UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski believes he’s a bad matchup for Zabit Magomedsharipov.

Volkanovski is set to take on Brian Ortega in the coming months in what will be his first non-Max Holloway fight since May 2019. Should he come out on top as he expects to do so, “The Great” is only looking towards the next contender as he aims to clean out the division.

That would involve a potential meeting with Magomedsharipov who remains undefeated in the UFC. The Dagestan native is known for flashy acrobatics and dazzling kickboxing, but that also leads to him gassing out toward the end of his fights.

That’s something which won’t do him so good when he faces Volkanovski, who is known for the overwhelming pressure he puts on his opponents.

“People are going to say… if it’s a five round fight, he’s got to work on his cardio, and all this stuff. But you’ve got to be realistic with it,” Volkanovski said in a recent interview (via Middle Easy). “He is a very explosive dude, especially for his height. He really takes advantage of whatever opportunity comes in front of him. He’s always going, and he goes hard.

“That’s why it’s exciting as well. He like his flashy stuff and all that type of stuff, his takedowns and all that, but you tend to see him wear out later in the rounds, and you’ve seen that in his last three or four fights. So I would be silly to say that grinding him down wasn’t an option. He is a complete fighter, he is a very well rounded fighter, but at the same time when it comes to gas tanks, he has shown that he tends to fade in fights.

“There’s no better man to break someone than me, I believe. When it comes to pressure and really getting people worried about what I’m doing and breaking them, no one does it better than me. I believe that I’m a terrible matchup for him, but at the same time I respect everyone in my division. He’s a great fighter, but I see my success when it comes down to cardio and endurance and that type of stuff.”

A title fight with Volkanovski would also be the first time Magomedsharipov would be competing in a five-rounder in the UFC.

That’s if he doesn’t fight a main event before getting a potential title shot as UFC president Dana White is targeting for him to make his first appearance since November 2019 in the next three months.

Regardless, do you agree that Volkanovski is a bad matchup for Magomedsharipov?

Featherweight contender Ryan Hall was not impressed with The Korean Zombie’s callout of Zabit Magomedsharipov.

Zombie is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Brian Ortega in October and is now looking to return to the win column as well as title contention.

With Ortega set to challenge current champion Alexander Volkanovski next, Zombie recently called for a fight with Magomedsharipov.

“I want Zabit (Magomedsharipov),” he said. “That’s the fight that’s going to get me closest to a title shot. More than that, I want to once again try to prove myself against one of the hottest fighters in the division and prove that I’m still capable of competing at the highest level. Of course, I would understand if he doesn’t want to fight me.

“… This is a fight that would bring the fans to their feet. (He) and I are both entertainers and extremely competitive, so I think he’d like to step in the octagon with me. A win for both of us would mean a lot for our careers, and it would be an amazing match. The ball is in Zabit’s court; I want this fight to kick off 2021.”

Of course, Hall had recently called for a fight with Zombie as he struggles to find a ranked opponent to face.

And once he learned of Zombie’s callout, he made sure to fire a shot at the former title challenger on Wednesday.

“Anyone know how to say “you lost your last fight” in Korean? @KoreanZombieMMA”

While Hall is right to be frustrated, the reality is he is ranked No. 13 in the featherweight rankings and it makes little sense for Zombie — ranked no. 5 — to face him next.

Hopefully, Hall is able to land a ranked opponent sooner rather than later. The American last competed in July 2019 when he outpointed Darren Elkins.

What do you make of Hall’s response to Zombie?

‘Korean Zombie’ hopes to get back into title contention in 2021 after a dominant loss at the hands of Brian Ortega in October.

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Chan Sung Jung reflected on his defeat to ‘T-City’ which was the toughest of his career.

“It was honestly the most mentally challenging fight of my career,” Jung said via translator. “Physically, it was also very challenging, and my ego was struck down too. Luckily, I didn’t have any injuries. My two-week quarantine once I returned home to Korea made me very focused on the future.”

‘Korean Zombie’ was defeated but is not disheartened. The fan favourite is already eyeing up another big fight with Zabit Magomedsharipov and hopes the pair will square off in the early months of 2021.

“I want Zabit (Magomedsharipov),” Jung said. “That’s the fight that’s going to get me closest to a title shot. More than that, I want to once again try to prove myself against one of the hottest fighters in the division and prove that I’m still capable of competing at the highest level. Of course, I would understand if he doesn’t want to fight me.”

Magomedsharipov hasn’t competed since November 2019. His long talked about fight with Yair Rodriguez seems to be off the table. UFC president Dana White recently hinted that Rodriguez would not be returning to the Octagon for some time. ‘Korean Zombie’ isn’t convinced the Russian will accept a fight with him and tried to talk up the potential match-up as the interview progressed.

“This is a fight that would bring the fans to their feet,” Jung said. “(He) and I are both entertainers and extremely competitive, so I think he’d like to step in the octagon with me. A win for both of us would mean a lot for our careers, and it would be an amazing match. The ball is in Zabit’s court; I want this fight to kick off 2021.”

Do you think Zabit Magomedsharipov will accept a fight with ‘Korean Zombie’?

Zabit Magomedsharipov

Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez have been rebooked to fight at UFC 254. The featherweight contenders were originally set to clash on August 29 but Rodriguez withdrew from the fight due to an ankle injury.

According to Russian MMA reporter Igor Lazorin this eagerly anticipated 145lb match-up is being moved to UFC 254 which will be headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje on October 24. As it is no longer the main event fight Magomedsharipov and Rodriquez will no only go at it for three rounds instead of five.

Magomedsharipov is currently riding an impressive 14-fight win streak which stetches back to 2013. Since joining the UFC, the Russian has gone 6-0 inside the octagon. Last time out he picked up a unanimous decision win over fellow featherweight contender Calvin Kattar. Prior to that he also got another big win over Jeremy Stephens and pulled off the submission of the year against Brandon Davis.

Rodriguez beat Stephens in a rematch last time out at UFC Boston following a no-contest in their first fight due to accidental eye pokes. Before that, the Mexican scored a last-second KO over Korean Zombie in the main event of UFC Denver – it was one of the most dramatic finishes to a fight ever. The win over ‘Korean Zombie’ was his first since being dominated and stopped by former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

The winner of Magomedsharipov-Rodriguez could well be next in line for featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. The Australian defended his 145lb title against Max Holloway at UFC 251, picking up a decision win in controversial circumstances. He has since set his sights on finding a new challenger for his title and whoever wins at UFC 254 will likely be that guy.

Are you happy to hear Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez have been rebooked for UFC 254 on October 24?
