Yair Rodriguez has picked up an ankle injury and has been forced to withdraw from his August 29 main event fight against fellow featherweight contender Zabit Magomedsharipov.

The news was first broke by Mexican outlet Milenio and later confirmed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani who also told his social media followers Calvin Kattar has made himself available to fight Zabit on August 29, he wrote.

“Yair Rodriguez is out of the the Aug. 29 main event versus Zabit Magomedsharipov due to an ankle injury, Dana White confirmed fonight. Calvin Kattar, via his manager Tyson Chartier, has agreed to step in on short notice. No word yet on what the UFC plans on doing.”

“Just be to clear here, Kattar offered to step in. UFC hasn’t decided yet what they’ll do with Zabit.”

UFC president Dana White also confirmed Rodriguez is out during his post-fight press conference for the return of the Contender Series.

“He had a high ankle sprain and a fracture,” White said. “He’s out.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Rodrguez last fought at UFC Boston in October 2019. The 27-year-old picked up a unanimous decision win against long-time contender Jeremy Stephens. He holds high profile wins over the likes of Korean Zombie, BJ Penn, Andre Fili and Dan Hooker.

Magomedsharipov has announced himself as one of the best at 145lbs with wins over Calvin Kattar and Jeremey Stephens. His unorthodox style has excited fans during his UFC run and pushed the Russian towards the top of the division.

Kattar is clearly keen on another shot at Magomedsharipov after running him close when they first fought at UFC Moscow in November last year. The 32-year-old is riding hight after beating Dan Ige over five rounds. He’ll be confident he can do the same against Zabit who has shown signs of gas tank issues throughout his UFC run.

Should Calvin Kattar replace Yair Rodriguez and fight Zabit Magomedsharipov on August 29?

Two years later, on the third attempt, this fight will still take place.

Magomedsharipov (18-1) is the No. 3 ranked featherweight in the UFC. The 29-year-old Russian is riding a 14-fight win streak overall and he has a perfect 6-0 record in the UFC. He holds some major victories over the likes of Calvin Kattar, Jeremy Stephens, and Sheymon Moraes.

Rodriguez (13-2, 1 NC) is the No. 5 ranked featherweight in the UFC. The 27-year-old Mexican is a former winner of The Ultimate Fighter and he is 8-1, 1 NC overall in the UFC with huge wins over Jeremy Stephens, Chan Sung Jung, BJ Penn, Andre Fili, and Dan Hooker. Rodriguez is currently on a three-fight unbeaten streak and has not lost in over three years since a TKO loss to Frankie Edgar in May 2017.

It seems as if Zabit will be the favorite going into this huge bout, but could easily be a pick em. The winner could very well go on to face featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, especially if they win in spectacular fashion.

Certainly some interesting scenarios in the stacked Featherweight division.

Who do you think would win Zabit vs Yair?

Alexander Volkanovski: Korean Zombie Or Zabit Magomedsharipov Likely Next

Alexander Volkanovski

UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski recently talked about potential frontrunners for the next shot at his featherweight world title.

The champ recently sat down and spoke with Sky Sports Radio where he was asked about who could potentially be next in line for a title shot,

“Well, there’s a few. We got like probably four guys that are like all in the same boat, they’re all probably one win away from being the No. 1 contender. They’re all like just there but they just need to have that fight and everybody is going to be screaming their name. Now that I got the win, let the division play out, then hopefully by the end of the year they got that No. 1 contender,” Volkanovski said.

“But right now there’s a couple of frontrunners, maybe Zombie and Zabit, I’d say they’re probably the frontrunners. If they get a win they’ll be clear ahead of the No. 1 contenders and I look forward to taking them on.”

Volkanovski most recently barely edged Max Holloway by split decision a few weeks ago at UFC 251.

While The Korean Zombie is set to fight Brian Ortega and Magomedshairpov is supposed to fight Yair Rodriguez later this summer. Those are the four men who Volkanovski believes are next in line for his belt, as well as Calvin Kattar.

The featherweight title picture is very crowded and only time will tell before we see who emerges as the top contender.

Who do you think emerges at the next Featherweight title challenger? Korean Zombie, Ortega, Zabit, Rodriguez or Kattar?

Featherweight contenders Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez will meet at an event on August 29 according to a report from Russian journalist Igor Lazorin who wrote the following on social media.

“Fight: Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Yair Rodriguez should be held on August 29! The winner will become a contender for the UFC champion title! What are your forecasts? Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Yair Rodriguez set to 29 Aug! Winner will fight for UFC title.”

Magomedsharipov is currently 6-0 inside the UFC and his winning streak stretches 14 fights. The 29-year-old Russian captured and defended the ACB title to earn his shot inside the octagon. Once there he has proved to be one of the most exciting prospects in MMA. Magomedsharipov has beaten the likes of Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar to establish himself as a top contender. A win over Rodriguez in this one could well put him next in line for a featherweight title shot.

Rodriguez has been exciting inside the UFC but it hasn’t always gone his way. The Mexican holds several high-profile victories over the likes of Chan Sung Jung, Jeremy Stephens, BJ Penn and Andre Fili. However, when he faced off against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar he suffered a brutal one-sided beat down before ultimately being stopped after two rounds.

Magomedosharipov and Rodriguez were supposed to fight two years ago but the latter was forced out of the bout due to injury. Zabit took to social media to seemingly confirm the report of Lazorin and express his excitement about finally getting to do this fight, he wrote.

“It’s time to complete what started 2 years ago. [The date is] August 29.”

The winner of this fight could well be next in line for a featherweight title shot. Alexander Volkanovski will defend his 145lb strap against former champion Max Holloway on July 11 at UFC 251.
