UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang has shared she would like to face Rose Namajunas next.
Speaking to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Zhang shared that while she didn’t have any fight booked she wanted the former champion next.
“My preference is to fight Rose because I believe she is the highest level and most-skilled martial artist outside of myself in the division. She would be a good challenge for me.”
The champion recently defended her belt against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in February, edging her out in a decision after a five-round war that would seem to be a strong fight of the year contender.
Rose has not competed since she lost her title to Jessica Andrade back at UFC 237 in 2019. The two were scheduled to rematch at UFC 249 in April until a family member of Rose’s passed away from coronavirus. Due to this, Namajunas withdrew from the fight.
Taking to twitter ESPN’s Brett Okamoto shared that he had spoken to UFC President Dana White who intends to rebook the matchup between Namajunas and Andrade.
“Per Dana White (@danawhite), the fight he’s still trying to make for Rose is Jessica Andrade II. But he said he needs to talk to her personally and make sure she’s comfortable under the current conditions.”
Shevchenko was initially booked to defend her title against Joanne Calderwood in June before pulling from the bout due to an injury. Shevchenko shared she is expecting an august return against Calderwood as previously booked.
At this stage, it is unclear who Zhang will face in her next bout however or when the champion will make her return to the octagon.

Zhang Looking To Become Two-Division Champ
UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang is looking to add another strap to her collection.
Zhang successfully defended her title after a 25-minute war with Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 back in March in what many regard to be greatest female mixed martial arts fight of all time.
Having already become the UFC’s first champion from China, that win further solidified Zhang as a household name back home — so much so that fans are now able to recognize her even with protective gear on.
“When I came back to China last month, I was recognized by fans in the (Tianjin) airport, which was amazing because I was wrapped in a protective suit,” she said in a recent conference call (via The Straits Times).
“Now even when I go running outside, I am recognized as well. I feel very good about this and I am glad to see more and more people get to know me and the sport of MMA.”
Zhang is looking to further challenge herself.
Although she currently boasts of just one title defense, “Magnum” is already targeting a second title in the form of Valentina Shevchenko’s women’s flyweight belt.
“If possible, I also want to challenge in the next weight (division) up and fight with that champion (flyweight title holder Valentina Shevchenko),” Zhang added.
It’s not the first time she has spoken of a potential champion vs. champion fight with Shevchenko. Even before her win against Jedrzejczyk, Zhang spoke of wanting that matchup.

The after effects of Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s war with Weili Zhang were hard to take for the former champion.
The pair battled for 25 minutes in a classic at UFC 248 last month with many regarding it as the greatest fight in women’s mixed martial arts history. Unfortunately for Jedrzejczyk, she didn’t come out on top as she lost a narrow split decision to the champion.
To make matters worse, she suffered a huge hematoma on her forehead that continued to swell as the fight went on. It became classic meme material and although she did laugh at some of them afterward, the pain she was in after the fight was a different story.
“They did a small medical procedure on my ear, I had a CAT scan,” Jedrzejczyk said in an interview with SCMP. “I had an ultrasound, I had an X-ray, and honestly, after a fight like this, I felt like every touch from the doctors and nurses, everything was so painful.
“I didn’t want anybody to touch my body, and I felt like my heart was bleeding, like my soul was bleeding.”
Jedrzejczyk has already spoken in the past of the damage she took in the fight. And while she does question how long she wants to remain in the sport, she has no plans to retire as of yet.
“That’s a question I ask myself every day,” she added of retirement. “I’m not getting any younger. I’m only getting older. I took lots of damage in my last fight and I’m really grateful that nothing serious happened to me. It was only bruises. Every next fight is going to be a big risk, and I want to be a mother in the future.
“… If I put on a hell of a performance, a hell of a war, why retire? If I was not training hard, if I was getting knocked out, if I was losing fights like a p****, then I could retire – but I’m a warrior.”
