Prochazka Oezdemir

Jiri Prochazka is set to make his debut next month.

The former RIZIN light heavyweight champion signed with the UFC earlier this year as many mixed martial arts fans were eager to see how he would fare with the Las Vegas-based promotion.

They won’t have to wait much longer as a debut against former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir is reportedly being finalized for July 11. That means it will likely be taking place on Fight Island.

“Breaking: UFC finalizing Volkan Oezdemir (@volkan_oezdemir) vs. former Rizin champion Jiri Prochazka on July 11,” ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported on Monday.

Prochazka, 27, holds a 26-3 record and has won his last 10 fights. “Denisa” last knocked out UFC veteran CB Dollaway at RIZIN 20 back in December. He later revealed that Bellator also made him an offer but that competing in the UFC was his dream all along.

“Yes, we talked to Bellator about the Ryan Bader fight but the UFC was always a bigger target of mine, so we signed with them instead,” he said in March. “The UFC approached me after my fight against Dollaway and the talks were completed very quickly. They made us a really good offer so we took it right away. Since I began my MMA career eight years ago, being in the UFC was always my dream.”

Oezdemir, meanwhile, is on a two-fight winning streak following victories over Ilir Latifi and Aleksandar Rakic.

Aleksandar Rakic felt he did enough to get the win over Volkan Oezdemir.

The two hard-hitting light heavyweights met in the UFC Busan co-headliner this past Saturday. After a back-and-forth bout that lasted the entire 15 minutes, it was Oezdemir who was awarded the split decision victory.

It wasn’t a robbery by any means as it was a very close fight. However, Rakic — who suffered his first UFC loss in the process — still felt he was the “real winner” on the night.

Here is what he had to say in an Instagram post where he uploaded pictures from the fight, including one with him raising his hands before the contest:

“That is the feeling what i have right NOW!! He won on the papers but we all know who the REAL winner is. No Excuses i will work my ass off to show my fans what I am capable of. ???

The Austrian is 4-1 in the UFC now, but given that he’s still only 27, the future remains bright for Rakic as he will be looking to bounce back.

What did you think of the split decision verdict? Did you have Oezdemir winning? Or did you agree with Rakic that he won?

Volkan Oezdemir has made it known he wants to rematch Dominick Reyes after the two fight at UFC London in March. There, it was the American getting his hand raised by split-decision in a fight many thought the Swiss-native had won.

Although he lost the fight, Oezdemir says he was the one who did more damage and should have been rewarded the win.

“Everybody knows I won that fight, and I feel the same,” Oezdemir said on the ESPN+ post-fight show (h/t MMA Junkie). “I felt it during the fight, him getting weaker and losing all his confidence.

“It’s about damage and points. I think I took a lot of his soul and his will to fight in the fight. You score points by touching the guy, for me, it’s nothing. This is not boxing. This is a real fight. You need to smash the guy.”

Now, after a controversial loss, he wants to run it back as he says he did not fight his game plan and still won that fight. He was too conserved in that scrap and wasn’t fighting like the Oezdemir that was knocking everyone out.

“I tried to be too cautious, and I know now I’ll do stuff differently,” he said. “I have to have a good victory and finish him out cold.”

Ultimately, if Volkan Oezdemir had his way, he would be fighting Dominick Reyes next. But, would be fine fighting Jan Blachowicz.

Who do you think Volkan Oezdemir should fight next?
