training boxing for a long time and I’m sure my boxing can surprise everyone.”

“I’m interested, getting ready. After this new trend, the legends face each other, in a rule a little easier than boxing, because you don’t need to train jiu-jitsu, takedowns. It’s a little more ‘light’. So I’m keeping in shape because I know that when the time and the right event come.”

It sounds like Belfort doesn’t plan on stopping boxing anytime soon, especially after he called out the controversial YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul and also called for a fight with Anderson Silva down the line. Silva could be the right opponent for Belfort as he weighs his options.

Triller Defends Belfort vs. Holyfield, Expects Holyfield To Box Again

Triller CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh has no problem with his fight booking of Vitor Belfort vs. Evander Holyfield despite the result.

Holyfield stepped up on short notice and throughout fight week many began to get worried for the 58-year-old due to his open workout and his interviews. Then, in the fight, Belfort blitzed Holyfield and rocked him several times, and even dropped him once before the ref stopped the fight. The fight was a complete beatdown, but for Kavanaugh:

“If you talk to Holyfield, what the world perceived happened didn’t happen. Vitor apparently stepped on his foot — which I haven’t seen the footage yet — which made him trip, and that’s why it looked like he fell. He swung really hard, which we all know he did. And that was the knockout swing,” Kavanaugh said on MMAFighting’s MMA Hour (via BloodyElbow). “Had he connected with Vitor, Vitor would probably still be in the hospital today. And missed, which put him into the ropes because he swung so hard. And Vitor came back aggressively. But Holyfield is notoriously a slow starter. As he said, his strategy is ‘Let me get hit, let me feel how he punches, and then I’ll come out with my returns.’ The stoppage, in his opinion, was the problem, because he’s like ‘I would’ve come back, and I knew what I was doing.’”

After Triller’s event ended, many fans and media made it clear they didn’t think Evander Holyfield should box again. However, for Ryan Kavanaugh, he says the former heavyweight champ will likely box again and they are looking at better-suited opponents for him for his next bout.

“I think Holyfield will end up fighting someone hopefully people see is better-suited (for him), whether it’s Tyson or someone like that.”

As for Vitor Belfort, Kavanaugh revealed Triller is looking to rebook the original fight of Belfort vs. Oscar De La Hoya for Thanksgiving weekend.

Triller still intends to host a show with boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, and it looks like the fight with Vitor Belfort is targeted to happen on Thanksgiving weekend.

The fight ended fast with Belfort and De La Hoya’s replacement, Evander Holyfield. The 44-year old Belfort blasted “The Real Deal” until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Despite it being an exhibition bout, it seemed Belfort was keen on making a statement with his first-round demolition of Holyfield.

MMA reporter Shaheen Al-Shatti brought attention to the fact that Triller spokesperson Ryan Kavanaugh expressed a desire to match the two back together. Originally scheduled to fight on the Triller boxing event on Sept. 11 with Belfort, De La Hoya caught COVID-19, and he was forced out of the bout.

“Ryan Kavanaugh tells @arielhelwani that Triller is in talks to rebook Belfort vs. De La Hoya for Thanksgiving weekend. The event is tentatively being called “The Revenge,” with Oscar seeking revenge on Vitor for the Holyfield fight. #themmahour” Shaheen Al-Shatti posted.

The new event being targeted between Belfort and De La Hoya will reportedly be named “The Revenge.” With a tentative date already set up for Thanksgiving weekend in November, it seems Kavanaugh is adamant about hosting the original fight that was planned for Triller. If and when Oscar De La Hoya does step back into the ring, he will have the chance to better represent boxing after his replacement was unable to do so against “The Phenom.”

Oscar De La Hoya last fought in a boxing match and lost to Manny Pacquiao in 2008. After retiring, the fight with Vitor Belfort will be his first in nearly thirteen years if Triller is able to put all of the pieces back in place.

Jake Paul was not a fan of the Vitor Belfort vs. Evander Holyfield spectacle.

Belfort went one-on-one with Holyfield in a boxing match on Sept. 11. Holyfield is 58 years old and looked every bit of it. Belfort ended up knocking down the “Real Deal” on his way to a first-round TKO win.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting’s The MMA Hour, Paul said he feels Belfort disrespected the sport of boxing with his matchup against Holyfield.

“Look, he beat up an old man. He disrespected the sport of boxing in my opinion. Holyfield is a legend, but he shouldn’t be fighting somebody that’s in there early 40s. It should be Mike Tyson vs. Holyfield or something like that. It was just sad to see,  the whole entire thing.”

After the fight, Belfort issued a $30 million challenge to Paul. The popular YouTuber responded, saying that Belfort simply doesn’t have the name recognition to warrant such a bout.

“I mean, it’s a bit ridiculous. I mean, there’s better people out there. I mean, like you were saying, Vitor is not that big of a name. He just isn’t. He’s not even as big of a name as Tyron [Woodley]. So I’m trying to get bigger with each one of these fights. I’m trying to have more of a challenge. And I think Vitor is a lot easier of a fight than Tyron. He’s older, he’s on steroids, and such. But that doesn’t really excite me that much. The money excites me. If they would put the money into a bank account, an escrow account and show proof, then maybe that’s where the conversation could start. But it’s not as big of a fight as the 10 other people that are calling me out or that even we’re already talking to.”

Triller promoted Belfort vs. Holyfield. The company had promoted two of Paul’s bouts. Jake Paul ended up signing with Showtime Sports for his matchup Tyron Woodley. Paul won that fight via split decision.
