Former UFC Champion Explains Starvation and Abstinence to Unleash the Caveman Mindset

Former two-division UFC champion recalled the days when he’d have to starve himself ahead of a fight.

Becoming a mixed martial artist is no easy task. Aside from the years of dedication, endless hours of training, and the dietary discipline necessary to succeed, there also comes the task of making weight which often sees fighters significantly cutting down their food intake and dehydrating themselves to the point of exhaustion just before a fight.

Some fighters struggle so severely that they wind up fainting while trying to climb on or off the scale.

Taking away ‘the pleasures of life’ turned the UFC Hall of Famer into a different man

During a recent episode of his Funky and The Champ podcast with Ben Askren, ‘DC’ looked back on some of his more difficult weight cuts and how the lack of food and abstinence from intimacy would make him feel like someone straight out of the Paleolithic era.

016 Daniel Cormier

“I tried to recreate that caveman sh*t in me every fight,” Cormier began. “Listen, I’m abstaining from sex for like a month, and then don’t eat like, literally don’t eat. So, main event usually walks out at 10 o’clock at night. Don’t eat past 2 PM in the afternoon. Starving. Like, literally just starving. Because when you’re hungry, right, your mind goes to a place. Like, if I had to go and kill something to eat right now, I would.

And obviously, we’re not at that level of hunger, but it’s like if I need to go… Yes, right. You can put yourself almost in a caveman mindset, to where you’re like taking all the—the—the pleasures of life that we as men love so much—food, you know, women, those things—you take it away from yourself.

And then by the time you get in there with this dude, you’re like, “Yo, you’re the reason that I didn’t get to do this. You’re the reason that I’m hungry.” Seriously.”

Fortunately, those days are long gone for the former champ-champ.

Darren Till’s Nutritionist Speculates On His Weight Class

What weight class will Darren Till be fighting at in the future?

The post Darren Till’s Nutritionist Speculates On His Weight Class appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Recent title challenger Darren Till may be unsure what division he will be fighting in moving forward, but his nutritionist, Eoghan Gallagher, believes “The Gorilla” can fight at 170 pounds for a long time to come.

Till hit the scales the Friday morning (Sept 7, 2018) before his title fight against Tyron Woodley at a lean 169 pounds. The gentleman responsible for Till’s most recent weight cut is his nutritionist Gallagher.

Although Till has the final say in where he will compete in the future, Gallagher believes the Liverpudlian can fight at welterweight as long as he wants to.

“[The weight cut] did go extremely well in the end,” Gallagher told Peter Carroll on the latest episode of Eurobash. “I was very confident [he would make weight] and I think he can make 170 with ease for years to come, it’s just all about what his preference is moving forward.”

Despite Till’s past issues making weight in the UFC Gallagher believes that with the proper plan in place Till should have no issues what so ever hitting the 170-pound mark.

“We are absolutely confident that when you put in a system that looks to achieve goals over a certain period of time and don’t leave everything to the last minute, like a lot of people do, [Till can make the weight],” he said. “I only got to work with Darren [for a short period of time]. I met him and 20 days later he was 169 pounds, which was significantly less than what I got him at.”

Gallagher is confident that the more time he can spend with Till the easier future weight cuts will be for the Brit. Gallagher will be spending time with Till in Liverpool prior to his next fight.

“Ideally, what I’d like to do moving forward is spend six to eight weeks with him in Liverpool in a much longer camp than this one, obviously this was a short-notice fight. I’d look to get the weight down earlier, get him a bit slimmer — a little bit less aggressive than I had to do it this time. I’d get the weight down slowly, making the cut in the end extremely easy.”

“This cut was super easy. The actual water cut itself did not take a significant amount of time. When he jumped on the scales and we saw 170, his teammate Mike Grundy and I were there, we were all together and it was a really emotional moment for us. We just hugged it out and we were like, ‘Wow’. Absolutely, Darren can make 170 with ease with the systems that we have in place,” he said.

Nicco Montano Claims Valentina Shevchenko Is Scared To Fight Her

Nicco Montano has heard enough of Valentina Shevchenko’s criticism after UFC 228.

Valentina Shevchenko has been very vocal about the events that transpired at UFC 228 fight week.

Initially, Shevchenko was expected to co-main event the pay-per-view (PPV) opposite Nicco Montano for the UFC women’s flyweight title. Unfortunately, Montano suffered complications during her weight-cut and was subsequently hospitalized.

She was deemed medically unfit to compete and removed from the card. Shevchenko, however, wasn’t buying it. She believes Montano was searching for a way out of their fight all along.

Shevchenko even foreshadowed these events happening with some comments during media day. “The Bullet,” said she’ll believe the fight is happening when Montano actually makes the walk to the Octagon. As we all know, that walk never happened.

Montano has finally offered her side of the story in a recent interview on “The MMA Hour.” She said that she believes Shevchenko was hoping for something like this because she’s scared to fight someone like her (quotes via MMA Mania):

“I think she lives in la la land for a reason. I think she really wanted that to happen, unless she’s another Mrs. Cleo and has a (psychic) job, because she’s good at that.

“But I think she was hoping for it. I think she’s a little scared to fight somebody like me. I think deep down she was hoping this fight was not going to happen so that she could have more ammo to be a cyber bully and she wouldn’t have to face me in the Octagon.”

As for Shevchenko, she’ll now be fighting for the 125-pound title after Montano was stripped.

UFC President Dana White teased he already has a name in mind for the match-up. Early speculation suggests that name is former 115-pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Report: Max Holloway Tied For ‘Biggest Weight Cut’ Nutritionist Has Ever Seen

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway may usually fight at 145 pounds, but his nutritionist says he’s still cutting a massive amount of weight to make the lightweight limit less than a week away from UFC 223.

George Lockhart, who’s working with both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Holloway to make weight for this Saturday’s main event from Brooklyn, revealed via Bloody Elbow that Holloway’s current weight makes him tied with the biggest weight cut Lockhart has ever done:

“I saw [Max’s manager Brian Butler’s] number show up on my phone, and he was like, “Hey man, do you think you can get Max down to 155?” and he gave me his weight. I was like, “Uhhh, give me a sec.” I had to call Tyler Minton [who is part of the Lockhart & Leith team], who worked with Max for his last fight, and we were running numbers back and forth, and seeing where he previously was fight week.

Then I had to talk to Max and ask him what he had been eating, if he had been training. God’s honest truth, I was hoping he was eating crap, because if he was eating crap and we cleaned it up, we could drop some weight really quick, but the kid has been eating decently. I found out his body fat percentage and worked out how much water he had to lose.

This is literally tied with the biggest cut I’ve ever done. It’s the exact same number as the biggest cut that I’ve ever done in my life.“

Holloway is actually cutting 10 less pounds than he usually does when he meets the featherweight limit. Obviously, he didn’t have time to properly prepare for the out, as Nurmagomedov’s original opponent Tony Ferguson pulled out just six days from fight night.

Will this massive weight cut hurt Holloway’s chances on Saturday? Or does this mean he will be bigger than folks expected him to be come fight night?

The California State Athletic Commission has recommended four UFC fighters to move up a weight class following UFC Fresno earlier this last month.

Marlon Moraes, Iuri Alcantara, Davi Ramos and Luke Sanders, all of whom competed on the Fresno card, were all told to move up a division, as all four men fought at more than 10 percent of the contracted fight weight.

The UFC and necessary governing bodies have implemented such plans due to recent issues with dehydration and drastic weight cuts, which inevitably affects fighters’ stamina and overall performance.

The CSAC says they will no longer grant licenses to the above-stated fighters to fight at the weight classes they are cutting so much weight to get to, meaning said fighters will either have to go up a weight class or diet and manage their weight better to stay within the 10 percent limit.

Moraes scores an emphatic knockout over Aljamain Sterling in just over a minute into their bantamweight encounter, a victory that would have put the Brazilian in title contention prior to this revelation. Now, Moraes will have to consider moving up to featherweight in order to be properly licensed to fight.

The CSAC says they will not grant these men licenses at their current weight classes “without extensive medical documentation from a licensed physician certifying the weight class is appropriate and verified by CSAC physicians.”

Moraes gained over 14 percent back following weigh-ins, coming in 155 pounds for a 135 pound contest. Alcantara and Sanders also gained nearly 20 pounds from weigh-ins to fight day. Meanwhile, Ramos went from 155.8 pounds to a whopping 179, a 15 percent increase in weight from weigh-ins to fight night.
