Demetrious Johnson details how the UFC would pay fighters based on their social media traffic

Demetrious Johnson was one of the UFC’s most dominant athletes when the promotion was still finding its footing in the world of social media.

‘Mighty Mouse’ is considered by many to be one of the P4P greatest fighters in the sport’s history, scoring 11 consecutive title defenses — a UFC record that may very well stand the test of time. But despite all of his accolades, Johnson never brought home the paychecks like that of other champions during his legendary run.

In fact, Johnson’s reign over the flyweight division was so significant that the promotion has even considered shutting it down altogether.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen, but Demetrious Johnson has since found a new home in ONE Championship. There, he reigns as the promotion’s current flyweight MMA titleholder and completed the first trilogy of his career, winning back-to-back bouts against former champion Adriano Moraes.

Looking back on his time with the UFC, Johnson spoke about the promotion’s early days on social media and pushing athletes to expand their individual brands online with a series of incentives.

“When Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook first came out, the UFC would bring us to the ‘Fighter Summit’ and say, ‘You guys need to build your brand. It’s free. It costs you nothing. The more people want to see you fight, the more money you’re going to make because you’re going to make money in pay-per-view points, etc., etc., if you become a champion, if you become a partner,’” Johnson said on his YouTube channel.

“The UFC was very good about doing that. Back then they would send you laptops. Back then they’d give you incentives, I think it was like quarterly. Whoever had the most traffic in their thing. First person would get $25,000. It would go like $12,000 then $5,000, maybe $1,000. They’d give us a lot of incentives to talk about the fights and boast it, and they kept on doing it for I think a year or two. Fast forward to what it is today, I think they’ve seen the payoff of them slowly investing in telling the fighters to do that” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Demetrious Johnson recalls how hard the UFC wanted to push Cain Velasquez

The UFC held Fighter Summits between 2009 and 2011, right around the time that Cain Velasquez rose to prominence and captured the heavyweight title with a stunning first-round knockout of Brock Lesnar at UFC 121.

Cain KO's Lesnar

“I’ll never forget at the UFC Fighter Summit they pulled a picture of Cain Velasquez and were like, ‘You see this man? This man is Mexican-American. We are trying to break into the Mexican market so we want this man to do very, very well. You need to follow this man’s footsteps and try to get your community behind you. That way, it brings more eyeballs to the sport,’” Johnson said.

“I always tell my friends and my wife, any check I can get without getting punched in the face is a good check. It’s a good check because I’m getting paid for not me being in the gym, training hard, and fighting, but by me being a personal persona and going to shake some hands, doing whatever it may be.”

Daniel Cormier roasts Joaquin Buckley following criticism of cringey Conor McGregor callout

Daniel Cormier is going to take any of Joaquin Buckley’s sh*t.

After scoring his fourth-straight win via a unanimous decision over Nursulton Ruziboev at UFC St. Louis, ‘New Mansa’ delivered a cringeworthy callout of Irish megastar Conor McGregor, calling the former two-division champion a “hoe” and dragging his mother and father into the insult.

Offering his thoughts on a recent episode of ESPN’s Good Buy/Bad Guy with co-host Chael Sonnen, Cormier dubbed it the worst callout of all time.

Daniel Cormier

Michael Bisping, who was the one conducting the post-fight interview, also slammed Buckley’s comments in a UFC St. Louis reaction video on YouTube, saying:

“He went too far. He’s trying to be insulting and give McGregor a reason to want to fight him. He was calling his mom and grandma a hoe, basically. I like a bit of a sh*t talk, and then when he went that far, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is bad.’”

Needless to say, Joaquin Buckley didn’t take kindly to the criticism.

Let this be known @dc_mma @bisping @ChaelSonnen Ya mommas raised some hoes!!!!! Yall really trying to twist up my words knowing damn well what I said in that cage but it’s ok we can all have some fun,” Buckley wrote on X.

It didn’t take long for Cormier to snap back with a response unbecoming of the typically mild-mannered Hall of Famer.

“Shut up Pussy! Maybe listen,” Cormier replied. “You had a dumb ass call out. You’re getting talked about by 3 of the biggest voices in the game. Maybe listen. It was the worst call out in history. Don’t let winning at few fights at 170lbs get you too excited bruh. Don’t mention Audrey!”

Joaquin Buckley squanders a golden opportunity

By all accounts, Joaquin Buckley’s callout of Conor McGregor was nothing more than a waste of mic time. After earning a big win in his hometown, ‘New Mansa’ could have used it as a star-making moment. Instead, he went for the biggest fish in the pond which is never a good idea when you’ve barely outgrown being a guppy.

Four days removed from fight night, McGregor himself is yet to respond to Buckley’s callout. That alone should tell you everything you need to know about Buckley’s chances of ever stepping inside the Octagon with ‘Mystic Mac.’

The UFC teams up with McFarlane Toys for new line of ultra-detailed action figures and digital collectibles

McFarlane Toys has signed a new licensing agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Per an official press release, the collectible toy company will “immortalize some of UFC’s most iconic athletes” via a collection of six-inch ultra-detailed and fully posable action figures in addition to a new line of digital collectibles.

“Since UFC burst onto the sports scene, this brand has been growing bigger and bigger every year,” said Todd McFarlane, Founder and CEO McFarlane Toys. “It now stands as one of the premiere brands in sports, as hundreds of millions of fans globally have embraced its thrilling, non-stop action. And now, for us to be able to do some cool things with authentic-looking figures, both physically and digitally, it’s going to be a real treat. I can’t wait!”

UFC MacFarlane Toys

The new UFC action figures are expected to hit shelves and online retailers worldwide this fall. Digital products will be redeemable at mcfarlanetoys.digital, offering fans a way to seamlessly integrate their physical and virtual collections.

“We’re excited to partner with McFarlane Toys, one of the most respected manufacturers of intricate collectible figures in the industry,” said Tracey Bleczinski, Senior Vice President Global Consumer Products at UFC. “UFC fans are among the most passionate in all of sports and we are confident in McFarlane’s ability to deliver authenticity to our fans with a collection of unique, accurately crafted figures, inspired by some of UFC’s most elite athletes.”

Comic Book icon Todd McFarlane brings his stories to life with McFarlane Toys

Before founding McFarlane Toys in 1994, Todd McFarlane was an accomplished comic book artist best known for his work on Amazing Spider-Man and for creating the web-slinger’s fan-favorite villains Venom and Carnage. In 1992, McFarlane broke away from Marvel Comics and established Image Comics alongside six other popular artists, including Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.

MacFarlane

It was there that McFarlane introduced Spawn, a horror-fantasy series he first came up with in high school before giving it a 90s-style update. Spawn was a massive hit right out of the gate with issue #1 selling 1.7 million copies. The comic is still going to this very day, printing its 350th issue in February.

MacFarlane

Two years after the launch of Image, McFarlane teamed up with Mattel to produce action figures based on his comic book characters. After the two couldn’t come to terms on how to make the toys, McFarlane reclaimed the rights and launched his own company, McFarlane Toys.

Over the last 30 years, McFarlane Toys has produced ultra-detailed figures for practically every property under the sun, including everything from comic book characters to film icons, sports figures, and even legendary musicians like KISS and The Beatles.

Will you be picking up McFarlane’s first line of UFC action figures when they hit the market later this year?

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will step inside the boxing ring on Wednesday for the official “Ring of Fire” open workouts, held just a couple of days in front of their heavyweight title unification bout on DAZN pay-per-view (order it here). The action takes place this Sat. night (May 18, 2024), LIVE from Kingdom Hall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The entire “Ring of Fire” card (see it here) will cost $69.99.

As for the open workouts, you can stream those festivities LIVE in the embedded video above beginning TODAY at 2 p.m. ET.

“Oleksandr Usyk is a great fighter,” Fury said during Tuesday’s Grand Arrivals. “Olympic gold medalist, cruiserweight world champion, heavyweight world champion. But unfortunately for him, he has to come against the great Tyson Fury in the era of me. Even if he had 20 million people screaming his name, they cannot fight for him on the night. And when there’s two men in there on the night, it’s going to be very daunting when he has the undertaker in the ring with him.”

Jorge Masvidal reveals reason for Nate Diaz fight date change: 'This guy's such a diva and a coward'

Jorge Masvidal is not thrilled about having to wait another five weeks to get his hands on Nate Diaz.

Originally, ‘Gamebred’ and the ‘Stockton Samurai’ were scheduled to step inside the squared circle on June 1. However, those plans quickly changed when it was revealed that the UFC would hold its next pay-per-view event on that same date.

Now, Masvidal and Diaz’s long-awaited rematch will go down on Saturday, July 6. In addition to the date change, the event will also switch up its location, moving from the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California to the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz

“You don’t want to go up against other dates and other fight events,” Masvidal told ESPN. “Especially, you don’t want to go up against UFC. So, from the beginning, I was trying to switch this date. Nate’s a f*cking idiot. He was adamant about staying on that date because he’s not a UFC employee no more and, ‘I don’t have to do nothing for the UFC,’ and this and that.

“It just doesn’t make sense, especially when I know Nate thinks he’s a boxer now because he boxed the Jake Paul guy, but he’s not a boxer. He doesn’t have a boxing fanbase. The fanbase that he has is from MMA and UFC. So, why go up against our own fanbase? Me as a promoter, I’m thinking I don’t even want to do it. I know a lot of fight fans would buy both or watch both events, but in my opinion, why even do it if there were dates that weren’t conflicting?” (h/t MMA Mania).

Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz set to run back their instant classic at UFC 244

When Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz meet in The Golden State, it will be their second time competing against one another, the first coming at UFC 244 in 2019 for the inaugural BMF title. ‘Gamebred’ won the fight via a doctor’s stoppage following the conclusion of the third round. It was the last fight Masvidal would win inside the Octagon before retiring from MMA in 2023.

Jorge Masvidal

“I don’t like that another month and a week got added to this already long training camp,” Masvidal said. “In hindsight, it doesn’t really matter because I’m making the transition from one sport to another. So the more time I get to practice and perfect my craft, sharpen my tools, it doesn’t hurt me or bother me.

“Now, Nate Diaz’s ass is somebody that does bother me and I want to f*ck him up. We could have had this fight at an earlier date but this guy’s such a f*cking diva and a f*cking coward that he wouldn’t want to fight in Miami, didn’t want to fight in Texas because things didn’t go his way in Texas against Jake Paul. Didn’t want to fight in New York. Didn’t want to fight in California unless it was in his hometown. I’m here pent up, frustrated, training my ass off every day just to get in there with this guy, and f*cking hurt him.”

Nate Diaz walked away from the UFC in 2022 following a fourth-round submission victory over Tony Ferguson. 11 months later, he would make his boxing debut in a 10-round clash with YouTube star Jake Paul. ‘The Problem Child’ won the bout via unanimous decision.
