Now that World Series of Fighting (WSOF) has been rebranded as the Professional Fighters’ League, the former promotion’s most high-profile fighter is finally making his way to the UFC.

According to a report from MMA Junkie, former WSOF lightweight champ Justin Gaethje is currently negotiating with the UFC to joined their talented 155-pound division. An official contract has not been signed; however, a UFC official confirmed the ongoing negotiations. Gaethje’s manager Ali Abdelaziz confirmed the negotiations as well.

Also, an anonymous source from the Professional Fighters League said they would miss Gaethje, but focused more on their upcoming season-style format than “The Highlight’s” absence:

“Professional Fighters League will miss Justin, but the thrill, drama, excitement of the regular season, playoffs and championship is about more than one fighter – and the glory of finding a true champion, and rewarding that champion with $1 million is what we’re really excited about,”

Former WSOF President Ray Sefo wished Gaethje the best on Twitter, but also wanted the focus to be on Professional Fighters League’s ambitious goal of crowning a new $1 million lightweight winner:

Gaethje will leave WSOF as arguably their most dominant fighter, racking up a 17-0 record while mot recently fighting for the promotion where he won the lightweight title in early 2014. He went on to defend that championship five times, with all five wins coming by way of knockout. He also bested former UFC standout Melvin Guillard by decision in a catchweight affair after “The Young Assassin” missed weight.

Possessing absolutely vicious Muay Thai striking, most notably his fight-changing leg kicks, the Trevor Wittman-trained Gaethje should soon enter the stacked UFC lightweight fray where a litany of potentially exciting match-ups wait him.

Who do you want to see ‘The Highlight’ face first?

The name “World Series of Fighting” is no more as the company has rebranded and is now the Professional Fighters League. The new promotion was announced on Wednesday morning and is set to launch in January 2018, per a press release. The promotion is much like the International Fight League as it boasts the fact that it’s the “world’s only mixed martial arts league. Unlike the IFL, the PFL will not consist of teams. The first season will run for ten months and will feature seven weight classes. Officials have yet to comment on which specific weight classes will be featured.

Each fighter will compete in three regular season fights. Those with the best records will move on to a playoff and then the championship round. Each tournament winner in the seven weight classes will be crowned champion and win a one million dollar purse. An additional three million dollars will be shared between other regular season and playoff competitors.

Although the first season will kick off in January, Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting is reporting that the previous promotion (WSOF) will hold at least four more events this year. Those dates for this year are June 30th, September 30th, October 30th and November 4th. The biggest question regarding the new promotion is their TV deal with NBCSN that expires at the end of 2017. The promotion does not currently have a new TV deal in place with the network or any other networks for 2018, which is a big problem. However, the promotion is currently talking with networks including NBC about a potential deal.

It’s unclear what will become of current WSOF champions Blagoy Ivanov (heavyweight), Jon Fitch (welterweight), Justin Gaethje (lightweight), Andre Harrison (featherweight) or Bekbulat Magomedov (bantamweight). It’s also unclear how many current WSOF fighters will be brought over to the new PFL. As of this writing, approximately 100 fighters are under contract with the now former WSOF.

WSOF launched in November 2012 and held 35 events, as recently as last month. Although they signed some known fighters, the promotion was never a big rating success on NBCSN or even when their events aired on NBC.

After vacating his long held World Series of Fighting (WSOF) bantamweight title and entering free agency, Marlon Moraes made it clear that he had interest in signing with the UFC.

It appears as if that deal has now been made official, as MMAFighting.com has reported that Moraes will make his UFC debut on June 3, 2017 at UFC 212 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil against No. 3-ranked Raphael Assuncao.

Moraes has won an incredible 13 straight fights and he also defended his WSOF 135-pound title five consecutive times, with four of those victories coming by way of stoppage. He most recently scored a TKO victory over Josenaldo Silva at WSOF 34 this past December in New York City.

Assuncao, on the other hand, recently got back on track by scoring a split-decision victory over Aljamain Sterling this past January. Prior to that, he had dropped a decision loss to former champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC 200.

UFC 212 is set to be headlined by a featherweight title unification bout between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway.
