Yoel Romero has revealed there is a “90 percent chance” he will fight Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in his Bellator debut.

Romero was released from the UFC a few weeks ago after losing three straight fights against elite level middleweights. The 44-year-old was originally passed up by Bellator but in a shock move they decided to sign him soon after.

Johnson has also recently joined the Bellator light-heavyweight division after mutually agreeing to part ways with the UFC. ‘Rumble’ is expected to return to fighting in the first quarter of 2021 after several years in retirement. He last fought in April 2017 versus Daniel Cormier in Buffalo at UFC 210.”

In an interview with Ariel Helwani of ESPN, Yoel Romero revealed via a translator that a fight between him and Johnson is highly likely for his Bellator debut.

“To throw a name out there right now is pure speculation…but there’s a huge possibility, 90% chance that [Anthony Johnson] will be the first one to face Yoel Romero.”

Romero last fought in March, when he fell to a decision defeat against UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Prior to that Romero suffered a split decision loss to top contender Paulo Costa and once again fell short in a UFC title bid against Robert Whittaker.

Before retiring in 2017, Johnson was one of the most feared knockout artists in MMA. ‘Rumble’ fell short in his lone UFC title bid against Daniel Cormier but holds several high profile wins over the likes of Alexander Gustafsson, Jimi Manuwa, Glover Teixeira, Phil Davis and Ryan Bader.

First Round Management leader, Malki Kawa, has claimed that polarizing YouTuber, Jake Paul, had rejected the opportunity to clash with recent Bellator MMA signing, Yoel ‘Soldier of God’ Romero, amid the former’s recent callout of former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

43-year-old explosive finisher, Romero recently parted ways with longtime home the UFC, despite retaining a three-fight deal with the North America-based promotion. Scoring a 9-4 record over his almost seven-year stint under the Dana White led banner, Romero was immediately linked to the likes of the PFl, Bellator, as well as David Feldman’s outfit, BKFC — with Bellator snapping up the veteran on a multi-fight deal despite initially refusing the chance to pen him to a contract.

Romero, who is slated to make his promotional bow in 2021 in tandem with a move to the light heavyweight ranks for the first time since September 2011, joins fellow former two-time UFC 205-pound title chaser, Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the Scott Coker led organization — who recently penned a deal also.

Kawa, who along with his brother, Ibrahim represents high-profile features such as former two-time UFC light heavyweight gold holder, Jon Jones, BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal, and flyweight great, Demetrious Johnson to name a few — claimed that 2-0 professional boxer, Paul rejected the opportunity to clash with Romero, before condemning the 23-year-old’s callout of McGregor.

One more @YoelRomeroMMA tidbit… @jakepaul refused to fight him. Opp (opportunity) presented itself, Jake said no… don’t blame him… but this is out of line

Paul, the younger brother of Logan Paul who himself is set to match with undefeated former world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition outing next year, set sights on upcoming UFC 257 headliner, McGregor in the above video, firing barbs at the Dubliner’s fiancee, Dee Devlin — before detailing how his dog had a bigger social media footprint than Dustin Poirier, or as he put it, “Dustin Prober“.

The Cleveland, Ohio native recently made his second professional boxing appearance on the undercard of the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. event — scoring a viral knockout of former NBA player, Nate Robinson, adding to a prior victory over fellow content creator, AnEsonGib.

Well, Bellator MMA continues to strengthen its ranks. Perennial UFC middleweight contender and multiple-time title challenger, Yoel ‘Soldier of God’ Romero is poised to put pen to paper on a multi-fight deal with the organization.

Romero, 43, came to terms with the UFC for his release two weeks ago, despite retaining three-fights on his Octagon deal — snapping a run just shy of seven-years with the organization.

Bellator, who initially passed up on the opportunity to link Romero to a deal according to today’s report from ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani, came to terms with the Cuban late last week, with Romero set to debut in the promotion next year, with a new move to the light heavyweight ranks.

The Pinar del Rio fan-favourite joins the ever-growing list of past UFC talents to link up with the promotion’s light heavyweight division, with perennial contender, Corey Anderson penning a deal earlier this year. Two-time 205-pound title challenger, Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson also mutually agreed to part ways with the UFC last week, before signing a multi-fight deal with the Scott Coker led promotion, with eyes set on an eventual rise to the heavyweight weight-limit.

Last featuring at UFC 248 in March, Romero made his thirteenth walk under the UFC’s banner, dropping a forgettable unanimous decision to incumbent middleweight best, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya.

The defeat came as the American Top Team trainee’s third consecutively, coming after a pair of contentious losses to recent title challenger, Paulo Costa, as well as a championship rematch with former gold holder, Robert Whittaker.

With a 9-4 promotional record, Romero notably dispatched four former world champions; Luke Rockhold, Chris Weidman, Lyoto Machida all via stoppage — in between a close UFC 194 split decision win over grappling maestro, Jacare Souza.

A date or opponent for Romero’s sure to be highly-anticipated debut under the Bellator MMA banner has yet to be determined.

It appears some MMA promotions have taken a u-turn when it comes to Yoel Romero.

There were shockwaves in the world of combat sports when it was recently revealed that Romero had been released by the UFC. What made more headlines was the fact that the likes of Bellator MMA and the Professional Fighters League were seemingly passing up on his services.

However, that may no longer be the case according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

“Things are heating up again in the Yoel Romero sweepstakes, I’m told. Of note, promotions that were initially not interested are now interested and preparing offers or have already made an offer. No final decision at the moment.”

Bellator president Coker previously claimed the promotion were focused on building talent for the moment.

“We got a call from (his) agent, and originally we just passed,” Coker said of Romero. “If you look at our roster and how many fighters we have on this roster and how many fights we’re going to do, there are only so many TV slots. We have kind of gotten away from signing the OGs we used to sign back in the day. That’s because guys like A.J. (McKee) are coming up. Ilima-Lei (Macfarlane) is developing into a main event fighter.

“We’ve basically built from the bottom up. We have a lot of great fighters that are on the roster that we’ve built over the last four to five years. We were kind of headed in a different direction. I was happy with the way the roster is right now not adding anybody.”

However, Coker didn’t rule out signing Romero in the future either. Perhaps he, along with the PFL, have had a quick change of heart.
