For most fighters, losing their next fight after losing a championship bout would mean that they likely would drop down a few slots on the main card.

Matt Serra lost his belt to Georges St-Pierre, then lost to Matt Hughes and got another chance to redeem himself against Frank Trigg. Chuck Liddell lost his belt to Quinton Jackson, then lost to Keith Jardine and was given Wanderlei Silva in his next fight. Evan Tanner lost his belt to Rich Franklin, then lost to David Loiseau and was given Justin Levens as a chance at redemption.

Then there’s Thales Leites, who loses via unanimous decision to Anderson Silva and subsequently drops a close split decision to Alessio Sakara and he’s given his walking papers and has to fight the unemployment line.

Jens Pulver said in May that he doesn’t have a choice; he’s got to fight. Released by Zuffa last month following his fifth straight WEC loss, it didn’t take Pulver long to find his next match.

Pulver (22-13-1), the first UFC lightweight champion, will face Diego Garijo (4-1) on the War on the Mainland debut event Aug. 14 in Irvine, Calif.

Pulver will try to have his hand raised for the first time since beating Cub Swanson in his WEC debut at WEC 31 in December 2007. Since then, losses to Urijah Faber (twice), Leonard Garcia, Josh Grispi and Javier Vazquez chased him from the WEC. His last four losses have been in the first round with three straight by submission. Pulver is one of just two fighters to beat former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn at 155 pounds. The other is Frankie Edgar, who beat Penn for the title in April.

The main event features another former UFC champion, Tim Sylvia, against former UFC, Strikeforce and Affliction heavyweight Paul Buentello. Sylvia will be fighting for the first time since submitting five-time World’s Strongest Man winner Mariusz Pudzianowski with strikes at a Moosin event in Massachusetts last month.

(Does this smell bad to you?)

Embattled former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho sat down with TATAME’s Guilherme Cruz and the Brazilian says he’s fed up with the amount of disrespect he has been shown by MMA media and fans and that he deserves more reverence for what he has done in his 10-year career.

“I’d like a little more support, because the critics are so numerous that it’s discouragement. An athlete holding a professional record of 20 wins and only one loss can’t be disrespected.”

The 32-year-old has brought the brunt of criticism onto himself.

(Retirement is for quitters.)

A new report on Sherdog passes along more details on that "War on the Mainland" MMA/boxing hybrid event (August 14th; Irvine, Ca.) that will host Jens Pulver‘s first post-WEC appearance. Following five straight losses in the WEC, Lil’ Evil will try to re-build against Diego Garijo, a 4-1 prospect from The Arena, who hasn’t competed since his insane brawl against Saad Awad at Bellator X last year. So good luck Jens, because this kid can really take a beating.

Though it originally appeared that Tim Sylvia would miss this event due to a foot injury suffered in the Maruisz Pudzianowski fight, Sherdog reports that Timmy will actually be headlining the card against recent UFC castoff Paul Buentello. Speaking of UFC castoffs, former UFC #1 middleweight contender Thales Leites will do battle with Hawaiian vet Falaniko Vitale at "War on the Mainland," Jason Lambert locks horns with old-schooler Allan Goes, and Terry Martin meets Jorge "The Naked Man" Ortiz.

If you’d like to check out the terrible-looking website for the event, go to www.waronthemainland.com. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

CagePotato.com has been able to confirm with a source close to the show the participation of several former UFC and PRIDE veterans in an August 14 hybrid boxing and MMA card in San Diego, California.

War on the Mainland’s self-titled event will take place at the San Diego Sports Arena and will feature Murilo Bustamante, Thales Leites, Alan Goes,  Pedro Rizzo, Jens Pulver and Jason Lambert among others. Rizzo was originally scheduled to take on former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia for the WOTM heavyweight title, but is currently waiting on another opponent as Sylvia injured his foot in his May 21 Moosin bout with Mariusz "The World’s Strongest Man" Pudzianowski.

According to the poster for the event, there will be two more "MMA title fights" on the card, but the weight classes and bout participants have yet to be announced.
