Wang Cong sends warning to Valentina Shevchenko after Noche UFC title win: 'I'm coming'

Former foe of newly-minted flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko has once more taken aim at the decorated favorite, with Wang Cong warning the Krgysztan native she was “coming” for a title rematch sooner than later.

Shevchenko, who returned overnight in the co-main event of Noche UFC at the Las Vegas Sphere, managed to reclaim the undisputed flyweight throne in her trilogy clash with opponent, Alexa Grasso — showing off her immense wrestling and grappling skills en route to a one-sided unanimous decision win.

And avenging a prior submission loss to the Mexican back in March of last year, Shevchenko — who took the defending champion the distance at last year’s Noche UFC premiere to a draw, managed to reclaim the flyweight crown to kickstart her second reign over the 125lbs pack.

Already receiving a warning from the above-mentioned Wang Cong — the Chinese contender made good on her Octagon debut earlier this year against Brazilian foe, Victoria Leonardo, turning in a Performance of the Night bonus in a one-sided first round knockout win in the opening minute of their Apex facility pairing.

On social media in the aftermath of Shevchenko’s win, Dailan native, Cong poked fun at the former — whom she holds a kickboxing win over, claiming she would work her way to the title in order to rematch her this time inside the Octagon.

Wang Cong on Valentina Shevchenko rematch: 'I can beat her any time'

While former undisputed flyweight titleholder, Valentina Shevchenko is gearing up for a title rematch return next month against Alexa Grasso in their trilogy clash at Noche UFC — a former kickboxing foe of the Krgysztan native, Wang Cong is confident of landing another win over the decorated striker if they share the Octagon down the line.

Cong, a former Kunlun Fight Legend of Mulan tournament victor, made her debut under the banner of the UFC over the course of this weekend on a Vegas 96 card, landing in the promotion with aplomb.

Stopping Brazilian opponent, Victoria Leonardo, Cong landed a stunning opening round one-punch knockout win inside an opening minute — earning herself a Performance of the Night bonus to boot.

Entering the Octagon off the back of an impressive win during an appearance on ‘Road to UFC’, Cong had previously scored a unanimous decision win over former undisputed flyweight champion, Shevchenko back in 2016, over the course of three rounds.

And drawing obvious links to a rematch with Shevchenko under the banner of the promotion given their prior history outside of the Octagon — Cong remains confident of taking a second career win over the former champion in combat sports, claiming she would stop Shevchenko any time she likes.

“You guys only know i beat (Valentina) Shevchenko in kickboxing,” Wang Cong told assembled media after her win at UFC Vegas 96. “But you don’t know I’m a sambo world champion, a boxing world champion, and a kickboxing world champion.”

“I think comparing Valentina Shevchenko to me is that she has more experience,” Wang Cong explained. “But I took some time to compete in boxing. I believe my striking is better than hers. If she takes the fight, [I can beat her] any time.”

For Shevchenko, the former flyweight champion takes on the above-mentioned, Grasso in the co-main event of Noche UFC next month — as part of a title fight doubleheader at the Las Vegas Sphere.

‘The Joker’ Wang Cong is a veteran striker in the world of kickboxing. Throughout her kickboxing career, she has victories over notable athletes such as Sarel de Jong and Valentina Shevchenko. Plus, she has a draw against all-time great Tiffany van Soest. Wang Cong was also a world champion in Kunlun.

Since switching to MMA, she has gone a perfect 6-0 thus far, winning the majority of her fights by way of submission or KO/TKO. She wants to face Shevchenko in the UFC. After her most recent win, she said:

Wang Cong brought a vicious beginning to UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Borralho, as well as her Octagon career, thanks to a brutal knockout to claim victory in just 62 seconds in the card’s opening bout.
