It looks like a pivotal featherweight clash will be taking place on Aug. 29 and it’s between Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez. Magomedsharipov’s manager, Rizvan Magomedov, spoke to Russian outlet TASS. Featherweight contenders Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez will meet at an event on August 29 according to a report from Russian journalist Igor Lazorin who wrote the following on social media.
“Fight: Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Yair Rodriguez should be held on August 29! The winner will become a contender for the UFC champion title! What are your forecasts? Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Yair Rodriguez set to 29 Aug! Winner will fight for UFC title.”
Magomedsharipov is currently 6-0 inside the UFC and his winning streak stretches 14 fights. The 29-year-old Russian captured and defended the ACB title to earn his shot inside the octagon. Once there he has proved to be one of the most exciting prospects in MMA. Magomedsharipov has beaten the likes of Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar to establish himself as a top contender. A win over Rodriguez in this one could well put him next in line for a featherweight title shot.
Rodriguez has been exciting inside the UFC but it hasn’t always gone his way. The Mexican holds several high-profile victories over the likes of Chan Sung Jung, Jeremy Stephens, BJ Penn and Andre Fili. However, when he faced off against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar he suffered a brutal one-sided beat down before ultimately being stopped after two rounds.
Magomedosharipov and Rodriguez were supposed to fight two years ago but the latter was forced out of the bout due to injury. Zabit took to social media to seemingly confirm the report of Lazorin and express his excitement about finally getting to do this fight, he wrote.
“It’s time to complete what started 2 years ago. [The date is] August 29.”
The winner of this fight could well be next in line for a featherweight title shot. Alexander Volkanovski will defend his 145lb strap against former champion Max Holloway on July 11 at UFC 251.

Bantamweight contender Aljamain Sterling has recalled being knocked out by Zabit Magomedsharipov while sparring back in 2017. Sterling is due to face Cory Sandhagen this weekend in a fight that will likely decide the next contender at 135lbs.
Speaking to The Score Sterling revisited a sparring session he had with Magomedsharipov who at the time was an unknown prospect, today he is one of the best fighters in the weight division above Sterling, who said.
“I had one bad knockout in training, that was with Zabit. “That was after I lost to [Raphael] Assuncao, back in February 2017. Dude, I didn’t know who the f*ck he was! I didn’t know how big he was. Mark Henry was telling me how light he was, ‘he’s only about 170.’ Okay, I’m about 162, I can go with him today, I was on the lighter side.”
“I never knew who he was; the guy is a f*cking ninja,” Sterling said. “He comes out throwing all these side kicks, these hook kicks, then the second round he throws a 360 round kick. I closed my eyes and ducked my head, and he kicks me, wraps around the back of my head. I didn’t go out, but I was definitely f*cked up. I didn’t see the kicking coming, and it landed flush on the back of my neck. I’ve got it on video, it’s pretty nasty. Hopefully, Mark Henry leaves that in the archives.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)
Sterling has been on something of a tear lately winning four straight fights. ‘The Funk Master’ beat Pedro Munhoz to establish himself as one of the top contenders last time out but was somehow overlooked for a title shot when the belt became vacant due to Henry Cejudo retiring from the sport.
Magomedsharipov is starting to look like the next featherweight champion. In his past two fights, he’s stepped up his level of competition beating Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar over three rounds. He is yet to fight in 2020 but has been linked to a bout with former title challenger Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega.

Magomedsharipov One Win From Title Shot?
UFC featherweight contender Zabit Magomedsharipov is looking to compete before the end of the summer.
Magomedsharipov hasn’t been in action since November when he outpointed Calvin Kattar in the UFC Moscow headliner. That win put him at 6-0 in the UFC as he called for a title shot soon after.
For now, that doesn’t look like it will be the case as current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is expected to run things back with Max Holloway in a rematch.
That means the Dagestan native will have to fight another contender with Yair Rodriguez likely to be his next opponent. If that is the case, it could happen in August which is when Magomedsharipov expects to be back in action.
“Returning in August, save your strength, I will need your support,” Magomedsharipov wrote in the caption of an Instagram post (translation via RT).
Of course, there is some uncertainty right now given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Although UFC events have resumed and the United States is now granting foreign athletes visas to enter, international travel is still restricted in Russia as things stand.
Hopefully, the situation improves in the next few weeks so that the likes of not only Magomedsharipov, but lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and others are able to compete soon.

Magomedsharipov has taken a leaf out of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s book by looking outside of the human race for good, hard rounds. The lightweight champion is famously known for wrestling with bears during his formative years. Now, the 145lb contender has followed suit by bringing in a goat for sparring. Check out the footage which was posted to Magomedsharipov’s official Instagram account yesterday.
Magomedsharipov fought most recently against fellow contender Calvin Kattar in November 2019. The Russian scored a unanimous decision victory in the fight stretching his winning streak to fourteen in a row, with six of them coming inside the UFC octagon. He’s now on the cusp of a featherweight title shot and has been linked to a fight with former title challenger Brian Ortega.
Despite his world-class ability Magomedsharipov has received constant criticism for his inability to keep pace throughout the three rounds. In a number of his UFC fights the Russian has clearly faded allowing his opponent back into the bout. This is a problem he recognizes and is working to fix but he seemed frustrated about the amount of focus that is put on the issue.
“I wouldn’t say that I’ve got the best endurance,” Magomedsharipov told Russia Today. “I have no problems going five rounds during training. Sometimes my weight cut doesn’t go as planned. I can get sick. I use up a lot of energy, when you kick it takes a lot of you. If it’s just boxing, I can easily go five rounds. When you do the same thing all the time, it doesn’t take much energy.”
“At first it was annoying. Now, I don’t pay attention to it. Every other person I meet wants to talk about endurance. Everything’s okay, but it definitely gets tiring,” he said. “It must be contagious; every other person tells you the same thing. I have trainers, after all, they probably know what I’m missing. I know myself.”
