Earlier this morning (Wed., March 1, 2017), the mixed martial arts (MMA) universe was shaken to the core when it was officially announced that longtime former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre would finally make his long-awaited return against current middleweight champ Michael Bisping at a yet-to-be-named event in the second half of 2017.

It wasn’t the most jaw-dropping announcement given the 185-pound title fight had been talked about as a clear option for months, with discussion ramping up since St-Pierre made his comeback official 12 days ago on February 17. ‘GSP’ obviously spent several grinding years as a dominant champion, but he also brings what will be nearly a four-year layoff to the octagon against Bisping, and w have to be honest – his last bout versus Johny Hendricks was one of his least dominant performances, and he escaped with a very controversial split decision.

Because of that run at welterweight, St-Pierre wants to return to big-money super fights, and outside of a mega bout versus Conor McGregor – a match UFC President Dana White said wasn’t even close to being signed – this is probably the biggest fight ‘GSP’ can return to. Yes, there were fights like his long-rumored dream match with Anderson Silva and a rematch with Nick Diaz, but those fights can still happen.

And they can happen for much higher stakes if St-Pierre does beat Bisping and join McGregor, Randy Couture, and BJ Penn as one of MMA’s few heralded multi-division champions in the UFC.

Yet there’s the backlash I’ve seen many fans speaking of online, that of the fact clear No. 1 middleweight contender Yoel Romero was denied his title shot at Bisping, something White had seemingly promised ‘Soldier of God’ recently. Those type of promises are shaky at best, we’ve come to realize, and now a middleweight division that was already in a state of disarray after Bisping knocked out Luke Rockhold on short notice last year and his first title defense against No. 13 Dan Henderson last October.

Adam Hunger for USA TODAY Sports

It seems there’s a cloud around St-Pierre’s return, a fog that echoes a sentiment all the best fighters at 185 pounds are getting passed over for a man, who while no doubt being a great, has never fought at middleweight and also has not competed for over three years. Romero will wait, Jacare Souza will just have to keep dominating whoever is next, Luke Rockhold will have to fae one of them in his return eventually, and the Chris Weidman vs. Gegard Mousasi co-main event at next month’s UFC 210, which will feature No. 4 vs. No. 5, will do little to project the winner into a title shot despite it obviously being a huge victory on paper.

So hence the mixed feelings about St-Pierre vs. Bisping. If ‘GSP’ wins as many are expecting him to, then he probably won’t face Romero or Souza in his first title defense. He’d have to face Silva or Diaz because the opportunities would both be too huge to pass up, and they’d certainly be several times bigger than St-Pierre vs. any one of the top middleweights in terms of rankings. The UFC’s new ownership needs attraction-level fights and fast, and these fit that billing like few other bouts could.

I for one think St-Pierre vs. Bisping will be a fun fight with a great backstory. I just can’t help but feel the already messy middleweight division got a whole lot muddier in the process. What are your thoughts on the unexpected title fight?

Michael Bisping Thinks Someone Could Die From PEDs In MMA

Michael Bisping continues to speak out against the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Bisping is expected to make his next UFC middleweight title defense against Yoel Romero, who comes off of a vicious third round knockout over former champ Chris Weidman at UFC 205 via flying knee, but has been held out of the Octagon due to injury as of late. During a recent episode of his Sirius XM radio show The Countdown (quotes via MMA Mania) Bisping and Romero’s manager, Malki Kawa, discussed the Cuban’s recent issues with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA); which really lit a fire under Kawa:

“He’s the number one contender. That fight should have happened January 21st, you went for a knee injury that just popped up… you could have had this thing done in December, you did it now. Man, listen, you played it beautifully… all I’m saying is the following: stop the PED shit and the whole-

Bisping would interrupt, however, and stated that he won’t let up on his rant over Romero’s past issues with PEDs, and went on to state that he believes someone will die from it in MMA one day:

“No. I won’t. I have a very strong stance against it and I will never stop. You take performance enhancing drugs then I have zero respect, and if you defend someone, then Malki, I gotta lean towards zero respect as well, because, you know, it is a black spot on this beautiful sport that we have, and unfortunately, one day, somebody’s gonna die, and then it will be taken a lot more seriously, okay. Until that day- and God forbid that day comes… if you test positive for performance enhancing drugs, you should be banned for life and never given the opportunity to fight again, and that’s how I feel. Call me an idiot, call me whatever you want.”

While Kawa tried to stress the fact that Romero’s name was cleared after it was revealed to be an issue with a tainted substance, Bisping wasn’t hearing any of it:

“There’s no smoke without fire. I’ve been tested one of the most guys in the history of USADA working with the UFC, and I’ve never accidentally failed a test. How does one accidentally fail a test, because I tell you what, I’ve never done it… I’m pretty carefree to be honest, but I just avoid steroids.”

Is Bisping beating a dead horse with bringing up Romero’s past issues with PEDs?

Will Yoel Romero finally get his shot at the UFC 185-pound title?

The Cuban powerhouse’s manager, Malki Kawa, believes the overall consensus within the UFC is that Romero is the rightful No. 1 contender for Michael Bisping’s middleweight title, but the Brit is doing everything in his power to avoid defending his title against ‘The Soldier Of God.’

During a recent interview on The Luke Thomas Show (quotes via MMA Fighting) Kawa stated that Bisping knows his days as champion are numbered with a guy like Yoel Romero waiting in the shadows, and criticized his choosing of Dan Henderson for his first title defense when he was ranked No. 14 at the time:

“The reality of it is that Dana agrees and so does every single person that owns the UFC, has a piece of the UFC,” said Kawa. “From the celebrity owners to Ari Emanuel, Patrick Whitesell, every one of the employees at WME, every single person here at First Round Management, and probably the millions and millions of fans that watch the UFC agree that Yoel Romero deserves the next shot at Michael Bisping. I think the issue here is the following: Michael Bisping understands that his days are numbered when it comes to a guy like Yoel Romero. I think he understands the game very well from every opponent he’s picked.

“Obviously, you’ve seen what he’s done. He fought Dan Henderson. He wanted Dan Henderson in London. It made no sense whatsoever. The UFC didn’t want to do that fight. He kind of forced their hand because obviously he has the belt.”

With former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre signing a multi-fight deal with the UFC to kick-off his return to the Octagon, rumors have begun to circulate that Bisping will be the one to welcome ‘GSP’ back into the cage. If Bisping decides to skip over a title defense against Romero and go right after St-Pierre, Kawa really can’t blame him:

“What I’ve seen from Mike is that he’s gonna call his shots and he’s gonna make smart moves, which I can’t blame him for. If you were managing Michael Bisping or you were Michael Bisping and you had your choice of waiting on a guy who’s been out for two and a half years, which might get you your largest payday, or fighting a guy who’s probably the scariest person in the UFC at this point. You’re talking about 10 fights, nine of them are knockouts? I don’t know that you’d want to fight this guy either.

“So I understand Michael Bisping but I also put this on Georges St-Pierre… Honestly, if he said, ‘I want to fight 170,’ he could easily come down and fight Tyron Woodley. But pick between Tyron Woodley and Michael Bisping. If you’re managing Michael Bisping, who do you choose and if you’re managing Georges St-Pierre, who do you choose? I think at the end of the day you stay clear of Yoel Romero and Tyron Woodley for as much as you can. And that’s the problem that we’re having right now.”

Kawa believes that all of Bisping’s actions indicate that he is ‘absolutely ducking Yoel Romero’ and will make a decision on whether or not to fight the Cuban after his possible match-up with ‘Rush’:

“I don’t care what anybody says, he is absolutely ducking Yoel Romero right now. It’s been confirmed to me by everybody at the UFC. Michael Bisping wants no part of Yoel Romero at this point. None whatsoever.

“I’m not telling you that he’s necessarily ducking him because he doesn’t want to ever fight him, I just think that right now, at this point he’s just trying to sidestep that fight, take this Georges St-Pierre fight, hope he wins, and if he wins, ‘I’ll fight Yoel Romero.’ If he doesn’t win, ‘I got my payday,’ and then Yoel can go and fight Georges.”

Who do you think Bisping will make his next title defense against? Will he welcome St-Pierre back to the Octagon after his long layoff? Or will he finally settle his differences with Romero once and for all?

After defeating Chris Weidman at UFC 205, Yoel Romero sealed his position as the top middleweight contender. Calling out the champion Michael Bisping, ‘Soldier of God’ started a smear campaign of his rival. When simply claiming ‘The Count’ was ducking him didn’t get maximum effect, Romero went that extra mile. The knockout artist from Cuba created a GoFundMe page for Bisping’s ‘retirement and medical expenses.’ Although its only accumulated $200 so far, the rather hilarious point was made.

Shortly after, Romero would phone in to Bisping’s radio show and hurl random insults during an amusing tirade. Without even being booked to fight yet, ‘The Count’ and ‘SoG’ have an already great rivalry. Initially it was thought Bisping vs. Romero would go down in May, but ‘The Count’ confirms he hasn’t been offered the fight yet.

Bisping’s Response

Outside the obligatory steroid accusations and ‘poopy pants’ trolls, Bisping has responded. Speaking to Ariel Helwani during ‘The MMA Hour’ last night, the champ says Romero’s GoFundMe troll was amusing, but also distasteful:

“I’ll give it to him, that was a decent stab. I think there’s 200 dollars in there, make no mistake I’ll use that, the day will come. After I whoop his ass I’ll go get a nice massage with that $200, so thank you Yoel. On a more serious note, GoFundMe pages do fantastic work for those who really need help. I’m currently using it to raise money for a young boy fighting cancer for the fourth time. Thankfully for ‘Leo the lion’ we raised the money. It was poor taste, he’s trying to get people talking. He’s a little fly buzzing around my head, and he will get swatted. He’s explosive, a good wrestler, but Chris Weidman pretty much head butted Romero’s knee. If he didn’t keep doing that, Chris probably would’ve won that fight.”

“Go Roll Me a Cigar, Bitch”

“I don’t spend time sitting around thinking about Romero. He hasn’t got wit, he hasn’t got humor. The guy’s a knucklehead. When he called in, and I tried to have a discussion, and all he could do was scream and shout. Nothing was accomplished. He’s got rocks for brains. People get pissed off about this and that, but I can’t fight everybody on one night. Now I get a little say in the matter, people get all pissed off, I paid my dues in this sport. I’ve fought everybody, I fought guys we all knew were on steroids and went out on my shield. This is the benefit of being world champion, so kiss my ass. That’s why I told Yoel ‘until I decide to fight you, you’re my little bitch, so go roll me a cigar.’”
